Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Behind the Locked Door

The necklace had been missing for ninety-two days.

Daniel remembered the exact number because he had counted every single one.

Not because of its financial value.

The necklace was not expensive.

It was not covered in diamonds or made by some famous designer.

It was valuable because Elena had worn it every day for twelve years.

Because Sofia had touched it when she was a baby.

Because Daniel had given it to his wife on the night they moved into the house.

It was one of the last things he had seen Elena wearing before the accident.

And when it disappeared, Daniel had convinced himself that grief had simply made him careless.

He had searched drawers.

Closets.

Storage boxes.

He had asked the staff.

Everyone denied seeing it.

Everyone except Sofia.

His daughter had asked one question that he had never forgotten.

"Did Renata take Mommy's necklace?""

At the time, Daniel had gently told her no.

He had told her not to accuse people without proof.

He had told her that Renata loved her.

Now, standing in the sitting room, he wondered if he had made the worst mistake of his life.

"That is a serious accusation," Renata said.

Daniel turned toward her.

"Yes.""

"I can't believe you would stand here and listen to this.""

"Neither can I.""

Her expression shifted.

"Excuse me?""

"I can't believe I ignored what was happening right in front of me.""

The words landed harder than shouting would have.

Renata stared at him.

For the first time since she entered their lives, she looked uncertain.

"Daniel, think logically.""

"I am.""

"No, you're reacting emotionally.""

"My daughter is afraid of you.""

"She is confused.""

"My daughter says she saw something.""

"She is six years old.""

Daniel's eyes sharpened.

"Don't use her age to dismiss her.""

Renata opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Because she realized something.

Daniel was no longer defending her.

He was questioning her.

And that changed everything.

"Show me your room," Daniel said.

The color drained slightly from her face.

"What?""

"Your room.""

"Why?""

"Because Sofia said she saw the necklace there.""

Renata laughed again.

This time it sounded forced.

"Daniel, this is absurd.""

"Then you have nothing to worry about.""

Silence.

A long silence.

And Daniel knew.

He knew before she answered.

People who had nothing to hide didn't hesitate.

"Fine," Renata said.

But her voice was colder now.

"Let's prove your daughter wrong.""

Sofia stood beside Dolores, the housemaid who had entered earlier.

Dolores placed a protective hand on the girl's shoulder.

Daniel noticed.

Everyone had protected Sofia today.

Everyone except the person who was supposed to.

They walked upstairs.

Every step felt heavier.

Renata moved ahead of them, unlocking her bedroom door.

The key shook slightly in her hand.

Daniel noticed.

So did Dolores.

Sofia stayed behind.

She didn't want to go inside.

"Sweetheart," Daniel said softly.

The girl looked at him.

"Do I have to?""

The question broke something inside him.

"No.""

He walked back toward her.

"You don't have to do anything you don't want to do.""

Renata watched them.

And Daniel saw something in her face.

Not sadness.

Not guilt.

Anger.

A quiet, dangerous anger.

He filed it away.

Then he entered the room.

At first glance, everything looked normal.

Too normal.

The bed was made perfectly.

The curtains were closed.

The shelves were organized.

A person looking quickly would have found nothing.

But Daniel wasn't looking quickly.

He searched carefully.

The way he searched contracts.

The way he searched financial records.

The way he searched for lies.

Then Sofia spoke from the doorway.

"Behind the painting.""

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at the large painting hanging above the dresser.

"What?""

Sofia swallowed.

"She put something behind it.""

Renata immediately stepped forward.

"Enough.""

Daniel stopped her.

"Stay there.""

Two words.

Two words that changed the entire room.

He walked to the painting.

Removed it carefully.

Behind it was a small crack in the wall.

A hidden space.

His heart started pounding.

Because someone had gone to great lengths to hide something there.

Daniel reached inside.

His fingers touched cold metal.

A chain.

He pulled it out slowly.

And the moment the necklace fell into the light, nobody spoke.

Because there was no explanation.

No misunderstanding.

No confusion.

It was Elena's necklace.

The necklace Sofia had described.

The necklace Renata claimed she knew nothing about.

Daniel looked at the woman standing across the room.

And for the first time, he saw her clearly.

Not as the person who had promised to help his family.

Not as the woman who had comforted him during his grief.

But as someone who had been hiding a secret inside his home.

A secret his daughter had tried to tell him.

A secret he had refused to hear.

Renata's face hardened.

Then she said something that made everyone freeze.

"Daniel...""

Her voice was quiet.

Almost calm.

May you like

"You don't know the truth about Elena.""

And suddenly, the necklace was no longer the biggest secret in the room.
