Chapter 25: The Secret Richard Buried For Thirty Years

The Mercer family had finally reached the point where every truth seemed to lead to another secret.

Every door they opened revealed another hallway.

Every answer created another question.

And after everything we had discovered, I thought nothing could surprise me anymore.

I was wrong.

Because the biggest secret was not Victoria's.

It was Richard's.

The man who spent years blaming himself for staying silent.

The man who apologized for allowing Victoria's control.

The man who claimed he wanted the truth.

He had been hiding something too.

Natalie placed the documents on the table.

Nobody touched them.

Not immediately.

Because everyone knew.

The moment someone opened that folder, the Mercer family's final illusion would disappear.

"Where did you get these?"" Daniel asked.

Natalie looked at Richard.

"From someone who worked with your father.""

Richard's face changed.

"You found him?""

Natalie nodded.

"Someone who was there thirty years ago.""

I looked at Richard.

"Who?""

He didn't answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Richard always looked afraid.

But this was different.

This was recognition.

Daniel opened the folder.

The first page was a business document.

The second was a letter.

The third was a photograph.

Richard Mercer standing beside Marcus Vale.

But not as enemies.

As partners.

Daniel froze.

"Why are you in this picture?""

Richard closed his eyes.

"Because I knew him.""

"Everyone knew that.""

"No.""

Richard looked up.

"You don't understand.""

His voice became quiet.

"I knew what he was doing.""

The room went still.

"What does that mean?"" Emily asked.

Richard stared at the table.

"It means I wasn't just a victim.""

Nobody spoke.

The words seemed impossible.

Richard Mercer.

The quiet father.

The man who allowed his family to suffer.

The man who spent years apologizing.

A victim and something else.

Something darker.

Richard finally told the truth.

Thirty years earlier, before Daniel was born, Richard discovered Marcus was manipulating the family business.

He knew Marcus was moving money.

He knew Marcus was threatening people.

He knew.

But he didn't expose him.

"Why?""

Daniel's voice was full of pain.

Richard looked at his son.

"Because Marcus had something on me.""

"What?""

Richard swallowed.

"Your grandfather.""

Nobody moved.

"What about him?""

"My father wasn't just irresponsible.""

Richard looked away.

"He was dangerous.""

The room became silent.

Richard explained that his father had built the family fortune through questionable decisions.

Illegal deals.

Hidden agreements.

People hurt along the way.

When Marcus discovered the truth, he used it as leverage.

"He told me if I went against him, he would destroy everything.""

Daniel shook his head.

"So you stayed quiet.""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

"You let him control you.""

"Yes.""

Emily looked hurt.

"Just like Mom.""

The sentence hit harder than anyone expected.

Because it was true.

Different person.

Different method.

Same result.

Fear.

Richard admitted something else.

The night Charlotte disappeared, he knew more than he told anyone.

Daniel stood immediately.

"What?""

Richard looked devastated.

"I knew she had found the documents.""

"Which documents?""

"The ones about Marcus.""

The room froze.

"Charlotte wasn't only investigating your mother," Richard said.

"She was investigating him.""

Emily looked confused.

"Why didn't you help her?""

Richard's eyes filled with regret.

"Because I was afraid.""

Again.

That word.

The word that had destroyed generations.

"I thought if I stayed quiet, I could keep everyone alive.""

Emily shook her head.

"But Charlotte disappeared anyway.""

Richard looked down.

"Yes.""

The truth about Charlotte became clearer.

She wasn't simply a daughter escaping a controlling mother.

She was a teenager who discovered a dangerous secret and tried to do what the adults around her refused to do.

Expose the truth.

But she had been alone.

A child fighting people with money, power, and influence.

And the adults who should have protected her were too afraid.

That night, Richard asked to speak with Charlotte.

She agreed.

Not because she had forgiven him.

Because she wanted answers.

I stayed outside the room with Daniel and Emily.

Nobody listened.

Nobody needed to.

Their voices carried.

"You knew.""

Charlotte's voice.

Richard replied:

"Yes.""

"Do you know how many years I wondered why nobody came after me?""

"I know.""

"No.""

Her voice broke.

"You don't.""

Silence.

Then Richard said:

"I was wrong.""

Charlotte answered quietly:

"Yes.""

No anger.

No shouting.

Just truth.

"I was seventeen years old.""

"I know.""

"I needed my family.""

Richard cried.

"I know.""

"And you let me disappear.""

The silence afterward was unbearable.

When Charlotte came out, she looked exhausted.

Not healed.

Not fixed.

But lighter.

"What did he say?""

She looked at Emily.

"The truth.""

That was all.

And somehow, it was enough.

The next morning, Marcus made his move.

A public statement appeared online.

He accused the Mercer family of fraud.

Financial crimes.

Cover-ups.

The entire city started talking.

News outlets picked up the story.

The Mercer name, once associated with success, became associated with scandal.

Natalie called it immediately.

"He's trying to destroy your reputation before you can expose him.""

Daniel looked at the screen.

"Can he?""

Natalie hesitated.

"Yes.""

That answer terrified everyone.

"Because?""

"Because he has evidence.""

"What evidence?""

Natalie looked at Richard.

"The kind that makes everyone look guilty.""

And then she said the sentence nobody wanted to hear.

May you like

"Marcus doesn't need to prove he's innocent.""

"He only needs people to believe the Mercers are worse.""
