Chapter 9: The Evidence Buried In The Walls

The following week changed everything.

Because once you know a secret exists, you start seeing signs everywhere.

The Mercer family had spent years hiding the truth.

But they had made one mistake.

They believed nobody would ever look closely.

I started looking closely.

And I found things.

Small things.

Things that didn't mean much alone.

But together, they created a picture.

A terrifying one.

The first thing I found was about Emily's finances.

Daniel had always told me his sister was financially dependent because she couldn't manage money.

That wasn't true.

Emily had a trust fund.

A significant one.

But according to the records I discovered through public documents, she had almost no access to it.

The account existed.

The money existed.

But every withdrawal required approval from a family-controlled administrator.

Victoria.

I stared at the document.

Emily wasn't unable to leave.

She had been financially prevented from leaving.

The second thing was worse.

A former employee.

Her name was Linda.

She had worked for the Mercer family for twelve years.

I found her through an old charity article.

After several messages, she agreed to meet.

We sat in a quiet cafe.

She looked nervous.

"I shouldn't be talking about this.""

"Why?""

"Because the Mercers don't like people remembering things.""

That sentence sounded familiar.

"What happened with Emily?""

Linda looked down.

"She used to be different.""

"How?""

"Happy.""

The word was simple.

But painful.

"She laughed all the time.""

I imagined that.

Emily laughing.

Being free.

"Then what happened?""

Linda sighed.

"Mrs. Mercer decided Emily needed discipline.""

My stomach tightened.

"Discipline?""

"She called it that.""

Linda looked at me.

"But it wasn't.""

"What was it?""

"Control.""

I waited.

"Food restrictions. Isolation. Constant criticism.""

I felt sick.

"Why didn't anyone help?""

Linda's eyes filled with regret.

"Because we all thought someone else would.""

That answer hurt.

Because it was probably true.

Everyone saw something.

Nobody did enough.

"What about Daniel?""

Linda hesitated.

"He loved Emily.""

Past tense.

"Did he?""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't he help?""

Linda looked away.

"Because he loved his mother too.""

That evening, I met Emily.

I didn't tell her everything I learned.

Not yet.

Instead, I asked:

"Did you ever try to get your money?""

She looked surprised.

"How did you know about that?""

I showed her the document.

Her face changed.

"I didn't know.""

"What?""

"My mother told me my accounts were frozen because I was irresponsible.""

I stared at her.

Another lie.

Another piece of control.

Emily laughed quietly.

But tears filled her eyes.

"How many things did she take from me?""

I didn't know what to say.

Then she whispered:

"I don't even know who I am anymore.""

That broke my heart.

Because for years, someone had convinced her she couldn't trust herself.

And eventually, she started believing it.

When I returned home, Daniel was waiting.

But this time, he wasn't angry.

He looked scared.

"Claire.""

I stopped.

"What happened?""

He held up his phone.

"My mother knows you're investigating.""

My stomach dropped.

"How?""

"I don't know.""

"You don't know?""

"No.""

He stepped closer.

"Claire, you need to stop.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because she will destroy you.""

The seriousness in his voice made me pause.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I finally understood.

Daniel wasn't protecting his mother.

He was afraid of her.

"Why didn't you tell me that before?""

He looked away.

"Because I was ashamed.""

"Of what?""

"That I let it happen.""

The honesty surprised me.

But it wasn't enough.

Not anymore.

"Daniel.""

He looked at me.

"If you knew your mother was hurting Emily...""

His eyes closed.

"I know.""

The words were barely a whisper.

I froze.

"What?""

"I know.""

The room went silent.

"You knew?""

He nodded.

"Not everything.""

"But enough.""

"Yes.""

My heart broke.

Not because he failed.

Because he had admitted he watched.

And he still stayed silent.

"Why?""

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw the full weight of his guilt.

"Because I thought if I kept the peace, eventually things would get better.""

I stared at him.

"But they didn't.""

"No.""

His voice cracked.

"They got worse.""

And then he said the sentence that changed everything.

"Claire, my mother didn't just control Emily.""

He swallowed.

"She controlled all of us.""

I looked at him.

"What are you saying?""

Daniel reached into his desk drawer.

Pulled out an old envelope.

And placed it in front of me.

"This is what I've been afraid of you finding.""

Inside was a letter.

Written five years earlier.

Signed by Emily.

May you like

The first line made my blood run cold.

"Dear Daniel, if anything happens to me, please don't let Mom tell everyone I was crazy.""
