Chapter 12: The Confession Hidden in the Family Name
Daniel didn't remember leaving the office.
He didn't remember walking downstairs.
He didn't remember telling Marcus to stay where he was.
All he remembered was one thought repeating in his mind.
His father knew.
The man he spent his entire life admiring.
The man whose photograph sat on his desk.
The man who taught him about honesty and responsibility.
Knew.
And said nothing.
"You need to calm down.""
Marcus's voice followed him.
Daniel turned.
"Don't tell me what I need.""
His voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
"You knew my wife was killed.""
Marcus looked at him.
"I knew something happened.""
"That's not an answer.""
"It is the truth.""
Renata stepped between them.
"He's lying.""
Marcus looked at her.
"You always did have your mother's stubbornness.""
Renata's face hardened.
"Don't mention my mother.""
Daniel noticed.
The reaction.
The pain.
The history.
There was something deeper.
Something neither of them wanted to say.
"Why did Elena find out?"" Daniel asked.
Marcus looked at him.
"Because she was smarter than everyone expected.""
Daniel said nothing.
"Elena found old records. She discovered your father's company had hidden payments connected to my family.""
Renata interrupted.
"Not just hidden payments.""
Marcus looked at her.
"Careful.""
"No.""
Her voice shook.
"I'm done being afraid.""
She looked at Daniel.
"Your father destroyed my mother's life. But Marcus was the person who helped him do it.""
Daniel looked between them.
"And Elena discovered this?""
Marcus nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why kill her?""
Marcus's face changed.
A small crack.
Regret.
"I didn't plan to.""
Daniel stared.
"Explain.""
Marcus sat down.
For the first time, he looked old.
Tired.
"I followed Elena that night because I wanted the evidence.""
Daniel felt anger rising.
"You followed her.""
"Yes.""
"You caused the crash.""
Marcus looked away.
"I confronted her.""
"Then what?""
"She refused to give me what she found.""
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
"What happened?""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"The road was wet. We argued. She drove away.""
A pause.
"Then I saw the car lose control.""
Daniel stared.
"You sabotaged the brakes.""
Marcus didn't answer.
That was enough.
Renata covered her mouth.
"You killed her.""
"No.""
Marcus looked at her.
"I made a terrible decision.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"A decision that killed my wife.""
Marcus looked at him.
"I tried to save her.""
The sentence made everyone stop.
"What?""
Marcus looked toward the floor.
"After the crash, I called your father.""
Daniel froze.
"You called him?""
"Yes.""
"What did he do?""
Marcus's silence was the answer.
Daniel felt something inside him break.
"He left her.""
Marcus looked away.
"He said it was too late.""
The room became silent.
Daniel thought about Elena.
About the last moments of her life.
About whether she had been alone.
Whether she had been scared.
Whether she had been waiting for someone to help.
And no one came.
Not even his father.
The truth was worse than anything he imagined.
Then Sofia appeared at the doorway.
"Daddy?""
Everyone turned.
She was holding something.
A small envelope.
"I found this in Mommy's room.""
Daniel walked toward her.
"What is it?""
She handed it to him.
His name was written on the front.
Again.
But this time, the handwriting was different.
Not Elena's.
Not his father's.
Renata's.
Daniel looked at her.
Her face changed.
She hadn't known about it.
Inside the envelope was one photograph.
And a message.
May you like
Only one sentence.
*The person who ordered Elena's death is still closer than you think.*
