Chapter 25: The Mother Who Returned From the Dead

Nobody moved.

Nobody even seemed to breathe.

The woman standing in my living room was impossible.

She was a memory.

A photograph.

A voice on a recording.

She was supposed to be gone.

Yet she was standing in front of us.

Alive.

Christopher looked like he couldn’t decide whether to run toward her or away from her.

“Mom?””

The word came out broken.

Elizabeth Hayes looked older than the woman in the photographs.

Of course she did.

Twenty-two years had passed.

Twenty-two years of hiding.

Twenty-two years of carrying a truth she was never allowed to share.

But her eyes were the same.

And Christopher recognized them.

“You’re alive.””

Elizabeth nodded.

“Yes.””

A thousand emotions crossed Christopher’s face.

Anger.

Relief.

Confusion.

Pain.

“You let me bury you.””

The accusation was quiet.

But it hurt more than yelling.

Elizabeth looked down.

“I know.””

“You let me believe I lost you.””

“I know.””

“Do you know what that did to me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“No.””

Christopher shook his head.

“You don’t.””

Elizabeth stepped closer.

“I watched from a distance.””

That sentence made everyone freeze.

“You watched?””

She nodded.

“I watched you get married.””

Christopher stared.

“I watched you hold Matthew for the first time.””

His expression changed.

“I watched Daniel and Jacob grow up.””

Tears formed in my eyes.

She had missed everything.

Every birthday.

Every holiday.

Every moment.

“Why?”” Christopher whispered.

“Because if I came back, Richard would find me.””

“And you thought losing my mother was better?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought keeping my son alive was more important.””

The room went silent.

Because that was the hardest part.

Everyone had made terrible choices.

But every person believed they were protecting someone.

Elizabeth looked toward Daisy.

The moment she saw her, her face changed.

“Oh.””

A small sound.

A broken sound.

“She’s beautiful.””

I held Daisy closer.

Elizabeth noticed.

And something about that hurt me.

Because I realized this woman had spent twenty-two years wanting to hold a child she never got to know.

“Tell us everything,” Christopher said.

Elizabeth nodded.

“I owe you that.””

Daniel stood near the door.

Watching.

Waiting.

Like he already knew the story.

Like he had heard it before.

Elizabeth noticed him.

“You brought him.””

Christopher looked at Daniel.

“You know him?””

“Yes.””

The answer shocked us.

“How?””

Elizabeth looked at Daniel.

“Because I saved him too.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

“What?””

Elizabeth took a breath.

“Richard was never supposed to raise you.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t pretend you care.””

“I do.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“You cared about Christopher.””

Elizabeth looked hurt.

“I cared about both of you.””

“Then why did he get everything?””

She looked at him.

“Because I didn’t know.””

That stopped him.

“What?””

“I didn’t know you existed until years later.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.””

“No.””

Elizabeth shook her head.

“William hid you from me too.””

The room went quiet.

“He hid everyone.””

She looked at Christopher.

“Your father was terrified of losing control.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Then why did you protect him?””

“I didn’t.””

“You stayed.””

“I stayed because I was trying to stop him.””

Daniel looked away.

Elizabeth continued.

“Richard was the real danger.””

Christopher stepped forward.

“Then why did Richard want Daisy?””

Elizabeth looked at Daisy.

“Because Daisy knows something.””

Again.

That phrase.

The same mystery.

The same impossible idea.

“What could a baby possibly know?”” I asked.

Elizabeth looked at me.

“Not what she knows.””

She paused.

“What she has.””

My heart raced.

“The memory card.””

Elizabeth nodded.

“When Lauren escaped, she gave Daisy the only thing that could destroy Richard.””

“But how?””

Elizabeth looked at me.

“Lauren hid it in the one place nobody would search.””

I frowned.

“Where?””

Elizabeth looked at Daisy.

“Inside her hospital bracelet.””

My breath stopped.

The bracelet.

The one left at our house.

The one with Emma’s name.

I remembered.

It was old.

Small.

But I never checked inside.

Christopher immediately understood.

“Richard knew.””

“Yes.””

“That’s why he wanted it.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“And now you know why I needed Daisy.””

Everyone looked at him.

His expression was darker.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt her.””

Christopher’s voice was cold.

“You kidnapped information from a child.””

“I was trying to recover what belonged to me.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Christopher stepped closer.

“You spent your entire life blaming me for something my father did.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Because you had everything.””

“And you think taking Daisy fixes that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Then the sound of breaking glass came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Christopher looked toward the stairs.

“Rebecca.””

May you like

I tightened my grip on Daisy.

“Someone is in the house.””
