Chapter 26: The Man Who Controlled the Shadows

Everything happened at once.

Christopher moved first.

He grabbed the nearest object from the table.

Matthew stepped beside him.

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

Even Elizabeth looked afraid.

But not surprised.

That scared me most.

“Who is it?”” Christopher whispered.

Elizabeth’s face went pale.

“Richard.””

The name alone changed everything.

A man who had spent decades hiding in the shadows was finally stepping into the light.

Christopher looked at Daniel.

“You brought him here?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

For once, I believed him.

Because the fear on his face was real.

“He followed me.””

The footsteps upstairs stopped.

Then came a slow clap.

Everyone looked toward the staircase.

Richard Cole appeared.

Older than I expected.

Calmer than anyone should be.

He didn’t look like a villain.

That was the terrifying part.

He looked ordinary.

A man who could sit beside you at dinner.

A man who could shake your hand.

A man who could destroy lives without raising his voice.

“Quite the reunion,” Richard said.

Christopher stepped forward.

“You’re done.””

Richard smiled.

“Are you sure?””

“You hurt my family.””

Richard tilted his head.

“Your family?””

He looked around.

“At least now you understand what that word means.””

Christopher’s face hardened.

“Leave.””

Richard ignored him.

His eyes moved toward Daisy.

“There she is.””

I immediately stepped back.

“No.””

Richard looked at me.

“You have no idea what you’re protecting.””

“She’s a child.””

“She’s evidence.””

The same word again.

I hated it.

“She has a name.””

Richard smiled.

“Names are temporary.””

The anger inside me exploded.

“No.””

I held Daisy tighter.

“People are not documents.””

For the first time, Richard looked annoyed.

A small crack in his control.

“You’re exactly why William chose you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Richard smiled.

“He knew you would be difficult to manipulate.””

Christopher stared.

“You knew my father chose Rebecca?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because William believed love was predictable.””

Richard laughed softly.

“He was wrong.””

Elizabeth stepped forward.

“You’re finished, Richard.””

He looked at her.

“Elizabeth.””

The way he said her name was disturbing.

Like they shared history.

Like he knew exactly where to hurt her.

“You should have stayed dead.””

Christopher’s expression changed.

“You tried to kill her.””

Richard smiled.

“I tried to stop a problem.””

“You attacked my mother.””

“No.””

Richard looked at Christopher.

“Your mother made a choice.””

“What choice?””

“She chose you.””

The answer confused everyone.

Richard continued.

“She chose you over the truth.””

Elizabeth looked away.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

Richard smiled.

“You had the evidence.””

A pause.

“You could have exposed William.””

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t.””

Elizabeth’s face tightened.

“Because I was trying to protect my son.””

“And that was your mistake.””

The room went silent.

Richard stepped closer.

“Everyone in this family makes the same mistake.””

“What?””

“They think love makes them stronger.””

He smiled.

“It makes them weak.””

Christopher looked at him with disgust.

“You’re wrong.””

Richard looked amused.

“Are you?””

He pointed toward Daisy.

“You lost twenty-two years because of love.””

He pointed toward Elizabeth.

“She lost everything because of love.””

He looked at Daniel.

“He spent his life angry because of love.””

Then he looked at me.

“And you will lose everything because of it too.””

I felt Christopher move closer.

“You don’t touch her.””

Richard smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“That’s what I was waiting for.””

He reached into his coat.

Everyone froze.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I wanted to see if you were still the same.””

Christopher frowned.

“What?””

Richard tossed the envelope onto the table.

Inside was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Of Daisy.

Sleeping.

In our house.

Taken the night before.

My blood went cold.

“You were watching us.””

Richard nodded.

“For months.””

Christopher’s anger exploded.

“Why?””

“Because I needed to know if Daisy had been given to the right person.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked at me.

“It means William was right about one thing.””

“What?””

“He knew Rebecca Hayes would protect her.””

I felt sick.

“You planned this.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You arranged Daisy’s placement?””

Richard smiled.

“No.””

A pause.

“Someone else did.””

Everyone looked at Elizabeth.

She whispered:

“Anna.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

Christopher looked confused.

“Anna worked for you?””

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“She worked for your mother.””

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

“And she was the last person who knew where the original recording was hidden.””

A sudden realization hit me.

The bracelet.

The memory card.

The evidence.

But Richard was still here.

Which meant…

“You already know where it is.””

Richard looked at me.

“Yes.””

My heart dropped.

“Then why haven’t you taken it?””

His smile disappeared.

“Because I don’t know where the second copy is.””

Silence.

“Second copy?””

Richard looked around.

“Your family never learns.””

He laughed softly.

“Everyone keeps secrets.””

Then he looked directly at Christopher.

“Even you.””

Christopher froze.

“What?””

May you like

Richard smiled.

“You still haven’t told Rebecca what happened the night Lauren disappeared.””
