Chapter 27: The Truth Christopher Buried

The room changed.

Again.

Every time I thought there were no more secrets left, another one appeared.

I looked at Christopher.

He didn’t look surprised.

That was the worst part.

He looked guilty.

“Christopher?””

He didn’t answer.

Richard smiled.

“There it is.””

“Stop.””

Christopher’s voice was low.

“You don’t get to do this.””

Richard ignored him.

“Tell her.””

Christopher looked away.

“Tell her what?””

“That Lauren didn’t disappear because of William.””

My heart sank.

“Then why?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because of your husband.””

The words felt impossible.

“No.””

Christopher closed his eyes.

“Rebecca…”

I stepped back.

“What is he talking about?””

Richard smiled.

“Ask him.””

I looked at Christopher.

“Tell me.””

He stayed silent.

And that silence broke me more than any confession.

“Tell me.””

Finally, he spoke.

“That night…”

His voice shook.

“I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

He swallowed.

“I helped Lauren disappear.””

The room went silent.

My heart shattered.

“You?””

Christopher looked at me.

“I thought I was saving her.””

“From who?””

“From my father.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because I didn’t know if I succeeded.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Christopher took a breath.

“Lauren wasn’t supposed to vanish.””

“Then what happened?””

“She was supposed to leave the country.””

My hands trembled.

“Why?””

“Because William threatened her.””

“And you helped.””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me.””

“Yes.””

The pain in his eyes was real.

But it didn’t erase mine.

“You let me believe she was dead.””

“I thought she was.””

Richard laughed.

“Exactly.””

Everyone looked at him.

“That was the problem.””

Richard stepped closer.

“Christopher was never supposed to be involved.””

“What?””

“William wanted Lauren gone.””

Richard smiled.

“But Christopher ruined the plan.””

Christopher stared.

“What?””

“You helped her escape.””

Richard’s expression turned cold.

“And that is why William lost control.””

I looked at Christopher.

“You saved her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you ashamed?””

“Because Lauren disappeared afterward.””

A pause.

“And I never knew what happened.””

Richard smiled.

“Until now.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Lauren stepped forward.

“I need to tell the rest.””

Everyone looked at her.

She took a deep breath.

“Christopher didn’t know everything.””

“What do you mean?””

“That night, after Christopher left, Richard found me.””

Christopher went pale.

“No.””

Lauren nodded.

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“He tried to kill me.””

The room went silent.

“He thought I had the recording.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Then how did you survive?””

Lauren looked at Elizabeth.

“Because she came back.””

Elizabeth nodded.

“I followed him.””

Christopher stared at his mother.

“You saved her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone think she died?””

Elizabeth looked down.

“Because Richard made sure everyone believed I was gone.””

The pieces finally connected.

Richard had controlled the story.

The deaths.

The disappearances.

The lies.

All of it.

But then Richard spoke.

“You still don’t understand.””

Everyone turned.

His expression had changed.

No more calm.

No more pretending.

“You think the story ends with me?””

Christopher stared.

“What are you saying?””

Richard smiled.

“There is someone above me.””

The room froze.

“Who?””

Richard looked at Daisy.

“The person who funded everything.””

My blood went cold.

“Who?””

Richard looked at Christopher.

“The person your father feared.””

A pause.

“The person who wanted Daisy hidden more than anyone.””

Christopher whispered:

“Who?””

Richard smiled.

“Your grandfather.””

Nobody spoke.

“Your grandfather died thirty years ago,” Christopher said.

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Richard reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a phone.

Pressed a button.

A voice came through the speaker.

An old voice.

A voice none of us expected to hear.

A voice that should have been impossible.

“Hello, Christopher.””

Christopher stopped breathing.

Because he recognized it.

I saw the color leave his face.

“Grandfather?””

The voice laughed softly.

May you like

“I think it’s time my family learned the truth.””

And then the call ended.
