Calm

Chapter 11: The Enemy Neither of Them Expected

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But those seconds were enough.

Enough for Daniel to realize something important.

Renata was afraid.

Not pretending.

Not performing.

Actually afraid.

The woman who had controlled every conversation.

The woman who had walked through his house like she belonged there.

The woman who had hidden secrets behind calm smiles.

Was now standing completely still.

Listening.

"What happened?"" Daniel whispered.

Renata didn't answer.

She was focused on the hallway.

"Someone followed me.""

Daniel looked at her.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"No.""

Her voice was quiet.

"Because I wouldn't believe me either.""

A strange honesty.

Almost impossible from her.

Then they heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone walking downstairs.

Daniel moved toward the staircase.

Renata grabbed his arm.

"Don't.""

He looked at her hand.

She released him immediately.

"Whoever is down there wants you to go toward them.""

"How do you know?""

"Because that's what they want people to do.""

Daniel studied her face.

"You've seen this before.""

Renata didn't respond.

That was the answer.

They moved quietly back toward the office.

Daniel closed the door.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Renata whispered:

"I need to tell you something.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Now?""

"Yes. Now.""

She took a breath.

"My mother didn't commit fraud.""

Daniel stayed silent.

"Your father blamed her because someone needed to take the fall.""

"Who?""

Renata looked directly at him.

"Your grandfather.""

Daniel felt a wave of disbelief.

"My grandfather was dead before I was old enough to remember him.""

"Exactly.""

The answer chilled him.

"He couldn't defend himself.""

Daniel shook his head.

"This doesn't make sense.""

"I know.""

Renata looked at the floor.

"Because your family spent decades making sure it didn't.""

A noise interrupted them.

Something hit the office door.

Both of them froze.

Someone was outside.

Daniel grabbed the nearest object he could use for protection.

Renata whispered:

"If that door opens, don't trust what you see.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means this person is not here to talk.""

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Daniel held his breath.

Then the door opened.

A man stood there.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

Because he knew him.

Not personally.

But from photographs.

From old company records.

From the stories his father told.

"Uncle Marcus?""

The man smiled.

"Daniel.""

Renata stepped back.

"No.""

Marcus looked at her.

"You were always more trouble than your mother.""

Daniel stared.

"What are you doing here?""

Marcus entered.

Closing the door behind him.

"I came to fix a mistake.""

"What mistake?""

Marcus looked around the room.

"Your father should have told you the truth before he died.""

Daniel felt anger rise.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

"Because everyone knew except you.""

The words hit harder than Daniel expected.

Marcus continued.

"Your wife discovered what your father spent his entire life hiding.""

"What?""

Marcus looked at Renata.

"The truth about the accident.""

Daniel froze.

"You know about Elena's accident?""

Marcus smiled sadly.

"I know it wasn't an accident.""

The room went silent.

Renata stared at him.

"You killed her.""

Marcus didn't deny it.

Not immediately.

That terrified Daniel more than anything.

"I didn't intend for Elena to die.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"What did you do?""

Marcus looked at him.

"I tried to stop her from exposing everything.""

Daniel felt sick.

"How?""

Marcus looked toward the window.

"The brakes.""

The word destroyed the room.

Daniel couldn't breathe.

The accident.

The wet road.

The sharp turn.

All of it.

A lie.

"My wife was murdered.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Yes.""

Renata whispered:

"And you helped cover it.""

Marcus smiled.

"No.""

He looked at Daniel.

"Your father did.""

Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath him.

Because suddenly the truth wasn't about one villain.

It was about a family.

May you like

A family built on secrets.

And he had inherited all of them.
