Chapter 23: The Enemy Outside The Family

The name Marcus Vale changed everything.

Before that moment, the Mercer family's problems seemed like a closed system.

A mother.

A father.

Two children.

Years of control and silence.

But Marcus introduced something else.

A threat beyond the family walls.

A person who had no reason to protect the Mercer name.

And that made him dangerous.

Richard finally told us the truth.

Not everything at once.

That would have been impossible.

Richard had spent decades avoiding uncomfortable conversations.

But now there was nowhere left to hide.

"Marcus Vale was my father's partner.""

We sat around the table.

Everyone listening.

"Your grandfather trusted him.""

"What happened?"" Daniel asked.

Richard sighed.

"Marcus betrayed him.""

The story was complicated.

Too complicated.

But the simple version was this:

Marcus had discovered illegal activities connected to the family business.

Instead of reporting it, he used the information for leverage.

He threatened.

Demanded money.

Controlled decisions.

The same cycle.

Control.

Fear.

Silence.

I looked at Emily.

The pattern wasn't just inside the Mercer home.

It had followed them for generations.

"Why didn't anyone stop him?""

Richard looked ashamed.

"Because we were afraid.""

Again.

That word.

Fear had become the Mercer family's inheritance.

Natalie, the journalist, began investigating Marcus.

Within days, she discovered something disturbing.

Marcus Vale was not missing.

He had been living under another name.

And he was closer than anyone expected.

"Where?"" Daniel asked.

Natalie looked at the documents.

"Boston.""

The room went quiet.

"He's been here this entire time.""

Nobody spoke.

Because that meant someone had been watching.

Waiting.

Then Natalie found something else.

A connection.

Marcus wasn't just connected to the Mercer family's past.

He had been connected to their present.

A company he owned had recently invested in one of the charities Victoria managed.

I stared at the information.

"Victoria knew?""

Natalie shook her head.

"I don't think so.""

That surprised me.

Because for all her control, Victoria had missed something.

Someone had been operating around her.

And Victoria Mercer hated one thing more than losing control.

Being controlled.

The biggest shock came when Emily received a message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence:

"I know where Charlotte is.""

Emily immediately showed us.

Daniel stood.

"Call it.""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because whoever sent this wants something.""

He was right.

For once, we didn't react emotionally.

We thought.

The old Mercer family would have panicked.

The new one questioned.

Emily replied:

"Who are you?""

The response came five minutes later.

"Someone who failed her.""

We traced the number.

It belonged to a woman.

A woman named Grace Holloway.

Nobody knew her.

Until Richard saw the name.

His face changed.

"Grace?""

"Who is she?""

Richard looked sick.

"She worked for Marcus.""

The room froze.

Another connection.

Another secret.

We met Grace the next day.

She looked nothing like I expected.

I imagined someone dangerous.

Someone calculating.

Instead, I saw someone broken.

She immediately apologized.

"To all of you.""

Daniel frowned.

"For what?""

"For knowing.""

She looked at Emily.

"I knew what happened.""

Emily stepped forward.

"To Charlotte?""

Grace nodded.

"I knew she was alive.""

Everyone froze.

"Where is she?""

Grace looked at the ground.

"Safe.""

"Where?""

"I can't tell you.""

Daniel became angry.

"After everything?""

Grace looked at him.

"Because if Marcus knows Charlotte is found...""

She stopped.

"What?""

"He will come after her.""

Grace told us the truth.

Charlotte had spent years moving.

Changing locations.

Changing identities.

Not because she was hiding from her family.

Because she was hiding from Marcus.

"Why didn't she tell us?""

Grace looked at Emily.

"Because she believed your mother was the only person who could protect you.""

Emily looked confused.

"My mother?""

Grace nodded.

"Charlotte knew Victoria was controlling.""

"Then why trust her?""

"Because she also knew something else.""

"What?""

Grace's answer was quiet.

"Victoria would destroy the world before letting someone hurt her children.""

Nobody spoke.

Because it was true.

That was the contradiction of Victoria Mercer.

She could hurt people while believing she was protecting them.

That night, Victoria finally admitted something.

"I knew Marcus was still watching.""

I stared at her.

"For years?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't you tell anyone?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because I thought if I kept everyone close...""

She stopped.

"Nobody else would disappear.""

The sadness in that sentence was impossible to ignore.

But then Emily asked:

"And did it work?""

Victoria looked at her.

"No.""

A long silence.

"I lost all of you anyway.""

The next morning, another message arrived.

This time from Marcus.

Not to Emily.

To all of us.

A photograph was attached.

A woman standing outside a small house.

Older.

But recognizable.

Charlotte.

The message below was short.

"She was never yours to find.""

May you like

Then another message appeared.

"Now she is mine to take back.""
