Chapter 20: The Secret Behind The Money

The Mercer family had always been known for wealth.

Generations of investments.

Real estate.

Charitable foundations.

A reputation built over decades.

But Charlotte's letter suggested something different.

A secret behind the money.

Something even Emily's family didn't know.

Daniel spread the documents across the dining table.

"This can't be real.""

Richard stared at the papers.

But he didn't look surprised.

He looked defeated.

"What is it?"" Emily asked.

Richard took a long breath.

"Your grandfather.""

Everyone became silent.

"What about him?"" Daniel asked.

"He left behind debts.""

I frowned.

"Debts?""

Richard nodded.

"Massive ones.""

That didn't make sense.

The Mercer family had always appeared wealthy.

"Then how did they recover?""

Richard looked at Victoria.

And for the first time, Victoria looked afraid of her husband.

"Tell them.""

Richard's voice was quiet.

"Victoria found a solution.""

Everyone looked at her.

"What solution?""

She didn't answer.

Richard did.

"She used money that wasn't hers.""

The documents showed a complicated history.

Years earlier, before Richard's biggest success, the family had access to inherited funds.

Money intended for future generations.

Including Charlotte.

Including Daniel.

Including Emily.

But after the financial crisis, Victoria moved money around.

She believed she was protecting the family.

Saving the future.

But according to the documents, she had crossed lines.

She had hidden decisions.

Made transfers without approval.

Created a financial structure where nobody else could see what was happening.

"Why?"" Daniel asked.

Victoria looked exhausted.

"Because I was trying to save everything.""

"You stole from us.""

The pain in Daniel's voice was obvious.

Victoria closed her eyes.

"I borrowed.""

"Without telling anyone.""

"Yes.""

Emily looked at her.

"Charlotte found out.""

Victoria nodded.

That was the missing piece.

Charlotte hadn't just wanted freedom.

She had discovered the truth.

And Victoria had been terrified.

"Did you hurt her?""

The question came from Emily.

Nobody moved.

Not even Victoria.

The silence was unbearable.

Then:

"No.""

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Emily studied her.

"Did someone else?""

Victoria looked away.

And that was worse.

Because it wasn't an answer.

That afternoon, Daniel and I went through the old police records.

Not because we suspected murder.

Because we needed to understand.

The official report contained something strange.

A witness statement.

A person who saw Charlotte the night she disappeared.

A former neighbor.

The statement said Charlotte left the Mercer house with a man.

A man nobody identified.

The police never followed up.

"Why?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at the report.

"Because my parents said she ran away.""

But now that seemed impossible.

A seventeen-year-old girl leaving with someone.

A mother hiding financial secrets.

A daughter who knew too much.

Nothing fit anymore.

Emily became obsessed with finding answers.

I understood why.

Charlotte wasn't just a mystery.

She was a warning.

A version of Emily who existed before her.

One evening, Emily found something in an old family album.

A photograph.

Charlotte standing beside someone.

A man.

Not Richard.

Not anyone we recognized.

But Emily immediately knew.

"That's him.""

I looked at her.

"Who?""

"My mother mentioned him once.""

"When?""

"Years ago.""

Her face went pale.

"She said he was the reason Charlotte left.""

Daniel grabbed the photo.

"Who is he?""

Emily shook her head.

"I don't know.""

We searched the back of the picture.

There was a name written.

A name that none of us expected.

Andrew Hale.

The next day, we found him.

Not through the family.

Through records.

Andrew Hale was a former employee of the Mercer company.

He had worked closely with Victoria years ago.

Then suddenly disappeared.

No explanation.

No contact.

No trace.

Until now.

Because Natalie, the journalist, recognized the name.

"I know him.""

We looked at her.

"You do?""

She nodded.

"He contacted me six months ago.""

My stomach dropped.

"Why?""

She hesitated.

"He said if anything happened to him, I should investigate the Mercer family.""

The room went silent.

"Where is he now?""

Natalie looked uncomfortable.

"Nobody knows.""

Again.

Nobody knows.

That phrase was becoming a pattern.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

Too many questions.

Too many secrets.

Charlotte disappeared because she knew something.

Emily was controlled because Victoria feared losing another daughter.

Daniel was trapped because he learned silence from his father.

And now Andrew Hale was missing.

I looked at the documents spread across the table.

Then I noticed something.

A small note attached to one of the files.

A handwriting I didn't recognize.

Three words.

"She knows everything.""

I froze.

Because below those words was a date.

The date was from only two weeks ago.

Someone had been watching.

May you like

Someone knew we were searching.

And someone wanted us to know.
