Chapter 29: The Last Secret Of The Hayes Family
Henry Hayes did not look like the man I imagined.
That bothered me.
I expected someone terrifying.
Someone obviously cruel.
Someone who looked like a villain.
Instead, he looked like an elderly man.
A man who could have been anyone’s grandfather.
That was the most frightening thing.
Evil rarely announced itself.
Sometimes it smiled.
Sometimes it shook your hand.
Sometimes it told you it was protecting the family.
“What do you want?”” Christopher asked.
Henry looked at him.
“You sound like your father.””
Christopher’s expression hardened.
“I’m nothing like him.””
Henry smiled.
“That’s what he always said.””
The words hit him.
Because they were designed to.
Henry knew exactly where to aim.
But Christopher didn’t move.
“I’m done being controlled.””
Henry looked impressed.
“Finally.””
“Finally?””
“Yes.””
He looked around.
“Your father spent his entire life trying to earn my approval.””
A pause.
“And you spent yours trying to escape it.””
Christopher said nothing.
“Both of you failed.””
I stepped forward.
“You destroyed people because you wanted control.””
Henry looked at me.
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I destroyed people because they threatened stability.””
I felt disgusted.
“That’s what you call it?””
“Yes.””
He looked at Daisy.
“Every family has sacrifices.””
“No.””
I held her closer.
“Every family has choices.””
For the first time, Henry looked irritated.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You think love makes you righteous.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I think people are responsible for what they do.””
A silence followed.
Then Daniel spoke.
“What about me?””
Everyone turned.
Henry looked at him.
“You.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You used me.””
Henry tilted his head.
“I gave you purpose.””
“You gave me anger.””
“You needed motivation.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“I spent my whole life trying to prove I deserved a place in this family.””
Henry looked at him.
“And now?””
Daniel stared.
“Now I realize I never wanted your place.””
That seemed to surprise Henry.
“I wanted to know why I wasn’t enough.””
The room went quiet.
Even Henry had no answer.
Because that was the one thing people like him never understood.
They thought power replaced love.
It never did.
Henry looked away.
“Sentiment.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Christopher.
“It’s what you never understood.””
Henry frowned.
“What?””
“Family isn’t something you own.””
A long silence.
Then Henry laughed.
“You sound just like him.””
“Like who?””
“William.””
Nobody expected that.
Christopher looked confused.
Henry continued.
“He was weak.””
A pause.
“But near the end…”
He looked at Christopher.
“He finally understood.””
“Understood what?””
“That he had created something better than himself.””
Christopher froze.
Henry continued.
“Your father hid Daisy because he was afraid.””
“Afraid of you?””
“Yes.””
“But he also protected her.””
Silence.
“He knew Henry would destroy her.””
Everyone looked at Henry.
“You were going to kill a baby.””
Henry’s expression didn’t change.
“I was going to remove a threat.””
I felt sick.
“She is a person.””
“She is evidence.””
The same word.
The same cruelty.
I looked at Christopher.
Then at Matthew.
Then Daniel.
And I realized something.
This was why Daisy had been brought to us.
Not because we were perfect.
Because we were a family that could fight for her.
Henry turned toward me.
“You still don’t understand why William chose you.””
“Tell me.””
“He knew blood was not enough.””
The answer surprised me.
“He knew his own blood had failed him.””
Henry looked at Christopher.
“Your family was full of people protecting themselves.””
Then he looked at me.
“You were protecting a child you had no obligation to protect.””
A pause.
“That was the one thing he couldn’t understand.””
For the first time, Henry looked almost defeated.
Almost.
Then he reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he removed a small envelope.
“This belongs to Daisy.””
Christopher stepped forward.
“What is it?””
“The original birth record.””
My heart stopped.
The truth.
The final piece.
Henry handed it to me.
I didn’t move.
“Why?””
“Because I’m tired.””
The answer shocked everyone.
“Tired of what?””
Henry looked around the room.
“Tired of carrying a legacy built by dead men.””
Nobody spoke.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a document.
One name stood out.
Father:
Daniel Cole.
Mother:
Lauren Bennett.
But underneath was another note.
Added years later.
The handwriting was William’s.
A message.
She is not a mistake.
She is a second chance.
Tears filled my eyes.
Christopher saw it.
He closed his eyes.
For twenty-two years, everyone had treated Daisy like a problem.
But William, at the end, had finally understood.
She was never the problem.
She was the chance to fix everything.
Then the sound of sirens filled the distance.
Richard looked toward the window.
“What did you do?””
Christopher looked at him.
“What?””
“You called them.””
Christopher nodded.
“Yes.””
Henry smiled faintly.
“Good.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Why?””
May you like
Henry sat down slowly.
“Because someone should finally answer for what happened.””
