Chapter 13: The Name Written Behind the Final Secret
Daniel stared at the photograph in his hand.
For several seconds, the entire room disappeared.
The voices.
The accusations.
The years of lies.
Everything faded into the background.
Because the person in the photograph was someone he never expected to see.
Someone who should have had nothing to do with any of this.
Someone who had stood beside him through the darkest moments of his life.
The photograph showed Elena.
Alive.
Standing outside a small café.
Talking to someone.
Daniel recognized the place immediately.
It was the café where he and Elena used to go every Sunday morning.
Their place.
But that wasn't what made his hands shake.
It was the person standing across from her.
The person Elena had been meeting in secret.
Daniel looked up slowly.
"No.""
Renata watched his face.
"What?""
He didn't answer.
He couldn't.
Because the photograph had another piece of information.
Written on the back.
A name.
A name that made his entire body go cold.
*Claire Vale.*
His mother.
Daniel's mother.
A woman who had died fifteen years earlier.
A woman everyone believed had no connection to any of this.
"That's impossible," Daniel whispered.
Marcus looked confused.
"What is it?""
Daniel turned the photograph around.
The moment Marcus saw the name, his expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"You knew.""
Marcus didn't answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
"You knew my mother was involved.""
Marcus sighed.
"Daniel...""
"No.""
His voice became sharper.
"I spent my entire life believing my mother died before any of this happened.""
"She did.""
"Then why is Elena meeting her?""
Silence.
The answer was there.
Somewhere.
Hidden between all the lies.
Renata moved closer.
"Who is Claire Vale?""
Daniel looked at her.
"My mother.""
Renata's expression changed.
She looked at Marcus.
"You knew?""
Marcus looked away.
And that was when Daniel understood.
Everyone had been connected.
Everyone except him.
"Tell me.""
Nobody spoke.
Daniel slammed the photograph onto the table.
"Tell me!""
The sound echoed through the room.
Sofia flinched.
Daniel immediately regretted it.
He lowered his voice.
"I'm sorry.""
He looked at his daughter.
Then back at the adults.
"But I need the truth.""
Marcus finally spoke.
"Your mother wasn't just involved.""
Daniel waited.
"She was the one who discovered what your father had done.""
The words hit him.
"My mother knew?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
Marcus looked sad.
"Because she was trying to protect you.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
He looked around the room.
"Everyone was protecting me.""
His voice cracked.
"Everyone except me.""
Renata looked at him.
For the first time, there was no anger between them.
Only understanding.
Because she knew what it felt like to have your entire life built on a lie.
"What did Elena find?"" Daniel asked.
Marcus sat down.
"Your father and I were involved in a financial scheme years ago.""
Daniel looked at him.
"My father?""
"Yes.""
Marcus continued.
"We used a smaller company to hide illegal transfers. Your father's reputation remained clean because someone else took the blame.""
"My mother?""
Marcus nodded.
"Your mother discovered it.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
He remembered his childhood.
His father always working.
His parents arguing behind closed doors.
The night his mother died.
Everyone said it was an accident.
But now...
Nothing was an accident.
"Then Renata's mother...""
"Was the person your father blamed.""
Daniel looked at Renata.
She looked away.
All these years, she had believed his family destroyed hers.
And she had been right.
But not completely.
There had been more.
"There is still one question," Daniel said.
Everyone looked at him.
"Who ordered Elena's death?""
Nobody answered.
Then Sofia spoke.
Quietly.
"Daddy.""
He turned.
She was holding another piece of paper.
"I found this too.""
Daniel took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
And his blood froze.
Because it wasn't a note.
It was a list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
At the bottom was a signature.
Not Marcus.
Not his father.
Not Renata.
Someone else.
Someone who had been in his home.
Someone who had comforted him after Elena died.
Someone who had stood beside him while pretending to help.
Daniel looked up.
And everyone saw the answer on his face.
"Who?"" Renata asked.
Daniel swallowed.
"The person who ordered it...""
May you like
He looked toward the doorway.
"...was someone we trusted.""
