Chapter 5: The Woman Who Stole My Life Begged For Mercy
The next morning, my phone exploded.
Messages.
Missed calls.
Notifications.
Everyone suddenly remembered my name.
The same people who disappeared when Julian announced our divorce were now desperate to talk.
I ignored them.
For a year, I had begged people to listen.
Nobody did.
Now they wanted explanations.
Now they wanted the truth.
But I had learned something important.
Truth does not become valuable because people finally decide to believe it.
It was always valuable.
They were simply too comfortable with the lie.
I sat in my small apartment above the bakery, watching sunlight enter through the old window.
The apartment was nothing like the house Julian and I shared.
The kitchen was tiny.
The furniture was secondhand.
The walls were plain.
But it was mine.
Nobody could take it.
Nobody could rewrite the story of how I got there.
My phone rang again.
This time, I answered.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I knew who it was.
“Clara.””
Sienna’s voice came through.
Weak.
Different.
The confident woman from yesterday was gone.
“What do you want?””
There was a long pause.
“I need to see you.””
“No.””
“Please.””
I almost laughed.
Please.
A word I had used thousands of times during my marriage.
Please listen.
Please trust me.
Please don’t leave.
Nobody cared then.
“Why would I meet you?””
“Because you deserve answers.””
I looked out the window.
“No, Sienna.””
My voice was calm.
“I deserved answers a year ago.””
She was silent.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
Sienna rarely admitted anything.
“I was horrible to you.””
I closed my eyes.
An apology from the person who hurt you can be complicated.
Sometimes it heals.
Sometimes it only reminds you how long you waited.
“Tell me the truth,” I said.
She breathed in.
“I never planned to fall in love with Julian.””
I felt nothing.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Nothing.
Because the woman who once broke my heart no longer had the power to do it.
“I didn’t ask about your feelings.””
She became quiet.
“I know.””
“Tell me what happened.””
For several seconds, all I heard was her breathing.
Then she spoke.
“It started after your second failed treatment.””
I gripped the phone.
“The one after I told you I was struggling?””
“Yes.””
The memory came back.
Sienna sitting beside me.
Holding my hand.
Telling me I was still a complete woman.
I believed her.
“I was jealous of you.””
The confession surprised me.
“Jealous?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She laughed softly.
“Because everyone loved you.””
I frowned.
“That’s what this was about?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“It was about everything you had.””
She explained.
She hated how people respected me.
How Julian trusted me.
How I built the charity foundation that carried my name.
How I could walk into a room and people noticed me.
“I thought you had everything.””
I stared at the wall.
She had never seen the nights I cried.
The treatments.
The fear.
The loneliness.
People often envy what they only see from the outside.
“When Julian started complaining, I listened.””
My stomach tightened.
“He complained about me?””
“He said he felt trapped.””
Of course.
Julian had always been good at making himself the victim.
“He told me he wanted a child more than anything.””
Sienna paused.
“And then he told me he believed you were the reason he couldn’t have one.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain wasn’t new.
But hearing it from her still felt like reopening an old wound.
“What happened next?””
“He kissed me.””
The room became silent.
“And you?””
“I should have stopped it.””
At least she finally admitted it.
“But I didn’t.””
I looked down at my hands.
The same hands that signed divorce papers.
The same hands that packed my belongings.
The same hands that rebuilt my life.
“You didn’t just betray me.””
My voice was low.
“You helped him destroy me.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I interrupted.
“You don’t know.””
She started crying.
“You’re right.””
Another silence.
Then she whispered:
“There’s something else.””
I waited.
“Julian didn’t know the baby wasn’t his.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“I found out after he filed for divorce.””
My heart slowed.
“You’re saying he left me because he thought I couldn’t give him a child…”
“Yes.””
“And then he raised another man’s son without knowing?””
“Yes.””
For the first time, I almost felt sorry for Julian.
Almost.
But then I remembered the way he humiliated me.
The way he let people believe I was broken.
The way he walked away.
“What happened to Ethan?””
Sienna went silent.
That silence frightened me.
“Sienna?””
“He disappeared.””
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
But something in her voice told me she knew more.
Before I could question her, another call came through.
Julian.
I looked at the screen.
After everything…
He was finally calling.
Sienna heard the silence.
“Is it him?””
“Yes.””
“Clara…”
I hesitated.
Then answered.
“Julian?””
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
“I found something.””
My expression changed.
“What?””
His voice was broken.
“Something about Ethan.””
I stood up.
“What about him?””
Julian swallowed.
“He didn’t just have an affair with Sienna.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Then what?””
“He was investigating me.””
I froze.
“What?””
Julian continued.
“Ethan knew something was wrong before anyone else did.””
The room suddenly felt smaller.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying…”
His voice dropped.
“The affair wasn’t the biggest secret.””
May you like
A pause.
“The biggest secret is why Ethan wanted to destroy my life.””
