Chapter 6: The Letter Elena Left Behind

Daniel couldn't move.

The words on the paper blurred for several seconds.

Not because he couldn't read them.

Because his mind refused to accept them.

Elena had known.

She had been afraid.

And he had never seen it.

He had been so focused on surviving his own grief that he never stopped to ask if she had left behind a warning.

"Daddy?""

Sofia's voice pulled him back.

He looked at her.

The little girl who had been trying to tell him the truth for months.

The little girl he had unknowingly taught not to speak.

"I'm okay," he whispered.

But Sofia knew.

Children always knew.

Daniel unfolded the letter.

His wife's handwriting filled the page.

*Daniel,*

*If this letter reaches you, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.*

*First, I need you to understand something. I love you. I love Sofia. Every decision I made was to protect our family.*

Daniel swallowed hard.

Renata stood across the room.

Watching.

Waiting.

*But there is someone close to us who has not been honest.*

Daniel's eyes moved toward Renata.

*I discovered information about Renata that she does not want anyone to know.*

The room felt smaller.

*She came into our lives for a reason. It was not an accident.*

Daniel stopped reading.

His heartbeat grew louder.

Renata shook her head.

"Don't listen to that.""

Daniel continued.

*I tried to confront her. I tried to understand why she was asking questions about my past, my family, and my finances.*

His face changed.

Finances.

"What?""

Renata looked away.

Daniel looked back at the letter.

*At first, I thought she wanted answers. Then I realized she wanted access.*

The words cut deeper.

Because Daniel remembered.

Renata had appeared after Elena's death.

She had been supportive.

Helpful.

She had handled paperwork.

She had offered advice.

At the time, he thought she was saving him from drowning.

Now he wondered if she had been waiting for him to sink.

*Daniel, do not trust anyone who tells you I was going to leave you. That is a lie.*

His hands tightened.

The sentence was directly answering Renata's accusation.

Elena knew.

She knew exactly what Renata would say.

*I never wanted to leave our family. I wanted to protect it.*

Sofia started crying quietly.

Daniel immediately stopped reading.

He moved toward her.

"I'm sorry.""

The words came out broken.

"I'm so sorry.""

Sofia looked up.

"For what?""

Daniel couldn't answer.

Because the truth was too painful.

He had failed her.

Not because he didn't love her.

Because he loved her and still missed the signs.

He hugged her tightly.

For the first time in months, Sofia let herself collapse into him.

She cried.

Not the quiet tears she had hidden.

Real tears.

The kind that came from finally feeling safe.

Across the room, Renata watched.

And something in her expression changed.

Not guilt.

Anger.

"You think you've figured everything out.""

Daniel slowly released Sofia.

"No.""

He looked at Renata.

"I think Elena was trying to warn me.""

Renata laughed.

"You really believe a dead woman's words over mine?""

Daniel stared at her.

"Yes.""

The answer was immediate.

And final.

Renata's face hardened.

"Then you should read the rest.""

Daniel looked down.

There were more pages.

His eyes moved quickly.

*There is one thing I could never prove.*

*But I believe Renata knows what happened the night I died.*

The room stopped.

Daniel looked up.

"What?""

Renata went pale.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel read again.

*If she tells you I was confused, don't believe her. If she tells you I was unstable, don't believe her. She may try to make you question my memory.*

Daniel's breathing became heavier.

Because that was exactly what Renata had done.

*The truth is hidden where Sofia feels safest.*

Daniel looked at his daughter.

"What does that mean?""

Sofia wiped her tears.

"I don't know.""

Then she froze.

Slowly, she turned toward the bookshelf.

"The story.""

Everyone followed her gaze.

The picture book.

The one she had been holding before Renata stopped her.

Daniel walked over and picked it up.

It looked ordinary.

A children's book.

Nothing more.

But Elena had always hidden things in ordinary places.

He opened the cover.

Inside was something taped beneath the paper lining.

A small memory card.

Renata took a step back.

And Daniel saw it.

The fear.

The realization.

She knew what was on it.

"What is that?"" Daniel asked.

No one answered.

Because they already knew.

May you like

Whatever was inside that tiny piece of plastic...

Had the power to destroy everything Renata had built.
