Chapter 10: The Shadow Moving Through the House

Daniel had spent his entire life believing the house was a place of safety.

It was where he had brought Elena after they got married.

Where Sofia had taken her first steps.

Where they had celebrated birthdays, holidays, and ordinary evenings that had somehow become the memories he treasured most.

But now, standing in the dark hallway with his daughter behind him, the house felt different.

It felt like it was holding its breath.

"Sofia, stay behind me.""

The little girl grabbed the back of his shirt.

"Is it Renata?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Because he didn't know.

And for the first time in his life, not knowing terrified him.

He moved slowly toward the stairs.

Every step made a sound against the wooden floor.

A sound that seemed far too loud.

The downstairs lights were off.

The living room was empty.

The kitchen was empty.

But the back door was slightly open.

Cold air moved through the house.

Daniel's heart tightened.

Someone had been inside.

He reached for his phone.

Then stopped.

Because something on the dining table caught his attention.

A single envelope.

His name was written across the front.

Daniel.

The handwriting wasn't Renata's.

It wasn't Elena's.

It was his father's.

A name he had not expected to see again.

He picked it up carefully.

"Daddy?""

Sofia whispered.

"What is it?""

Daniel looked at the envelope.

"I don't know.""

But he knew one thing.

Someone wanted him to find it.

He opened it.

Inside was one page.

Only a few sentences.

*Daniel,*

*If you have found this, then the past has finally caught up with us.*

His breathing slowed.

*I spent years protecting you from the truth because I believed ignorance would keep you safe. I was wrong.*

Daniel's fingers tightened around the paper.

*Your mother was not the only person who suffered because of my decisions.*

He stopped.

His mother.

A person who had never been mentioned in Elena's investigation.

A person who had nothing to do with Renata.

Or did she?

The next line made him freeze.

*The woman who came into your home was not looking for money. She was looking for answers.*

Daniel looked toward the dark hallway.

Renata.

His father knew.

He knew she would come.

He knew she would enter their lives.

But how?

The letter continued.

*I need you to understand something. Renata's anger is justified. But what she believes happened is not the whole truth.*

A noise came from upstairs.

Daniel immediately folded the letter.

"Sofia.""

The girl looked at him.

"Go to Dolores' room.""

"But—"

"Now.""

Something in his voice made her obey.

She ran quietly down the hall.

Daniel turned toward the stairs.

Someone was upstairs.

He moved carefully.

Not like a businessman.

Not like a father.

Like someone who knew he was walking toward danger.

When he reached the second floor, he saw the door to his father's old office open.

The same office where he had just found the documents.

The same room that had been locked.

A shadow moved inside.

"Who is there?""

Silence.

Then a voice.

"You really are just like him.""

Daniel stopped.

Renata stepped out.

Her face was tired.

Her eyes were filled with anger and something else.

Pain.

"You broke into my house.""

"No.""

She looked around.

"This was never your house.""

The words cut.

Daniel stared at her.

"How did you get here?""

"Does it matter?""

"Yes.""

Renata looked away.

"You found the documents.""

Daniel didn't answer.

That was enough.

Her expression changed.

"You know now.""

"Know what?""

"That your father destroyed my family.""

Daniel held up the letter.

"My father said there was more to the story.""

Renata laughed bitterly.

"Of course he did.""

"You need to explain.""

"No.""

Her voice became sharper.

"I spent years trying to find the truth. Years being told I was crazy. Years watching your family live comfortably while mine was destroyed.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"If you wanted answers, why hurt Sofia?""

The question changed everything.

Renata went quiet.

For a moment, the anger disappeared.

"I never wanted to hurt her.""

"But she was afraid of you.""

Renata looked down.

"I know.""

"Then why?""

Her eyes filled slightly.

"Because Sofia reminded me of Elena.""

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Renata looked at the stairs.

"Elena was the only person who listened to me.""

The statement surprised him.

"Then why did you threaten her?""

"I didn't.""

"The recording.""

Renata closed her eyes.

"I was angry.""

"You said, 'You should have left things alone.''"

"Because I knew she was getting too close.""

"To what?""

Renata looked at him.

"The truth about your father.""

Daniel stared.

"And what is the truth?""

Before she could answer, another sound came from downstairs.

A crash.

Both of them turned.

Renata's face changed instantly.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Someone else is here.""

Daniel looked at her.

"You?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

Then the lights went out.

The entire house disappeared into darkness.

May you like

And somewhere below them...

A door locked.
