Chapter 20: The Truth About My Own Name

The next morning, my father wanted me to stay home.

“No school.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I don’t know what Daniel will do next.””

I understood his concern.

But I also understood something else.

Hiding was exactly what Daniel wanted.

He wanted us afraid.

He wanted us trapped.

“No.””

My father frowned.

“No?””

“I’m going.””

“This isn’t about being brave.””

“I know.””

I looked at him.

“It’s about not letting him decide my life.””

He didn’t answer.

Because he knew I was right.

For the first time, I wasn’t trying to prove I was strong.

I was simply refusing to disappear.

At school, everything felt different.

People stared.

Whispers followed me.

The rumors from before were still there.

But something had changed.

I had changed.

A few weeks earlier, I would have wondered what everyone thought.

Now?

I knew my truth.

And that mattered more.

During lunch, I received a message.

Not from Daniel.

From the girl who had helped Mia.

She wanted to meet.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me to go.

We met outside the school.

She looked nervous.

“I know you probably hate me.””

I didn’t answer.

Because honestly?

I wasn’t sure.

“I made a mistake.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

She looked down.

“But there’s something I need to tell you.””

I waited.

“Daniel wasn’t the only person who knew about your birth.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?””

She swallowed.

“Your old teacher.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She helped Daniel find information.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“Why?””

“She owed him money.””

Another person.

Another secret.

Another connection.

It felt like Daniel had built a web around everyone.

“How many people?””

She looked ashamed.

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared me.

Because it meant this was bigger than we thought.

When I returned home, I told my father.

He wasn’t surprised.

That bothered me.

“You knew?””

“No.””

“But you suspected.””

He sighed.

“Yes.””

I sat down.

“Why does everyone know pieces of my life except me?””

My father looked at me.

That question hurt him.

But it needed to be asked.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

He continued.

“I spent so much time trying to protect you from pain that I forgot you needed the truth more than protection.””

That was the first time I believed he understood.

Not just apologized.

Understood.

That evening, we decided something.

No more secrets.

Everyone sat together.

Me.

My father.

Karen.

Mia.

For once, nobody was pretending.

My father placed the documents on the table.

“We are going to tell the truth.””

Karen nodded.

“I agree.””

Mia looked nervous.

“Even everything?””

My father nodded.

“Everything.””

The conversation lasted hours.

We learned things about each other we should have known years ago.

Karen admitted she had always felt like she was competing with my mother’s memory.

Mia admitted she had spent years feeling invisible.

My father admitted he had been afraid of losing everyone.

And I admitted something too.

“I was angry because I felt like nobody trusted me.””

Everyone became quiet.

“Because everyone kept deciding what I could handle.””

My father nodded.

“You were right.””

That sentence healed something.

Not everything.

But something.

Then my father placed one final document on the table.

“This is the last thing.””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

“Your birth certificate.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because there’s a correction.””

My heart raced.

I looked at the paper.

My name.

My birth date.

My mother’s name.

Then I saw it.

The father’s name section.

It wasn’t empty.

It wasn’t my father’s name.

It was someone else.

I looked up.

“Who is this?””

Nobody answered.

Then Mia whispered:

“That’s why Daniel wanted this secret.””

I looked back at the name.

And suddenly everything made sense.

Daniel wasn’t trying to destroy me.

Not exactly.

He was trying to claim something.

Something connected to my identity.

Something that could change everything.

My father reached for the paper.

“He has no legal right.””

“But he thinks he does.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at the name again.

The name of the man connected to my birth.

A man I had never heard about.

A man who could explain everything.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice I didn’t recognize spoke.

“I’m your biological father.””

I froze.

The entire room went silent.

May you like

The voice continued.

“And I need to tell you why Daniel is afraid of you.””
