Chapter 4: The Truth Renata Was Waiting to Reveal

"Daniel...""

Renata's voice was different now.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Something else.

Something that almost sounded like pity.

And that frightened Daniel more than her anger had.

Because anger was easy to understand.

Guilt was easy to recognize.

But someone looking at you as if they knew something you didn't?

That was dangerous.

He held Elena's necklace tightly in his hand.

The small silver chain rested against his palm, carrying years of memories he had tried to protect.

"You don't know the truth about Elena.""

The sentence hung in the air.

Even Sofia, standing near Dolores in the doorway, seemed to understand that something had changed.

Daniel stared at Renata.

"What does that mean?""

Renata looked at the necklace.

Then at Sofia.

Then back at him.

"I think you should ask yourself why Elena never wanted you to find out.""

A chill moved through the room.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Be careful.""

"I am being careful.""

"No. You're playing a game.""

Renata shook her head slowly.

"I'm trying to stop you from making a mistake.""

"A mistake?""

Daniel stepped closer.

"My daughter found something you stole from my wife.""

Renata's eyes narrowed.

"I did not steal anything.""

"Then explain why it was hidden behind your painting.""

"I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

For the first time, Renata hesitated.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

Daniel noticed.

He noticed everything now.

"Go ahead.""

Renata folded her arms.

"You really want to hear this?""

"Yes.""

"Even if it changes how you see Elena?""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You don't get to use my dead wife as a weapon.""

The words struck harder than he intended.

For a moment, Renata looked hurt.

But Daniel couldn't tell if it was real.

That was the worst part.

He no longer knew what was real.

"I didn't want to tell you," Renata said quietly.

"Tell me what?""

"The truth about why Elena kept that necklace.""

Daniel looked down at the silver chain.

"What are you talking about?""

Renata walked slowly toward the dresser.

Dolores immediately moved closer to Sofia.

A protective instinct.

A silent warning.

Renata noticed.

And smiled faintly.

"Even now, your staff trusts a child more than me.""

Daniel ignored the comment.

"Continue.""

Renata took a deep breath.

"Before Elena died, she was planning to leave.""

The room went silent.

Daniel felt as though someone had opened a door beneath his feet.

"No.""

"Yes.""

"That's impossible.""

"Is it?""

Daniel laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

"You expect me to believe my wife was going to leave me?""

"I expect you to believe that Elena was not the perfect person you created in your memory.""

Sofia looked confused.

She didn't understand everything.

But she understood one thing.

Someone was talking about her mother.

And the way Renata spoke about her mother felt wrong.

"Stop.""

The tiny voice came from the doorway.

Everyone looked at Sofia.

The little girl stood there trembling.

But she wasn't silent anymore.

"Don't talk about Mommy like that.""

Renata looked at her.

"Sofia.""

"No.""

The girl stepped forward.

Her voice shook.

"But Mommy loved Daddy.""

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Because hearing his daughter defend the memory of her mother almost broke him.

Renata stared at Sofia.

"You don't know everything.""

"Neither do you.""

The room froze.

Even Sofia seemed surprised by her own words.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

Where had that come from?

Renata's expression changed.

A flash of anger.

Gone almost instantly.

"You've been filling her head with stories.""

Daniel turned sharply.

"What?""

"Someone has been telling Sofia things.""

"No one has.""

"Then how does a six-year-old suddenly speak like this?""

Daniel looked at Sofia.

The girl looked afraid again.

But this time, he saw something different.

Determination.

"Who told you?"" he asked gently.

Sofia shook her head.

"No one.""

"Sweetheart.""

She looked at the floor.

"Mommy told me.""

Daniel's heart stopped.

"What?""

"Before she went away.""

The words came out slowly.

"She told me that if something bad happened, I should remember where she put the little blue box.""

Daniel stared at her.

"What blue box?""

Renata went completely still.

And that was the moment Daniel knew.

The necklace wasn't the secret.

The necklace was a clue.

"Renata.""

Her eyes moved toward him.

"What is the blue box?""

She didn't answer.

May you like

And for the first time, Daniel saw fear.

Real fear.
