Chapter 21: The Last Person Who Knew the Truth
Daniel left before the police arrived.
Not because we allowed him to.
Because he wanted to.
That was the part that frightened me.
He wasn’t running.
He wasn’t hiding.
He was making sure we understood something.
He was always one step ahead.
After he left, Christopher barely spoke.
He sat in the living room, staring at the photograph Daniel had given him.
His uncle.
William.
Richard.
Three men connected by something we still didn’t understand.
I sat beside him.
For the first time in days, I didn’t know what to say.
Not because I had nothing to say.
Because there was too much.
“You okay?”” I asked.
He smiled sadly.
“No.””
At least he was honest now.
That mattered.
“I keep thinking about how much of my life I missed.””
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
“Daisy.””
His voice cracked.
“I missed twenty-two years.””
I reached for his hand.
“You didn’t know.””
“But I should have.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I trusted the wrong people.””
I squeezed his hand.
“So did I.””
The confession surprised him.
“Rebecca.””
“I spent twenty-eight years believing I knew everything about my life.””
I looked toward Daisy’s room.
“I was wrong too.””
Neither of us was innocent.
But neither of us was the monster either.
The next morning, we received a package.
No return address.
No name.
Inside was a small flash drive.
And a note.
FROM SOMEONE WHO WANTS THE TRUTH FOUND.
Christopher looked at me.
“Could be a trap.””
“Yes.””
“Could be Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Could be Richard.””
“Yes.””
He sighed.
“You’re not making this easier.””
“I’m tired of being afraid.””
He looked at me.
And for the first time in days, I saw something change.
Not fear.
Determination.
We plugged in the drive.
One file appeared.
LAST TESTIMONY.
The video opened.
A woman appeared on screen.
An older woman.
Weak.
Sick.
But familiar.
Christopher stopped breathing.
“Mom.””
His mother.
The woman he buried.
The woman everyone said died naturally.
She looked directly into the camera.
“My name is Elizabeth Hayes.””
Her voice shook.
“If you are watching this, William is gone.””
Christopher covered his mouth.
The recording continued.
“I spent years protecting my husband.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“And that was my greatest mistake.””
She looked terrified.
“William did terrible things.””
The room was silent.
“But the worst thing he ever did was not killing someone.””
Christopher leaned forward.
“What?””
Elizabeth continued.
“The worst thing he did was allowing someone else to take the blame.””
I felt cold.
“Someone else?””
She looked directly into the camera.
“Christopher.””
His name from her mouth was heartbreaking.
“You need to know the truth.””
A pause.
“Your father was not the mastermind.””
Christopher froze.
“Richard was.””
The room became silent.
Elizabeth continued.
“Richard manipulated William.””
“Used his fear.””
“Used his desire for control.””
“And when William realized what was happening, it was too late.””
Christopher whispered:
“No.””
Elizabeth’s voice broke.
“The person who caused Lauren’s disappearance…”
She paused.
“The person who changed Daisy’s identity…”
Another pause.
“The person who destroyed our family…”
She looked down.
“It was Richard Cole.””
I felt relief.
Then confusion.
Because we already knew Richard was involved.
But then Elizabeth said the final sentence.
The sentence that changed everything.
“And Christopher…”
The video flickered.
“Richard Cole is not trying to take Daisy.””
The screen froze for a moment.
Then her final words played.
“He is trying to hide what Daisy knows.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
I looked at Christopher.
“What could Daisy possibly know?””
He stared at the blank screen.
Then slowly looked toward the nursery.
And whispered:
“She was there.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
Christopher’s face turned pale.
“Daisy wasn’t just the child they were hiding.””
He swallowed.
“She was a witness.””
