Chapter 22: The Truth Andrew Never Told Us
The room remained silent long after Emily finished reading the letter.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
It was as if the entire Mercer family was waiting for someone else to react first.
That had always been their pattern.
Someone else would speak.
Someone else would decide.
Someone else would carry the weight.
But this time, nobody wanted to.
Because the person who had brought them answers had also become the newest question.
Andrew Hale.
The man who helped Charlotte disappear.
The man Charlotte trusted enough to help her escape.
The man who claimed he was protecting her.
And now the man Charlotte warned us about.
I looked at Andrew.
His face had changed.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
A slight tension around his eyes.
A hesitation before he spoke.
A crack in the confidence he had carried since walking through the door.
"You knew about the letter?""
Daniel's voice was cold.
Andrew looked at him.
"No.""
"Then why did Charlotte warn us about you?""
A long pause.
Andrew didn't answer.
That was the answer.
Daniel stood.
"You brought us here believing you were helping.""
"I was.""
"Then explain.""
Andrew looked exhausted.
"Because Charlotte was afraid.""
"Of you?""
"No.""
He looked at Victoria.
"Of everyone.""
Andrew asked us to sit.
Nobody trusted him.
But everyone listened.
Because after years of secrets, even a suspicious truth was better than another lie.
"I met Charlotte when I worked for your family," Andrew said.
He looked at Emily.
"She was seventeen.""
"How old were you?""
"Twenty-six.""
The answer made Daniel tense.
"You were older.""
"Yes.""
"How did you know her?""
Andrew didn't avoid the question.
"I worked in the financial department. I handled some of the records she later discovered.""
The documents.
The money.
The secret.
"Charlotte was curious," Andrew continued.
"She asked questions. A lot of questions.""
A small smile appeared.
"She reminded me of Emily.""
Emily looked down.
"She wasn't afraid to challenge people.""
I thought about that.
The Mercer daughters were similar.
Both questioned.
Both fought.
Both refused to completely disappear.
And both paid a price for it.
"One night, Charlotte found documents she wasn't supposed to see.""
"What documents?"" Daniel asked.
Andrew looked uncomfortable.
"The full extent of your family's financial problems.""
Richard lowered his head.
"I knew.""
Everyone looked at him.
"You knew?""
Richard nodded.
"But not everything.""
Andrew continued.
"Charlotte discovered that Victoria had been moving money around for years.""
"I know that part," Emily said.
"No.""
Andrew shook his head.
"You don't know the worst part.""
The room became still.
"What worst part?""
Andrew looked at Victoria.
"She wasn't only hiding the money.""
Victoria's expression changed.
"What are you saying?""
"She was hiding the reason.""
Andrew explained.
The missing money wasn't simply used to save the family.
It was used to cover something else.
A payment.
A settlement.
Something Victoria had spent years trying to erase.
"With who?"" Daniel asked.
Andrew looked at him.
"Your grandfather.""
Richard froze.
"My father?""
Andrew nodded.
"The man who created the original financial disaster.""
That wasn't surprising.
What surprised us was what came next.
"Your grandfather wasn't just in debt.""
Andrew placed a document on the table.
"He was being threatened.""
Nobody touched it.
"Threatened by who?""
Andrew looked at Victoria.
"Someone who knew what he had done.""
Victoria whispered:
"Stop.""
For the first time, Andrew looked uncomfortable.
"I promised Charlotte I would tell the truth.""
Victoria's expression changed.
"Charlotte was a child.""
"No.""
Andrew shook his head.
"She was the bravest person in that house.""
The document revealed something none of us expected.
Years before Charlotte disappeared, Victoria's father had been involved in a serious business dispute.
The kind of dispute that didn't disappear with money.
The kind that created enemies.
And when Victoria inherited the problem, she tried to erase every trace.
Including the people connected to it.
"Charlotte found evidence," Andrew said.
"Evidence of what?""
"That someone had been following the family.""
I felt cold.
"Following?""
Andrew nodded.
"Watching.""
The same feeling I had when I found the note.
The same feeling when someone seemed to know we were investigating.
This wasn't just a family secret.
Someone else was involved.
"Why didn't Charlotte come back?""
Emily asked.
Andrew looked at her.
"Because she learned the truth.""
"What truth?""
"That leaving the Mercer family wasn't enough.""
The answer confused me.
"Why?""
"Because the person who wanted her silent wasn't inside the house.""
Everyone froze.
Victoria stared at him.
"What are you saying?""
Andrew looked around the room.
"Someone outside this family wanted Charlotte gone.""
That night, we searched through every document Andrew had.
Every letter.
Every photograph.
Every record.
And we found something strange.
A name appeared repeatedly.
Marcus Vale.
Nobody recognized it.
Except Richard.
The moment he saw the name, his face changed.
"You know him.""
Richard didn't answer.
"Richard.""
He finally spoke.
"He was my father's business partner.""
"And?""
Richard looked terrified.
"And he was the reason my father lost everything.""
The room went silent.
"Where is he now?""
Richard shook his head.
"I don't know.""
But his expression said something else.
He did know.
Or at least...
He knew enough.
Later that night, I found Victoria alone.
Not because I wanted to confront her.
Because I needed to understand.
"Did you know about Marcus?""
She didn't pretend.
"Yes.""
"Did Charlotte know?""
Victoria nodded.
"Yes.""
"Was that why she disappeared?""
Victoria looked at me.
And for once, there was no manipulation in her eyes.
Only fear.
"No.""
I waited.
"That was why I let her.""
I froze.
"What?""
Victoria looked away.
"I thought if she left, she would be safe.""
The words shocked me.
"You let her disappear?""
"I helped her.""
My heart raced.
"Then why tell everyone she ran away?""
Victoria's voice broke.
"Because I knew if people searched for her...""
She stopped.
"Someone else would find her.""
The room went silent.
And suddenly, the story changed again.
Victoria hadn't only been hiding a daughter.
She had been hiding a threat.
But the question remained:
May you like
Was she protecting Charlotte?
Or protecting herself?
