Chapter 13: The Crime Hidden Beneath Our Family Name
The darkness came instantly.
One second, we were standing inside Lauren’s small house, staring at evidence that could destroy a powerful family.
The next second, everything disappeared.
No lights.
No sound.
Only silence.
Then came the noise.
A crash outside.
Someone running.
Christopher immediately moved toward me.
“Stay back.””
The words were automatic.
Protective.
But this time, I wasn’t the same woman who had walked into the hospital that morning.
I had spent hours learning that my entire marriage had been built beside secrets.
I had discovered a daughter I never expected.
A woman who was supposed to be dead.
A crime that had been buried for decades.
And now someone was trying to scare us.
I refused to stand frozen.
“Where is Daisy?””
Lauren answered immediately.
“She’s with me.””
I could barely see her shape in the darkness.
“Get her away from the windows.””
Christopher moved toward the front of the house.
“Everyone stay quiet.””
Matthew whispered:
“Dad, what are you doing?””
“Checking outside.””
“No.””
Christopher turned.
Our son’s voice was firm.
“You’re not going alone.””
For a moment, I saw the little boy Christopher used to carry on his shoulders.
But that little boy was now a grown man.
And he wasn’t afraid anymore.
“Fine,” Christopher said.
They moved together.
Father and son.
Two people I loved.
Two people connected by a history neither of them fully understood.
Lauren came closer to me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For bringing this into your life.””
I looked down at Daisy.
The baby was sleeping in my arms.
“You didn’t bring her into my life.””
Lauren’s eyes filled.
“She was supposed to be with me.””
The pain in her voice broke something inside me.
For the first time, I wasn’t seeing Lauren as the woman from Christopher’s past.
I was seeing her as a mother.
A mother who had lost twenty-two years.
“I don’t understand,” I whispered.
“What?””
“If you loved her so much, how did you survive leaving?””
Lauren looked away.
“I didn’t.””
The answer was so quiet I almost missed it.
“I survived because I had to.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
Then returned.
Everyone froze.
Christopher and Matthew came back from the hallway.
“Nothing,” Christopher said.
“Nothing?”” I repeated.
He looked frustrated.
“No one is outside.””
Lauren shook her head.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because they wanted us to know they were here.””
A chill ran through me.
“What do you mean?””
Lauren walked to the window.
She looked outside.
Then gasped.
“What?””
She pointed.
On the front lawn was a symbol drawn into the dirt.
A circle.
With a line through it.
Christopher went pale.
“Where did you see that?””
Lauren looked at him.
“You know it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Christopher.””
He swallowed.
“My father used it.””
My stomach tightened.
“For what?””
He stared at the symbol.
“To mark things he owned.””
The words felt horrifying.
“Things?””
Christopher nodded.
“People.””
Nobody spoke.
The notebook sat on the table.
The evidence.
The secret.
The reason someone was willing to destroy lives.
Matthew picked it up.
“Dad.””
Christopher looked.
“There’s something else.””
He turned the pages.
Near the back was a name.
A name none of us expected.
Matthew Hayes.
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Matthew stared.
“Why is my name here?””
Christopher grabbed the notebook.
His hands shook.
“No.””
“What does it mean?”” Matthew asked.
“I don’t know.””
“You said this was about Daisy.””
“It is.””
“Then why is my name written here?””
Christopher had no answer.
I looked at him.
And I realized something terrifying.
May you like
Maybe Daisy wasn’t the only child connected to this secret.
Maybe our entire family was.
