Chapter 8: The Man From My Father’s Past Returns
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the message.
*Don’t make me take more from you.*
The words weren’t a warning.
They were a promise.
And whoever sent them knew exactly how to scare me.
They knew my history.
They knew my pain.
They knew I had already lost everything once.
By morning, I had made a decision.
I was done running.
For twelve months, I had disappeared because I was hurt.
Because I was ashamed.
Because I thought staying invisible would keep me safe.
But hiding had never protected me.
It only allowed other people to control the story.
I called Dr. Vance.
“I need your help.””
“What happened?””
“I need everything connected to Richard Hale.””
There was a pause.
Then:
“I’ll see what I can find.””
An hour later, I received a call from an unexpected person.
Richard Hale.
I almost didn’t answer.
But curiosity won.
“Clara.””
His voice was older than I remembered.
Calmer.
More controlled.
“Richard.””
“I heard you’ve been asking questions.””
I didn’t respond.
He continued.
“I’m disappointed.””
“Why?””
“Because I hoped you would never have to discover this.””
The sentence bothered me.
“You knew?””
Silence.
“You knew what happened to me?””
“I knew something was wrong.””
My hands tightened.
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
His voice hardened slightly.
“It isn’t.””
“Then give me one.””
Another pause.
“Meet me.””
“Where?””
“The old Hale office.””
I knew the building.
It had been my father’s favorite place to visit.
A place filled with memories.
A place I hadn’t entered since his funeral.
“I’ll be there.””
When I arrived, Richard was waiting.
He looked different.
Older.
Tired.
Not like the powerful businessman everyone feared.
Like someone carrying years of regret.
“You look like your father.””
I hated that sentence.
Because people always said it when they wanted to avoid the real conversation.
“My father trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“And you betrayed him?””
Richard looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“What?””
“I made mistakes.””
Again.
That word.
I stepped closer.
“I’m tired of people using that word.””
Richard looked at me.
“You should be.””
“Tell me the truth.””
He nodded.
“Your father discovered financial fraud inside his company.””
I listened.
“The person responsible was protected by someone powerful.””
“Who?””
Richard hesitated.
Then:
“Myself.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I helped cover it.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone is always afraid after they hurt someone.””
He accepted that.
“I know.””
“So what does this have to do with Julian?””
Richard looked toward the window.
“Julian’s company became involved with the same people.””
“And Ethan?””
“He discovered it.””
I remembered the message.
Ethan knew.
“He tried to expose them?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he disappear?””
Richard’s expression changed.
“Because he got too close.””
A chill moved through me.
“Are you saying he was taken?””
“I don’t know.””
“You know more than you’re telling me.””
Richard looked at me.
“You have your father’s instincts.””
“I have my father’s anger.””
He almost smiled.
“Maybe both.””
I placed my hands on the desk.
“I want the truth.””
“You may not like it.””
“I didn’t like the lie.””
That silenced him.
Finally, Richard opened a drawer.
Inside was a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew someday you would come.””
I took it.
“What is it?””
“Something your father left behind.””
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
My father’s handwriting.
The sight alone almost broke me.
*Clara, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.*
My eyes filled instantly.
I continued.
*Trust nobody who tells you that you are weak. The people who fear you will always try to convince you that you are powerless.*
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Richard answered quietly.
“Your father knew someone was trying to take everything from him.””
My heart raced.
“And?””
“He also knew they might come after you.””
The room felt colder.
“Who?””
Richard looked at me.
“I think you already know.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
May you like
And then he said the name I wasn’t ready to hear.
“Your ex-husband’s family.””
