Chapter 7: The Secret Account That Changed Everything
The folder Julian gave me stayed on my kitchen table for three days.
I didn’t open it again.
Not because I wasn’t curious.
Because I was terrified of what else I might find.
For a year, I believed my life had been destroyed by two people.
Julian.
Sienna.
Two people who betrayed me.
Two people who chose their own happiness over my pain.
But now there was something else.
A shadow behind the betrayal.
Someone who had moved quietly.
Someone who had manipulated information, altered records, and pushed everyone toward a conclusion that benefited them.
And the worst part?
I didn’t know if I had been the target…
Or if I had simply been collateral damage.
I sat in my apartment staring at the folder.
The same apartment everyone believed was proof that I had lost.
They saw a woman who had fallen.
They didn’t see a woman who had survived.
The phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Dr. Vance.
I answered immediately.
“Doctor?””
“Clara, I need you to come to the hospital.””
His tone made my stomach tighten.
“What happened?””
“I found something.””
The words were simple.
But after everything that had happened, simple words carried dangerous meanings.
“What did you find?””
“I don’t want to discuss it over the phone.””
I grabbed my coat.
“I’ll be there.””
When I arrived at St. Jude’s, Dr. Vance was waiting in his office.
Unlike the hallway days earlier, there was no crowd.
No witnesses.
No dramatic reveal.
Just two people sitting in a quiet room with too many unanswered questions.
He placed a file on the desk.
“This came from the hospital archive.””
I frowned.
“Your archive?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Because someone tried to erase the original records.””
My heart sank.
“Again?””
He nodded.
“This wasn’t just your fertility file.””
I opened the file.
Inside were documents from the reproductive center.
Patient transfers.
Appointment schedules.
Internal communication.
Then I saw a familiar name.
Julian Hayes.
I looked up.
“What does Julian have to do with hospital records?””
Dr. Vance folded his hands.
“That’s what I wanted to understand.””
I continued reading.
A message from an administrator caught my attention.
*Confirm that the requested modification has been completed. The patient must remain unaware until final processing.*
My hands went cold.
“Who requested this?””
Dr. Vance hesitated.
“We traced the request.””
“To who?””
He looked at me.
“An organization connected to your charity foundation.””
My breath stopped.
My foundation.
The one Julian and Sienna took control of after the divorce.
The foundation I created years before.
The foundation that helped families struggling with medical costs.
“Why would my foundation be involved?””
“That’s what doesn’t make sense.””
He pointed at another document.
“Your foundation’s accounts show several unusual transfers.””
I studied the numbers.
Large amounts.
Much larger than anything normal.
“Someone was moving money.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“We don’t know yet.””
I stared at the papers.
The pieces were beginning to connect.
My medical records.
The divorce.
The foundation.
Ethan’s investigation.
They weren’t separate events.
They were part of the same story.
Someone wanted Julian gone.
Someone wanted control.
And somehow, I had been placed at the center.
“Dr. Vance…”
“Yes?””
“Do you think Julian knew?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
“I think Julian knew less than he believed.””
That was the most frustrating part.
Julian had hurt me.
But maybe he had also been used.
And somehow, that made everything more complicated.
Later that evening, Julian came to my apartment.
I almost didn’t open the door.
But when I saw his expression through the window, I knew something had changed.
“What happened?””
He held up a document.
“I found the person who controlled the account.””
I opened the door.
“Come in.””
He stepped inside slowly.
Looking around the small apartment.
I noticed his eyes pause on the simple furniture.
The old bookshelf.
The tiny kitchen.
The life I built without him.
“I never thought you’d actually be okay without me.””
I looked at him.
“That was your mistake.””
He lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
He handed me the document.
“This is the account information.””
I read the name.
Then froze.
Because the account holder wasn’t Sienna.
It wasn’t Ethan.
It wasn’t even someone I knew.
It belonged to a company.
A private investment firm.
“What is this?””
Julian sat down.
“A company that invested in mine.””
“Invested in yours?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Six months before our divorce.””
I looked at him.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
His silence was immediate.
I laughed softly.
“Of course.””
Julian looked ashamed.
“I was trying to expand.””
“So you accepted money from strangers?””
“I thought they were legitimate.””
“And they weren’t?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
The room became quiet.
“Who owns the company?””
Julian looked at me.
“That’s the part you won’t believe.””
I waited.
“The owner is someone connected to you.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Who?””
Julian took a deep breath.
“Your father’s former business partner.””
I froze.
My father had passed away years ago.
But his old company had been involved in several legal battles before he died.
A name from my childhood.
A name I hadn’t heard in years.
“Richard Hale?””
Julian nodded.
“Yes.””
I felt a strange wave of disbelief.
Richard Hale.
The man who attended my father’s funeral.
The man who told me he would always protect my family.
The man who had once told me:
“Your father trusted the wrong people.””
I stood up.
“This can’t be coincidence.””
“No.””
Julian looked serious.
“It isn’t.””
I looked at the documents again.
Suddenly, the entire year made sense in a terrifying way.
My divorce wasn’t just about a broken marriage.
It was about money.
Power.
Control.
And someone had destroyed my reputation to make sure nobody looked deeper.
Then my phone received a message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Stop searching, Clara. You already lost once. Don’t make me take more from you.*
My blood ran cold.
Julian saw my expression.
“What is it?””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
And for the first time since I had known him…
I saw genuine fear.
“Clara.””
“What?””
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Richard Hale doesn’t threaten people.””
May you like
A pause.
“He removes them.””
