Chapter 6: The Enemy Behind The Perfect Marriage

I met Julian that afternoon in a quiet corner of a coffee shop far from the hospital.

Not because I trusted him.

Not because I forgave him.

But because I needed answers.

For the first time in a year, Julian wasn’t trying to impress anyone.

No expensive suit.

No arrogant smile.

No performance.

Just a tired man sitting across from me, looking like he had aged ten years overnight.

“I know you hate me,” he said.

I stirred my coffee.

“I don’t hate you.””

He looked surprised.

“I don’t have enough energy to hate you anymore.””

The honesty hurt him more than anger would have.

He looked down.

“I deserved that.””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

No excuses.

That was new.

“I found Ethan’s old files.””

My attention sharpened.

“What files?””

“Business records.””

He pushed a folder across the table.

I didn’t touch it immediately.

“What does this have to do with me?””

“Everything.””

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Financial transfers.

Emails.

Private messages.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

Ethan Cole.

“What am I looking at?””

Julian rubbed his forehead.

“Before the divorce, Ethan was secretly investigating my company.””

“Why?””

“He believed I was hiding money.””

I looked through the pages.

“And were you?””

Julian didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation told me enough.

“Julian.””

He sighed.

“Yes.””

I looked up.

“How much?””

“A lot.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I made mistakes.””

I almost smiled.

There it was.

The same phrase.

Mistakes.

Everyone loved that word when they wanted forgiveness without accountability.

“What kind of mistakes?””

He looked away.

“Financial decisions.””

“Illegal?””

His silence answered.

My stomach tightened.

“So Ethan knew?””

“Yes.””

“And Sienna?””

“I don’t know.””

But he did.

I could see it.

“You’re still protecting her.””

Julian looked at me.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I closed the folder.

“You protected her for a year.””

He looked wounded.

But he couldn’t deny it.

The truth was uncomfortable when it came from someone else.

“I thought she saved me,” he whispered.

Those words were almost sad.

Almost.

“She made me believe you were the reason my life was falling apart.””

I stared at him.

“And now?””

“Now I know I was the reason.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Julian said:

“There’s something you need to see.””

He pulled out his phone.

A message.

From Ethan.

Sent three days before he disappeared.

I read it.

My blood ran cold.

*Julian will eventually discover the truth. When he does, make sure Clara gets the evidence. She deserves to know she was never the problem.*

I looked up.

“Ethan wrote this?””

Julian nodded.

“Why would he help me?””

“I don’t know.””

I read the message again.

Something didn’t make sense.

Ethan had betrayed Julian.

But he also seemed to know I was innocent.

There was another piece missing.

“What happened to him?””

Julian looked serious.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“The police found his car.””

I waited.

“But they didn’t find Ethan.””

A chill moved through me.

“Are you saying he’s missing?””

Julian nodded.

“Yes.””

The world suddenly felt much larger.

This wasn’t just about a failed marriage anymore.

This wasn’t just about Sienna’s betrayal.

Someone had been moving pieces behind the scenes.

Someone who knew the truth.

Someone who wanted Julian exposed.

And someone who wanted me to eventually find out.

I looked at the folder between us.

“What are you not telling me?””

Julian’s face changed.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

He took a deep breath.

“The day before Ethan disappeared…”

He paused.

“He called me.””

“What did he say?””

Julian looked directly at me.

“He said the person who destroyed our lives wasn’t Sienna.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who was it?””

Julian’s voice became barely audible.

“He said we had both been manipulated.””

A cold silence filled the space between us.

Because suddenly, the question wasn’t whether Julian had lied.

He had.

The question wasn’t whether Sienna betrayed me.

She did.

The real question was something much bigger.
