Chapter 19: The Father Who Was Never the Father

The silence after Lauren’s confession felt heavier than anything I had experienced before.

Not even the recording of William Hayes admitting his crimes had prepared me for this.

Not even learning that Christopher’s family had been built on lies.

Because this was different.

This wasn’t just about the past anymore.

This was about Daisy.

About the child sleeping upstairs.

About the question that had been sitting silently between all of us since the beginning.

Who was she really?

Christopher looked like someone had taken the ground beneath his feet.

“Daniel.””

He repeated the name slowly.

Like saying it aloud would make it less impossible.

“Richard Cole’s son.””

Lauren nodded.

“Yes.””

“But you said I was the father.””

“I believed you were.””

“Why?””

Lauren looked down.

“Because that’s what I wanted to believe.””

The answer broke something inside him.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was human.

Twenty-two years ago, two young people had been caught in something much bigger than themselves.

They had made choices with incomplete information.

And now everyone was paying for those choices.

Christopher walked away.

He went to the window and stared outside.

“I spent my whole life believing I had a daughter.””

His voice was quiet.

“I believed someone took my child from me.””

Lauren’s eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.””

He turned around.

“But you knew there was a chance she wasn’t mine.””

Lauren looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“And you still let me believe it?””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She swallowed.

“Of losing the only person who could help her.””

The room went quiet.

I understood what she meant.

Christopher had spent years believing Daisy was his.

That belief had kept him connected.

If he had known the truth, maybe he would have walked away.

Maybe he wouldn’t have fought.

Maybe he wouldn’t have protected her.

But I also understood Christopher’s pain.

A person could forgive many things.

But learning that your entire relationship with a child was built on a lie?

That was something different.

“Tell us about Daniel,” Matthew said.

Everyone looked at him.

Our son had been quiet through most of the conversation.

But now he stepped forward.

“Who was he?””

Lauren looked at him.

“Daniel was William Hayes’s biggest mistake.””

“What does that mean?””

“William believed Richard was loyal.””

“He wasn’t.””

“No.””

Lauren sat down.

“Richard was ambitious. He wanted everything William had.””

Christopher frowned.

“But why would my father care about Daniel?””

“Because Daniel wasn’t just Richard’s son.””

A chill moved through me.

“What?””

Lauren looked at Christopher.

“Daniel was William’s son too.””

The room froze.

“What?””

Christopher stared.

Lauren nodded.

“Richard’s wife had an affair with William years before.””

Nobody spoke.

The secrets just kept getting deeper.

Christopher laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was too much.

“My father had another son.””

“Yes.””

“Who was raised by his enemy.””

“Yes.””

“And nobody told me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Lauren’s voice became softer.

“Because William was afraid of what would happen if you knew.””

“What would happen?””

“He was afraid you would choose Daniel over him.””

I frowned.

“Why would Christopher choose Daniel?””

Lauren looked at me.

“Because Christopher has always been different from his father.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Different.

That was the entire battle.

For twenty-eight years, Christopher had fought against becoming the man who raised him.

But maybe he never realized how much damage his father had already done.

“Where is Daniel now?”” Christopher asked.

Lauren hesitated.

That hesitation told us everything.

“You know.””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

She looked away.

“He’s close.””

A terrible feeling moved through me.

“How close?””

Lauren whispered:

“Closer than you think.””

Before anyone could ask another question, the front door opened.

Everyone froze.

Nobody had knocked.

Nobody had announced themselves.

A man stepped inside.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Older than Christopher.

Younger than Richard.

And immediately, I knew.

I had never seen him before.

But somehow, I knew.

Christopher stared.

The man stared back.

Then he smiled.

“Hello, Christopher.””

May you like

Christopher’s face went pale.

“Daniel.””
