Chapter 22: The Memory Hidden Inside a Child

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The sentence remained in the room like smoke.

“She was a witness.””

Christopher had said it quietly.

Almost like he was afraid the words would become more real if he spoke them louder.

I looked toward the nursery.

Daisy was asleep.

Peaceful.

Unaware.

She had no idea that everyone around her was fighting over a past she never asked to inherit.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Christopher didn’t answer.

“Christopher.””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared me.

Because for the first time, I realized something.

Christopher wasn’t just hiding information.

He was discovering it with us.

His entire life was being rewritten too.

Matthew stood near the television, staring at the frozen screen.

“Dad.””

Christopher looked at him.

“If Daisy was a witness…”

He stopped.

“Witness to what?””

Nobody answered.

Because the question was too big.

Then Lauren spoke.

“I know.””

Everyone turned toward her.

“You know?””

She nodded slowly.

“I always wondered why they wanted her.””

Christopher looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because I didn’t know the full truth.””

“But you knew something.””

Lauren looked down.

“When Daisy was born, something happened.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“The night she was born?””

“Yes.””

“Tell us.””

Lauren closed her eyes.

“I was in the hospital.””

The room became quiet.

“Christopher was there.””

He looked surprised.

“You never told me this part.””

“I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because after that night, everything changed.””

Lauren took a shaky breath.

“I remember holding Emma.””

She smiled sadly.

“My little girl.””

The pain in her voice was impossible to ignore.

“She was healthy.””

“Beautiful.””

“She had your eyes.””

Christopher looked away.

“Then what happened?””

Lauren continued.

“Your father arrived.””

Christopher froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“He wanted to see the baby.””

“Why would he?””

“Because he already knew.””

“About the pregnancy?””

“No.””

Lauren looked at Daisy’s room.

“About the recording.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What recording?””

“The one your mother made.””

Christopher’s expression changed.

“The testimony.””

Lauren nodded.

“Your mother recorded William and Richard arguing.””

“About what?””

“About everything.””

She looked at Christopher.

“She knew they were planning something.””

“What?””

“To make Lauren disappear.””

“To erase Emma’s existence.””

“To remove anyone who could expose them.””

I felt sick.

“But Daisy was only a baby.””

“Yes.””

“Why was she dangerous?””

Lauren looked at me.

“Because babies remember things.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Not like adults.””

She shook her head.

“But there was something in that hospital room.””

“What?””

“A witness.””

The room went silent.

Lauren looked at Christopher.

“Your mother.””

I held my breath.

“What about her?””

“She saw Richard do something.””

Christopher stepped closer.

“What?””

Lauren whispered:

“She saw Richard change the hospital records.””

My heart raced.

“Why?””

“Because he needed Daisy to disappear legally.””

Christopher shook his head.

“That doesn’t explain why Daisy is a witness.””

Lauren looked at him.

“It does.””

A pause.

“Because your mother was not the only one who saw.””

Everyone went still.

“Who else?””

Lauren looked toward the nursery.

“Emma.””

I felt a chill.

“That’s impossible.””

“She was a newborn.””

“Yes.””

Lauren nodded.

“But she was there.””

I didn’t understand.

“She was a baby.””

“She was in the room.””

“During what?””

May you like

Lauren’s eyes filled with fear.

“The night Richard tried to kill your mother.””
