Chapter 11: The Man Behind the Cover-Up
The photograph stayed on the kitchen table for hours.
Nobody touched it.
Almost like touching it would make everything more real.
The man in the background stared at the camera.
A shadow.
A witness.
A person who had been present when everything fell apart.
“My father’s lawyer,” Christopher repeated.
His voice sounded distant.
“What was his name?”” I asked.
Christopher sat down.
“Richard Cole.””
“Do you know where he is?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Christopher looked at me.
“He’s still alive.””
The words made my stomach tighten.
“Then we find him.””
“It’s not that simple.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because Richard wasn’t just my father’s lawyer.””
“What else was he?””
“He was his closest friend.””
Matthew looked confused.
“Dad, are you saying Grandpa trusted this guy?””
Christopher nodded.
“My father trusted him more than anyone.””
“Then he knows what happened.””
“Yes.””
I picked up the photograph.
“Then why has he stayed quiet for twenty-two years?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
People didn’t stay silent for free.
“What do we do?”” Matthew asked.
Christopher looked at him.
“You need to leave.””
Matthew frowned.
“What?””
“You and your brothers.””
“Dad—”
“No.””
Christopher’s voice became firm.
“You need to stay away from this.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it sounded exactly like the kind of thing a father would say.
The same protective instinct that had made him hide the truth was now trying to protect us from it.
But hiding things had created this nightmare.
“No,” I said.
Christopher looked at me.
“No?””
I shook my head.
“We don’t separate.””
“Rebecca.””
“I spent twenty-eight years standing beside you.””
I looked at Matthew.
“And our family is already involved.””
Matthew nodded.
“I’m staying.””
Christopher looked frustrated.
“You don’t understand what these people are capable of.””
Matthew’s expression hardened.
“Neither do you, apparently.””
The words hurt.
But they were true.
Christopher looked away.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daisy started crying.
The sound immediately changed the room.
No matter how complicated everything became, she was still innocent.
I walked upstairs and picked her up.
As I held her, I felt something unexpected.
A strange certainty.
I had spent my whole life wanting a daughter.
And now, in the middle of fear and chaos, she was here.
Mine to protect.
Not because of blood.
Because of love.
When I returned downstairs, Christopher was holding the photograph.
“I need to show you something else.””
My heart sank.
“Another secret?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Of course.””
He reached into the envelope again.
There was another piece of paper.
A document.
I looked at it.
“What is this?””
“A letter from my father.””
“To you?””
“No.””
“To Lauren.””
My fingers tightened.
“What does it say?””
Christopher looked at the page.
“He offered her money.””
“For leaving?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“A quarter of a million dollars.””
Matthew looked shocked.
“Back then?””
Christopher nodded.
“That was a fortune.””
I read the letter.
The words were formal.
Cold.
A business transaction disguised as compassion.
But one sentence made my blood run cold.
You will never see the child again. This is the only way to protect everyone involved.
Everyone involved.
Not just Christopher.
Not just Lauren.
Everyone.
“Protect from what?”” I whispered.
Christopher didn’t answer.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t respond.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A deep male voice spoke.
Even from across the room, I saw Christopher tense.
“Richard.””
My heart stopped.
The lawyer.
The man in the photograph.
Christopher put the call on speaker.
“What do you want?””
Richard’s voice was calm.
Almost polite.
“You have something that doesn’t belong to you.””
Christopher looked toward Daisy.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
“You do.””
The voice became colder.
“The child.””
My entire body went still.
“She is not yours.””
Christopher stepped forward.
“She is not yours either.””
A pause.
Then Richard laughed softly.
“You sound like your father.””
The insult hit harder than expected.
“What happened to Lauren?”” Christopher asked.
Silence.
Then Richard said:
“She made a mistake.””
My hands tightened around Daisy.
“What did you do to her?”” I asked.
The line went quiet.
Then:
“Rebecca Hayes.””
Hearing my name from him made me freeze.
“You should have stayed out of this.””
I felt Christopher move closer.
“Don’t threaten my wife.””
Richard ignored him.
“Mrs. Hayes, you have spent your life believing your husband was the man who saved you.””
A pause.
“He was actually the man who needed saving.””
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Christopher whispered:
“He knows.””
“What?””
May you like
He looked at me.
“He knows where Lauren is.””
