Chapter 10: The Mother I Buried Was The Woman Behind The Lie
For years, I believed my mother was gone.
Not missing.
Not hiding.
Gone.
That was the word everyone used.
The word my father used.
The word the lawyers used.
The word that appeared on every official document connected to my childhood.
My mother had died in a car accident when I was fourteen.
At least, that was what I had been told.
I remembered the funeral.
The black clothes.
The flowers.
The endless people telling me how strong I was.
I remembered my father holding my hand so tightly that day.
I remembered him whispering:
“Your mother loved you more than anything.””
For years, those words were the only thing I had left.
And now Julian was standing in my apartment telling me the impossible.
My mother was alive.
“No.””
The word left my mouth before I could stop it.
Julian looked at me.
“Clara…”
“No.””
I grabbed the phone from his hand.
I stared at the picture again.
The woman standing behind Ethan was older.
Different.
But there was no mistaking those eyes.
Those eyes belonged to the woman who used to sing to me when I couldn’t sleep.
The woman who braided my hair before school.
The woman whose perfume I remembered even after years.
My mother.
“Where was this taken?””
Julian hesitated.
“Ethan sent it.””
“Why?””
“He wanted me to know he found someone.””
“Someone?””
Julian looked away.
“Your mother.””
I stepped back.
My entire world felt unstable.
Every memory.
Every belief.
Everything I thought I knew.
“What else do you know?””
Julian didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
“You know more.””
“Clara…”
“You know more.””
His shoulders dropped.
“Yes.””
The anger came before the sadness.
Not because he knew.
Because everyone always knew something.
Everyone except me.
“My whole life people have been deciding what I can handle.””
My voice shook.
“My father hid things. Richard hid things. You hid things.””
I looked at him.
“And now you’re going to tell me you were protecting me?””
He didn’t defend himself.
Because he knew better.
“I found out six months after we got married.””
I froze.
“Six months?””
Julian nodded.
“My father had old records. Documents about your family.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was afraid.””
There it was again.
Fear.
The excuse everyone used.
“Afraid of what?””
“That if I told you, I would lose everything.””
I stared at him.
“You mean you would lose me.””
His silence confirmed it.
I laughed softly.
“Julian, you already lost me.””
He looked down.
I turned away.
“Tell me everything.””
He sat quietly for a moment.
Then he began.
“My father believed your mother knew where your father hid important evidence.””
“Evidence against your family?””
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
“Financial records. Names. Transactions.””
I thought about the foundation.
The missing money.
The manipulated records.
“They were searching for my father’s evidence all this time.””
“Yes.””
“And they used my marriage to get close to me?””
Julian looked guilty.
“I don’t know.””
But he did.
Maybe not every detail.
But enough.
“Where is my mother now?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why did Ethan find her?””
Julian showed me another message.
From Ethan.
*She knows the truth. She knows who started everything.*
My heart raced.
“She knows?””
Julian nodded.
“Ethan said your mother has been hiding because she was afraid.””
“Afraid of who?””
He looked at me.
“Your family’s enemies.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
The room became silent.
Because suddenly something didn’t fit.
If my mother had been alive all this time…
Why didn’t she come back?
Why let me believe she was dead?
Why let me grow up without her?
“I need to talk to her.””
Julian nodded.
“I thought you would say that.””
“You know where she is?””
“No.””
“Then find out.””
He looked surprised.
“You trust me?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“But I know you need answers too.””
That was the truth.
Because Julian wasn’t just searching for forgiveness.
He was searching for the reason his entire life had collapsed.
Before he left, he stopped at the door.
“Clara.””
I looked at him.
“I really did love you.””
I almost believed him.
Almost.
But love without honesty was just another kind of damage.
“I know.””
His expression changed.
“Then why?””
“Because loving someone doesn’t mean you get to destroy them.””
He lowered his eyes.
And for once…
He had nothing to say.
Two days later, Ethan contacted us.
Not Julian.
Me.
The message was short.
*I can tell you where your mother is. Come alone.*
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
But curiosity had become stronger than fear.
I met Ethan in an abandoned office building outside the city.
The place looked forgotten.
Dust covered the floors.
The windows were cracked.
A perfect place for someone hiding.
When Ethan walked in, I barely recognized him.
He looked exhausted.
Older.
Like he had spent months running.
“You’re alive.””
He gave a sad smile.
“Yes.””
“Why did you disappear?””
His expression changed.
“Because I found out who was behind everything.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“I think you already know.””
I hated that answer.
Everyone kept saying it.
Everyone assumed I understood.
But I didn’t.
“I’m tired of guessing.””
Ethan nodded.
“You deserve the truth.””
He placed a folder on the table.
“This is everything I found.””
I opened it.
And the first page made my hands freeze.
A photograph.
My mother.
Standing beside Richard Hale.
And another person.
Someone I never expected.
Julian’s father.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Ethan sighed.
“Your mother wasn’t just a victim.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“She was involved.””
The words felt like a betrayal.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
I looked back at the photograph.
My mother.
The woman I spent years mourning.
The woman I thought was innocent.
“What did she do?””
Ethan looked at me.
“She helped create the plan that destroyed your father.””
The room spun.
“No.””
“And then she tried to stop it.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“She realized too late that the people she trusted were willing to destroy everyone.””
“Then why didn’t she come back?””
Ethan’s voice became softer.
“Because she believed coming back would put you in danger.””
I looked at the folder.
My entire life was a mystery built on secrets.

And now the person I missed most…
Was connected to the reason I lost everything.
