Chapter 12: The Truth My Father Hid From Me

The drive home was silent.

Too silent.

My father held the folder in his hands the entire time.

But he never opened it again.

That scared me.

Because my father was always someone who faced problems directly.

Except this time.

He was avoiding one.

“Dad.””

No response.

“Dad, please.””

He finally looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

Those words made my heart sink.

“Why are you apologizing?””

He looked back at the road.

“Because there are things you should have known.””

I felt a knot in my stomach.

“What things?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence hurt more than anything.

When we got home, he placed the folder on the table.

Mia and Karen were waiting.

They immediately noticed something was wrong.

“What happened?”” Karen asked.

My father looked at her.

“Did you know?””

Karen frowned.

“Know what?””

He opened the folder.

I watched her face change.

That was all the answer we needed.

“You knew.””

Karen sat down.

“I wanted to tell you.””

My chest tightened.

“Tell us what?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

“Please.””

He took a deep breath.

“The trust your grandfather created…”

“Yes?””

“It wasn’t only for education.””

I waited.

“It also had a condition.””

“What condition?””

My father looked at me.

“That you were legally considered part of the family.””

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

Karen looked away.

My father continued.

“Your grandfather wanted to make sure you were protected.””

Protected?

From what?

Then I saw it.

The pain in my father’s eyes.

“You were not always my only child.””

I froze.

The room became silent.

“What?””

My father looked down.

“Before you were born, there was another child.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“A daughter.””

The words hit me.

“A daughter?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Karen.

Then Mia.

Nobody spoke.

“What happened?””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“She passed away when she was young.””

The room went still.

“I never knew.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to protect you from that pain.””

I shook my head.

“But everyone else knew?””

Karen nodded slightly.

“Mia knew.””

I looked at her.

She looked ashamed.

“How long?””

“Years.””

I felt betrayed.

Not because of the tragedy.

Because everyone had carried this secret around me.

Everyone decided what I could handle.

Everyone decided what I should know.

My father reached for my hand.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That you would feel like you were replacing someone.””

I pulled my hand back.

“I already spent years feeling like I didn’t belong.””

His face fell.

Those words hurt him.

Good.

Because they were true.

Mia looked at me.

“I didn’t know how to handle it.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She cried.

“When I found out about your grandfather’s trust, I thought…”

She stopped.

“Thought what?””

“That you were getting everything again.””

I closed my eyes.

Again.

That word.

Everyone had been fighting ghosts.

Ghosts from the past.

Ghosts that had nothing to do with me.

But somehow, I became the person they blamed.

Then my phone buzzed.

Another unknown message.

I opened it.

This time there was a photo.

A photo of Daniel.

Standing outside our house.

Taken that morning.

Below it was one sentence.

“He isn’t finished.””

I looked at my father.

He saw my face change.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

The color disappeared from his face.

Because Daniel wasn’t just trying to destroy our family.

He was watching us.

And now we knew something even more frightening.

May you like

The person who started everything was still nearby.

And he was waiting for his next move.
