Chapter 6: The Threat at Our Door
After Emily left, nobody spoke for nearly ten minutes.
Not Christopher.
Not me.
Not even the baby monitor sitting quietly on the table.
The house felt different.
It was still our house.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
The same family photos hanging in the hallway.
But somehow, it no longer felt safe.
Because safety depended on believing you knew the truth.
And I no longer knew anything.
Christopher stood by the kitchen window.
His back was toward me.
I watched him.
The man I had loved for almost three decades.
The father of my children.
The person I trusted more than anyone.
And suddenly I wondered:
How much of him had I actually known?
“Say something,” I whispered.
He didn’t move.
“I don’t know what to say.””
“That’s new.””
He turned around.
Pain filled his eyes.
“Rebecca…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to look hurt right now.””
“I am hurt.””
“So am I.””
The words came out louder than I intended.
“I built my entire life with you.””
“I know.””
“I gave you everything.””
“I know.””
“And there was another woman.””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“There was a secret.””
He looked down.
“That’s worse.””
I walked to the counter and held onto it.
“Did your father really do this?””
Christopher didn’t answer.
And that terrified me.
“Christopher.””
“My father was not a good man.””
I looked at him.
“He was controlling.””
“Controlling enough to steal a child?””
His silence was painful.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I never saw proof.””
“But you believe it.””
He looked away.
“I believe my father was capable of many things.””
A baby cried.
Both of us froze.
Daisy.
The sound immediately changed everything.
No matter what secrets surrounded her, she was still just a baby.
I walked to the nursery.
Christopher followed.
I lifted her carefully.
The moment she settled against my shoulder, my anger became harder to hold.
Because she trusted me.
She didn’t know about secrets.
She didn’t know about the past.
She only knew warmth.
A heartbeat.
A safe place.
“I don’t understand,” I whispered.
Christopher stood beside me.
“What?””
“Why would anyone fight so hard to hide a baby?””
He didn’t answer.
Because the answer scared both of us.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
“Hello?””
Then a voice came through.
A man.
Older.
Calm.
“You should have left the past buried.””
My blood turned cold.
“Who is this?””
“Someone giving you a warning.””
I looked at Christopher.
He immediately knew something was wrong.
“What warning?””
The man ignored my question.
“You don’t know what you brought into your home.””
My grip tightened around Daisy.
“What are you talking about?””
A pause.
Then:
“That child belongs to a history you don’t understand.””
My heart pounded.
“Who are you?””
The man lowered his voice.
“Ask your husband what happened the night Lauren disappeared.””
Then the call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Christopher stepped closer.
“Who was it?””
I looked at him.
My hands were shaking.
“He knew about Daisy.””
Christopher’s face changed.
“What did he say?””
I swallowed.
“He told me to ask you what happened the night Lauren disappeared.””
The color drained from his face.
And I knew.
Before he even spoke.
There was another secret.
Another piece of the story.
Something even Emily didn’t know.
“Christopher?””
He sat down slowly.
For the first time since I met him, my husband looked defeated.
“I never told you everything about that night.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course he hadn’t.
Twenty-eight years of marriage.
Three children.
A lifetime together.
And still, there were hidden rooms inside his heart.
“What happened?””
Christopher looked toward the nursery.
Then at me.
“Lauren didn’t just disappear.””
My breath caught.
“What do you mean?””
He whispered:
“The night she vanished…”
A long pause.
“I was there.””
May you like
