Chapter 2: The Records That Exposed Their Biggest Lie
For several seconds, nobody reacted.
It was as if the entire hospital hallway had stopped breathing.
Julian stared at Dr. Vance.
Then at me.
Then back at the sealed envelope in the doctor’s hand.
“That’s impossible.””
His voice was quieter now.
Not confident.
Not mocking.
Just confused.
Dr. Vance remained calm.
“Is it?””
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“You’re telling me the doctors were wrong?””
“No,” Dr. Vance replied.
“I’m telling you the records you were given were incomplete and manipulated.””
Sienna’s face lost all color.
I watched her carefully.
A year ago, I would have missed the small signs.
The way her fingers trembled.
The way she avoided eye contact.
The way her breathing changed when certain words were spoken.
But pain teaches you things.
Betrayal teaches you things.
And I had learned how to recognize fear.
“What does that mean?”” Julian demanded.
Dr. Vance opened the envelope.
“Before I answer, I need Clara to confirm something.””
He turned toward me.
“Clara, when you received your final fertility report twelve months ago, did you personally collect it from the clinic?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Julian frowned.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“I was too devastated.””
The memory returned instantly.
That horrible afternoon.
The cold office.
The doctor’s sympathetic expression.
The words I never wanted to hear.
“We’re sorry, Clara. Your chances are extremely low.””
I remembered crying in the car afterward.
I remembered calling Julian.
I remembered hearing disappointment in his silence.
Not sadness.
Not concern.
Disappointment.
“I asked Julian to pick up the documents,” I continued.
The color drained from his face.
“You did what?””
“I trusted my husband.””
The silence that followed was heavier than before.
Because everyone understood.
I didn’t need to accuse him.
I simply needed to remind everyone of the truth.
Julian was the person who had controlled the information.
Dr. Vance nodded.
“That is exactly what our investigation discovered.””
He removed several pages from the envelope.
“These are copies of the original laboratory reports.””
He handed one to me.
My hands shook slightly.
Not from fear.
From finally seeing proof.
The truth I had searched for.
The truth I had almost convinced myself didn’t exist.
Dr. Vance continued.
“The original results showed normal ovarian function. Your hormone levels were within expected range. There was no medical evidence indicating infertility.””
Julian stared.
“No.””
The word escaped him before he could stop it.
Dr. Vance looked at him.
“Yes.””
“No,” Julian repeated.
“That’s not possible.””
Sienna suddenly stepped forward.
“Maybe there was a mistake.””
Everyone looked at her.
She immediately realized she had spoken too quickly.
Dr. Vance noticed too.
“A mistake?””
Sienna swallowed.
“I mean… medical records can be complicated.””
“Interesting,” Dr. Vance said.
“Because that was the exact explanation given when several documents disappeared from Clara’s file.””
My heart stopped.
Julian looked at Sienna.
“What?””
She avoided his eyes.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
Enough for me.
Enough for Dr. Vance.
Enough for everyone watching.
Julian turned back toward me.
“What are you saying?””
I held his gaze.
“I’m saying someone wanted me to believe I couldn’t have children.””
His face hardened.
“You think I did this?””
I didn’t answer.
Because the evidence was already speaking.
Dr. Vance placed another document on the table.
“This is the chain-of-access report.””
Julian looked confused.
“What is that?””
“It shows who accessed Clara’s medical records, when they accessed them, and what changes were made afterward.””
Sienna stepped backward.
Only one step.
But everyone noticed.
Julian looked at her.
“Sienna?””
She shook her head.
“Don’t look at me like that.””
“Why shouldn’t I?””
“Because you’re acting like I did something.””
The way she said it was almost convincing.
Almost.
But I knew Sienna.
She always became defensive when she was close to being exposed.
Dr. Vance continued.
“Two months before the divorce was filed, someone accessed Clara’s records using an unauthorized login.””
Julian’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Dr. Vance looked down.
Then back up.
“The account belonged to an employee who worked under Sienna Blake.””
The silence was immediate.
Sienna’s lips parted.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
“No,” Dr. Vance agreed.
“It doesn’t.””
He paused.
“But the security footage does.””
Julian looked stunned.
“There’s footage?””
Dr. Vance nodded.
“Someone entered the records department after hours.””
Sienna’s expression collapsed.
I felt something inside me finally release.
For a year, I had carried the weight of everyone believing I was the problem.
A year of shame.
A year of wondering why I wasn’t enough.
But now the truth was standing in front of everyone.
I wasn’t broken.
I was betrayed.
Julian looked at me.
His anger was gone.
Replaced by something worse.
Doubt.
“You knew?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
I almost laughed.
Because even now, after everything, he still thought the story was about what I failed to say.
Not what he chose to do.
“Because you never asked.””
His expression changed.
I continued.
“You already decided who I was.””
Julian looked away.
For the first time, he had no argument.
No clever response.
No excuse.
Then Dr. Vance pulled out one final document.
But this time, he didn’t hand it to me.
He looked at Julian.
“This is the second reason I came today.””
Julian frowned.
“What second reason?””
Dr. Vance glanced at the child in Sienna’s arms.
The little boy who had been presented as Julian’s greatest achievement.
The baby Julian proudly showed the world.
The baby he used to prove he had been right to leave me.
Dr. Vance spoke carefully.
“The fertility records were not the only documents that were altered.””
Sienna froze.
Julian looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Dr. Vance opened the final report.
“A DNA test.””
The hallway became silent again.
Julian stared.
“DNA?””
Dr. Vance nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked at the child.
“Because there is a question regarding the biological father of that child.””
Sienna’s entire body went still.
Julian noticed.
And slowly…
Very slowly…
The confidence returned to his face.
But this time, it wasn’t arrogance.
It was fear.
“Tell me,” Julian whispered.
“Whose child is he?””
May you like
Dr. Vance looked directly at Sienna.
And the answer he gave next would destroy the life she built on a lie.
