Chapter 11: The Family Meeting

The Mercer family called it a dinner.

But I knew better.

It was an intervention.

For me.

The invitation came from Victoria.

"Join us Friday evening. We need to clear the air.""

Those words sounded polite.

Almost caring.

But I had learned something about Victoria Mercer.

Every sentence had a purpose.

Every smile had a reason.

I showed up anyway.

Because I was done being afraid.

The entire family was there.

Victoria.

Richard.

Daniel.

Emily.

The dining room looked exactly as it had the first night.

Perfect.

Beautiful.

Cold.

I sat beside Daniel.

Emily sat across from me.

She wouldn't look at anyone.

That bothered me.

Because she was the person this conversation was supposedly about.

Yet she looked like the least important person in the room.

Victoria poured wine.

"Claire, I want to apologize.""

I almost laughed.

An apology from Victoria was the last thing I expected.

"For what?""

"For the misunderstanding.""

There it was.

Not an apology.

A correction.

"You think this is a misunderstanding?""

She smiled.

"I think you have been given incomplete information.""

"By who?""

She looked toward Emily.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Emily's hands tightened.

"Emily has always struggled with perception.""

I looked at her.

"That's a very convenient phrase.""

Victoria smiled.

"You see? This is exactly what concerns me.""

"What concerns you?""

"Your judgment.""

The room went silent.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"I don't understand.""

Victoria folded her hands.

"You are preparing to marry my son.""

"Yes.""

"And we want what is best for you.""

I almost couldn't believe it.

"You think protecting me means telling me not to trust Emily?""

"No.""

She looked at me.

"I think protecting you means helping you understand that Emily is unwell.""

Emily finally spoke.

"Stop.""

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice shook.

But she continued.

"Please stop.""

It was the first time I had heard her challenge her mother.

Victoria's expression changed.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

"Emily.""

"Don't.""

Emily looked at her.

"You don't get to do this anymore.""

The room became still.

For the first time, Victoria looked surprised.

"You don't know what you're saying.""

"No.""

Emily's voice grew stronger.

"I know exactly what I'm saying.""

Richard stood.

"Enough.""

The single word immediately silenced everyone.

And I noticed.

Even Victoria listened.

That was interesting.

"You are embarrassing this family," Richard said.

Emily looked at him.

"I've spent my entire life trying not to.""

Something shifted.

Even Daniel looked away.

Because everyone knew she was right.

Then Victoria placed something on the table.

A folder.

"I didn't want to do this.""

Emily went pale.

"What is that?""

Victoria looked at me.

"Since Claire is involved, she deserves the truth.""

My stomach tightened.

"What truth?""

Victoria opened the folder.

Inside were medical records.

"Emily has a history of instability.""

I looked at the documents.

But something felt wrong.

The dates.

The wording.

The information.

Something didn't match.

"These are old.""

Victoria nodded.

"Exactly.""

"So why show me?""

"Because patterns matter.""

I looked at Emily.

She looked terrified.

Not because the records existed.

Because she knew what was coming.

Victoria continued.

"Emily has always created conflict.""

"That's not what these say.""

Victoria smiled.

"You aren't a doctor.""

"No.""

I closed the folder.

"But I can read.""

The room went quiet.

For the first time, Victoria seemed irritated.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Mom.""

Everyone turned.

His voice was low.

"Stop.""

I looked at him.

Victoria stared at her son.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me.""

The tension in the room changed.

Daniel had finally challenged her.

And everyone felt it.

"Daniel," Richard warned.

"No.""

He looked at his father.

"I'm done.""

Victoria's face became cold.

"You don't know what you're doing.""

Daniel looked at Emily.

Then back at his mother.

"Actually, I do.""

The silence afterward was terrifying.

Because I knew something important had happened.

Daniel wasn't just admitting the truth to me anymore.

He was admitting it to them.

After dinner, Emily and I left together.

Outside, she stopped.

"I didn't expect that.""

"Neither did I.""

She looked back at the house.

"He's never done that before.""

"Your brother?""

She nodded.

"He always apologized afterward.""

My heart sank.

"What do you mean?""

Emily looked at me.

"Every time Daniel stood up to my mother, he eventually came back and said he was sorry.""

"Why?""

"Because she always made him choose.""

I stared at the mansion.

The beautiful house.

The perfect family.

The endless secrets.

Then Emily said something that changed everything.

"Claire.""

I looked at her.

"Tonight wasn't about convincing you.""

"Then what was it about?""

May you like

She whispered:

"My mother was testing how much Daniel still belonged to her.""
