Chapter 7: The Recording That Changed Everything

The memory card was smaller than Daniel expected.

That was the strangest part.

Something capable of changing the entire direction of his life was sitting between his fingers, weightless and almost invisible.

A tiny piece of plastic.

A tiny piece of truth.

And somehow, it felt heavier than anything he had ever held.

Nobody spoke as Daniel carried the card downstairs.

Not Renata.

Not Dolores.

Not even Sofia.

The entire house seemed to follow them.

Every hallway.

Every shadow.

Every old wooden step beneath their feet.

It felt as if the walls Elena loved so much were waiting too.

Waiting to finally reveal what they had kept hidden.

Daniel placed the card on the dining table.

His hands were steady, but his mind was not.

"Do we have a computer?"" Dolores asked quietly.

Daniel nodded.

"Office.""

He looked at Renata.

She hadn't moved since they found the card.

That alone told him something.

A person who was innocent would be desperate to prove it.

They would demand answers.

They would insist on seeing the truth.

Renata was silent.

And silence was becoming her greatest confession.

"You knew," Daniel said.

Her eyes lifted.

"What?""

"You knew Elena left something behind.""

Renata forced a laugh.

"Daniel, you're letting grief make you paranoid.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"For the first time in months, I'm actually paying attention.""

The words struck her.

Because they were true.

He had spent months wanting peace more than truth.

He had wanted his life to become normal again.

And Renata had offered him exactly what he wanted.

A simple explanation.

A person to trust.

A reason not to look deeper.

But Elena had looked deeper.

And it had cost her.

Daniel walked toward the office.

Sofia followed.

"Daddy?""

He stopped.

"Yes?""

"Are you mad at Mommy?""

The question surprised him.

"No.""

"Because of the letter?""

Daniel knelt down.

"Sofia, listen to me.""

She looked at him.

"Your mommy was trying to protect us.""

"But she didn't tell you.""

Daniel looked away for a second.

Because his daughter had said the thing he had been thinking.

"No.""

"Why?""

He took a slow breath.

"Sometimes adults think they are protecting people by carrying everything alone.""

Sofia frowned.

"That doesn't work.""

Daniel almost smiled.

"No.""

He touched her hair gently.

"It doesn't.""

They entered the office.

The computer sat on the desk where Daniel handled business.

Contracts.

Reports.

Important decisions.

For years, this room had represented control.

Now it felt like a place where everything he thought he knew was about to disappear.

He inserted the card.

A single file appeared.

No title.

No date.

Just one word.

*Listen.*

Daniel clicked.

For several seconds, there was nothing.

Then Elena's voice filled the room.

Daniel froze.

He had not heard her voice outside his memories in almost a year.

His chest tightened.

"Daniel...""

A recording.

Her voice.

Real.

Alive.

Sofia immediately covered her mouth.

"Mommy.""

Daniel reached for the chair.

He needed to sit.

Elena continued.

"If you are hearing this, then I was right. Something happened before I had the chance to explain everything.""

A pause.

A shaky breath.

That scared Daniel more than anything.

Elena was not someone who frightened easily.

"I need you to listen carefully.""

The recording continued.

"I found evidence that Renata has been lying about who she is.""

Daniel looked toward the doorway.

Renata stood there.

Her face had lost all color.

"You knew," Daniel whispered.

She didn't respond.

The recording continued.

"I don't know how far this goes. I don't know if she planned everything from the beginning.""

Daniel's heart pounded.

"But I discovered something about my father's old company records.""

He frowned.

His father's company?

Elena continued.

"Years ago, before Daniel took over, there was a financial dispute. A woman named Renata Cross was involved.""

Daniel looked confused.

Renata.

The name.

The one he knew.

But apparently not the whole story.

"I found documents connecting Renata to a family that believed Daniel's father destroyed their lives.""

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at Renata.

"Who are you?""

For the first time, she looked like someone who had been caught.

Not accused.

Caught.

The recording continued.

"I confronted her. She denied everything. But then I found something in her belongings.""

A pause.

"The necklace.""

Daniel looked down.

The necklace.

"The necklace was never stolen randomly. Renata took it because it contained something she believed was evidence.""

Everyone froze.

Daniel slowly looked at the silver chain.

"What evidence?""

Elena's voice became quieter.

"I don't know yet.""

The recording stopped.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then another file appeared.

A second recording.

This one was dated two days before Elena's death.

He clicked.

At first, there was only silence.

Then Renata's voice.

Daniel felt ice move through his veins.

"You're making this harder than it needs to be, Elena.""

Elena answered.

"You came into my home pretending to be my friend.""

"I became your friend.""

"No.""

A pause.

"You became close enough to watch us.""

Daniel stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

"I know why you're here.""

Renata's voice changed.

"You don't know anything.""

"I know enough.""

A chair moved.

A sound of footsteps.

Then Elena spoke.

"If anything happens to me, Daniel will find out.""

Silence.

Then Renata said something that made Sofia grab her father's hand.

"You should have left things alone.""

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because now there was no misunderstanding.

No confusion.

No innocent explanation.

Only one terrifying question remained.

May you like

What happened after that conversation?

And why had Elena never made it home?
