Chapter 5: The Blue Box Beneath the Floorboards
The search for the blue box began ten minutes later.
Not because Daniel believed every word immediately.
Not because he wanted to believe Renata was guilty.
But because he had learned something important in the last hour.
He had spent months protecting the wrong person.
And he refused to make that mistake again.
"Where did Elena hide it?"" Daniel asked.
Sofia stood in the hallway, hugging herself.
"I don't know.""
"Think carefully.""
"I am.""
Her small face tightened as she tried to remember.
"Mommy said I would know when I needed it.""
Daniel exchanged a glance with Dolores.
That sentence sounded exactly like Elena.
She had always believed Sofia understood more than adults gave her credit for.
"Did she say anything else?""
Sofia nodded slowly.
"She said...""
The girl looked toward the stairs.
"She said the house remembers.""
Daniel felt a strange sadness.
Because that was something Elena would have said.
She loved old houses.
She used to joke that every wall had a story if people were patient enough to listen.
"The house remembers," Daniel repeated.
Renata stood behind them.
Silent.
Watching.
Daniel turned.
"You seem very interested in this.""
"I am interested in stopping you from destroying everything.""
"Meaning?""
"Meaning Elena was not who you think she was.""
Daniel walked toward her.
"Every time you talk about Elena, you avoid answering one simple question.""
Renata said nothing.
"Where is the blue box?""
Silence.
That silence told him enough.
They searched Elena's old bedroom first.
The room had remained almost untouched since her death.
Daniel had not been able to change it.
Not because he wanted to live in the past.
Because changing it felt like admitting she was truly gone.
Sofia entered slowly.
She looked around.
"Mommy used to sit here.""
She touched the edge of the desk.
Daniel watched her.
"You remember?""
She nodded.
"She wrote letters.""
"Letters?""
Sofia pointed toward the desk drawer.
"She said letters were important because people could lie with their mouths, but paper couldn't.""
Daniel opened the drawer.
Inside were old notebooks.
Pens.
Photographs.
Nothing unusual.
Until Sofia pointed again.
"That one.""
Daniel pulled out a small journal.
The cover was worn.
He recognized it immediately.
Elena's handwriting was on the first page.
His fingers trembled.
"What is it?""
Renata asked.
Daniel looked at her.
"Something that belonged to my wife.""
He opened it.
The first pages contained ordinary things.
Shopping lists.
Thoughts.
Memories.
Then he reached the final pages.
And his entire body went still.
Because the last entry was dated three days before Elena's accident.
Daniel read silently.
Then he read it again.
Sofia watched his face change.
"Daddy?""
He didn't answer.
Dolores stepped closer.
"Mr. Vale?""
Daniel slowly closed the journal.
"She knew.""
Everyone looked at him.
"She knew something was wrong.""
Renata's expression changed.
"What?""
Daniel looked at the page.
"She wrote that someone in this house was lying to her.""
The room went quiet.
Renata laughed softly.
"That could mean anyone.""
Daniel looked up.
"No.""
His voice was cold.
"Because she wrote another name.""
A pause.
Then:
"Renata.""
The woman's face went pale.
"You're lying.""
Daniel held up the journal.
"You want to see?""
Renata didn't move.
For the first time, she looked trapped.
"She was suspicious of you.""
"Because Elena was paranoid.""
Daniel flinched.
"Don't.""
"What?""
"Don't rewrite my wife's life because you got caught.""
Renata stepped forward.
"You don't understand.""
"Then make me understand.""
Her eyes filled with frustration.
"Elena knew things about my family.""
"What family?""
Renata looked away.
And Daniel realized something.
There was an entire part of Renata's life he had never known.
A part she had carefully hidden.
Sofia tugged at his sleeve.
"Daddy.""
He looked down.
"Remember what Mommy said.""
"What?""
"The house remembers.""
Daniel looked around the room.
The old walls.
The wooden floors.
The place where Elena had lived.
The place where she had died.
Then he noticed something.
A loose floorboard near the window.
He walked over.
Kneeling down, he pressed against it.
The wood moved.
His heart started racing.
Underneath was a small space.
And inside...
Was a blue box.
No one spoke.
Daniel lifted it out.
Dust covered the top.
But the lock was untouched.
Someone had hidden it.
Someone had protected it.
He opened it carefully.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
And a letter.
The letter had his name written on it.
Daniel.
Not Renata.
Not Sofia.
Him.
His hands shook as he opened it.
May you like
The first line made him forget how to breathe.
*If you are reading this, it means I was right to be afraid.*
