Chapter 4: The Name Hidden Inside The DNA Report
The silence after Dr. Vance’s question felt heavier than any accusation.
“Whose child is he?””
Nobody moved.
Not Julian.
Not Sienna.
Not even the people pretending not to listen anymore.
The hallway that had once been filled with whispers now held only the sound of the baby’s soft breathing.
A year ago, I would have given anything to have that moment.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Not because I wanted to see Julian suffer.
But because I wanted the truth to finally matter.
For twelve months, I had carried a story that wasn’t mine.
A story Julian created.
A story Sienna helped spread.
A story where I was the woman who failed.
The wife who couldn’t give her husband a family.
The person everyone felt sorry for.
But now the truth was standing right in front of them.
And Julian was finally beginning to understand that the life he had built was not as perfect as he wanted everyone to believe.
“Sienna.””
His voice was different.
The arrogance was gone.
She looked at him.
And for the first time since I had known her, she looked truly afraid.
“Julian, don’t do this here.””
That sentence alone said more than any confession could.
Because innocent people ask questions.
Guilty people ask for privacy.
Dr. Vance held the DNA report in his hand.
“This test was performed after Clara requested a full review of the medical inconsistencies connected to her divorce case.””
Julian looked at me.
“You tested my son?””
The way he said it almost sounded like I was the one who had done something wrong.
I stared back.
“No.””
I kept my voice steady.
“I searched for the truth.””
Sienna’s eyes flashed with anger.
“You had no right.””
I almost smiled.
No right?
The woman who destroyed my marriage was telling me about rights.
The woman who sat beside me while I cried after every failed treatment.
The woman who hugged me and said, “I’m here for you.””
The same woman who later stood beside my husband and watched him tell the world I was the problem.
“You’re right,” I said quietly.
“I didn’t have the right to know what happened to me.””
My words made her uncomfortable.
Because they were true.
Dr. Vance opened the report.
“According to the results, the child is not genetically related to Julian Hayes.””
Julian stopped breathing.
For a moment, he looked like he didn’t understand the language.
Then he laughed.
A strange, broken laugh.
“No.””
Nobody answered.
He looked at Dr. Vance.
“No. Run it again.””
“It has already been verified.””
“You’re wrong.””
Dr. Vance remained calm.
“I’m not.””
Julian stepped back.
The baby in Sienna’s arms started crying.
The sound seemed to wake everyone from the shock.
Sienna immediately tried to comfort him.
But Julian wasn’t looking at the child anymore.
He was looking at her.
“Who is his father?””
Sienna’s lips trembled.
“Julian…”
“Who?””
His voice echoed down the hallway.
The same voice he once used during business meetings.
The voice that intimidated employees.
The voice that convinced people he was always right.
But now it carried something different.
Desperation.
Sienna looked around.
Searching for an escape.
There wasn’t one.
“You don’t understand.””
Julian stared at her.
“Then explain it.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I watched the woman who once destroyed my life finally experience what it felt like to have no words left.
Dr. Vance folded the report.
“The biological father was identified through the DNA comparison.””
Julian turned.
“Who?””
The doctor hesitated.
Just for a moment.
Then he said:
“Ethan Cole.””
The name landed like a bomb.
Julian’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
Sienna closed her eyes.
And that was when Julian knew.
Because her reaction confirmed everything.
“Ethan?””
His voice became a whisper.
“You’re telling me Ethan?””
I remembered that name.
Everyone in our circle knew Ethan Cole.
Julian’s childhood friend.
His business partner.
The man who attended our wedding.
The man who gave a speech about how lucky Julian was to have found me.
The man who visited our home countless times.
The man who Sienna always claimed was “just like a brother.””
Apparently, everyone had been wrong.
Julian looked at Sienna.
“How long?””
She cried.
“Julian…”
“How long?””
Her silence answered.
His expression collapsed.
And suddenly I saw something unexpected.
Not anger.
Pain.
The kind of pain I had carried alone for a year.
The kind of pain that comes when someone you trusted destroys the reality you thought you knew.
“I left my wife because I thought she betrayed me,” Julian whispered.
His eyes moved toward me.
“And all this time…”
He couldn’t finish.
Because the truth was too humiliating.
He had destroyed his marriage.
He had abandoned the woman who loved him.
He had publicly shamed me.
All because he believed a lie.
A lie created by the two people standing closest to him.
Sienna started crying.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
I looked at her.
“You never wanted what?””
She looked at me.
“To hurt you.””
The words were almost unbelievable.
“You never wanted to hurt me?””
My voice was quiet.
“That’s interesting.””
She wiped her tears.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made choices.””
She looked away.
Because she knew the difference.
A mistake happens accidentally.
A choice happens when someone knows exactly what they’re doing.
Dr. Vance looked at me.
“Clara, there is one more thing you should know.””
I turned.
“One more thing?””
He nodded.
“The fertility report was altered after your final appointment.””
Julian looked up.
“What?””
Dr. Vance continued.
“The original report showed that your chances of conceiving naturally were normal. The information claiming you were infertile was added later.””
My heart stopped.
Even though I already knew the truth was coming, hearing it still hurt.
Someone had taken my deepest fear.
My most painful moment.
And turned it into a weapon.
“Who changed it?”” I asked.
Dr. Vance looked serious.
“We’re still investigating.””
Julian stared at Sienna.
But she didn’t deny anything anymore.
And that was the most powerful confession of all.
Because sometimes silence reveals what words try to hide.
I walked toward the elevator.
I had waited a year for this moment.
I had imagined feeling satisfaction.
Victory.
Relief.
But I felt something else.
Freedom.
Because the truth wasn’t about destroying Julian.
It was about finally letting go of the version of myself he created.
As the elevator doors opened, Julian called my name.
“Clara.””
I stopped.
I didn’t turn around.
“I’m sorry.””
The words were quiet.
Almost broken.
A year ago, I would have dreamed of hearing them.
But now?
They were too late.
“You should have believed me before you apologized,” I said.
May you like
Then I stepped into the elevator.
And left behind the man who thought losing me was his smartest decision.
