Chapter 18: The Truth That Could Destroy Everything

The air outside felt frozen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stood there with the confidence of someone holding a secret powerful enough to change everything.

My father looked like he wanted to close the door.

But he didn’t.

Because he knew.

Running from the truth never made it disappear.

“Say what you came to say,” my father said.

Daniel smiled.

“There he is.””

“What does that mean?””

“The man who always thinks he can control the situation.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“You have five minutes.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I’ll tell her.””

My father stepped forward.

“No.””

That single word confirmed everything.

There was something.

Something about my mother.

Something about that night.

Something nobody had told me.

Daniel noticed my reaction.

“See?””

He looked at me.

“Even now, he wants to decide what you know.””

I hated that part of me believed him.

Because it was true.

My father had hidden things.

Important things.

But Daniel was not telling the truth because he cared about me.

He was telling it because he wanted to destroy my father.

“What happened?”” I asked.

My father looked at me.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

Silence.

Daniel smiled.

“That’s the problem.””

My father looked away.

“He can’t.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“Dad.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Your mother was investigating Daniel.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

My father shook his head.

“You know part of it.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Leave.””

Daniel laughed.

“You still don’t get it.””

Then he looked at me.

“Your mother didn’t just discover his financial crimes.””

I waited.

“She discovered that your father knew.””

The words hit like a physical blow.

I turned toward my father.

“What?””

My father immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“He knew Daniel was taking money.””

“That’s a lie.””

My father looked at me.

“It’s not that simple.””

That sentence scared me.

Because people only said things weren’t simple when they were.

“What happened?””

My father took a deep breath.

“Daniel was in trouble.””

Daniel smiled.

“He saved me.””

My father ignored him.

“He owed people money.””

“How much?””

“A lot.””

“And you helped him?””

“Yes.””

I felt betrayed.

“Why?””

“Because he was my brother.””

That answer hurt.

Because it was exactly what my father would do.

He helped people.

Even when they didn’t deserve it.

“But then?””

My father looked down.

“I found out he was lying.””

Daniel’s smile faded.

“You found out too late.””

My father continued.

“I confronted him.””

“And Mom?””

“She found out.””

My voice became quiet.

“What happened after that?””

My father looked at me.

“She wanted to go to the police.””

I froze.

“And you stopped her?””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

“I supported her.””

Daniel laughed.

“Convenient.””

My father looked furious.

“I tried to fix what I could.””

“But Mom died before she could.””

The words felt heavy.

I looked at Daniel.

“You’re saying he caused her death?””

Daniel shrugged.

“I’m saying your father knows more than he admits.””

My father stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

“No.””

I stopped him.

I needed the truth.

All of it.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Tell me.””

His eyes filled.

And then he said the words I never expected.

“I was there.””

My breath stopped.

“You were there?””

“The night your mother died.””

The world became silent.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t want your last memory of your mother to become a tragedy.””

I felt tears forming.

“But you let me believe…”

“I know.””

He looked broken.

“I should have told you.””

Daniel watched.

Enjoying the pain.

That was the worst part.

He wasn’t revealing truth.

He was feeding on suffering.

My father continued.

“Your mother confronted Daniel.””

“And?””

“They argued.””

Daniel looked away.

For the first time, his confidence weakened.

“She fell.””

Nobody spoke.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

My father’s voice shook.

“She fell down the stairs.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And you?””

Daniel said nothing.

That silence was terrifying.

“You were there,” I whispered.

Daniel’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

My father stepped forward.

“You left her.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“She was already hurt.””

My stomach turned.

“You left her?””

He looked angry now.

“She chose your father over me.””

The words were disgusting.

My mother’s death.

His resentment.

His jealousy.

Everything connected.

My father’s voice became cold.

“You knew she was dying.””

Daniel said nothing.

“And you walked away.””

The silence answered.

I felt sick.

All these years.

My father had carried this pain alone.

And Daniel had carried the truth like a weapon.

Waiting.

Planning.

Using it.

Daniel looked at me.

“You see?””

I looked at him.

“You’re not protecting your family.””

He smiled.

“You’re protecting lies.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I wiped my tears.

“You’re not exposing lies.””

Daniel frowned.

“You’re using pain to control people.””

For the first time, he had no answer.

Because it was true.

My father reached for his phone.

Daniel noticed.

“What are you doing?””

“Ending this.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

My father held up the phone.

“The entire conversation was recorded.””

Daniel froze.

The confidence disappeared.

And suddenly, the person who had spent years controlling everyone else realized something.

He had finally been exposed.

But before he left, he said one final thing.

“You think this is over?””

He looked at me.

“You still don’t know the biggest secret.””

Then he walked away.

And I knew.

The battle wasn’t finished.

Because Daniel had one more card left.

May you like

And whatever it was…

It was something even my father was afraid of.
