Chapter 18: The Secret Hidden Before Emily Was Born

The journalist's name was Natalie Harper.

She worked for a major Boston newspaper.

When she first contacted me, I assumed she wanted gossip.

A wealthy family.

A scandal.

A dramatic story.

But after meeting her, I realized something.

She wasn't chasing headlines.

She was chasing the truth.

"I need you to understand something.""

Natalie placed a folder on the table.

"This isn't about destroying the Mercer family.""

I looked at the documents.

"Then what is it about?""

"Finding out how long this has been happening.""

That sentence made me nervous.

"How long?""

She looked at me.

"Longer than Emily.""

The first document was old.

Very old.

Before Daniel was born.

Before Emily.

It was a letter from a former employee of the Mercer family.

The employee claimed Victoria had a pattern.

Not just with her children.

With everyone.

Employees.

Friends.

Business partners.

Anyone close enough.

"She has always controlled people through fear," Natalie explained.

I looked at the papers.

"But why investigate now?""

"Because someone came forward.""

"Who?""

Natalie hesitated.

"Someone from Victoria's past.""

The person was named Eleanor.

Victoria's childhood friend.

They had grown up together.

Eleanor agreed to meet.

When she arrived, I immediately understood why Natalie believed her.

She wasn't angry.

She wasn't trying to get revenge.

She looked tired.

Like someone who had carried a secret too long.

"I knew Victoria before she became Victoria Mercer.""

"What was she like?""

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"Brilliant.""

That surprised me.

"Brilliant?""

"Yes.""

She looked down.

"That's what people forget.""

I listened.

"Victoria wasn't born cruel.""

The sentence reminded me of our conversation.

"My mother was like me.""

Eleanor continued.

"She was terrified of losing everything.""

"What happened?""

"Her father lost their family business.""

I froze.

"Because of what?""

"Bad decisions.""

The same pattern.

"After that, Victoria became obsessed with control.""

Eleanor looked at me.

"She promised herself nobody would ever have power over her again.""

I understood.

Fear became control.

Control became damage.

Damage became a cycle.

But then Eleanor said something that changed everything.

"Emily wasn't Victoria's first child.""

I froze.

"What?""

She looked uncomfortable.

"Victoria had a daughter before Daniel.""

The world seemed to stop.

"What happened to her?""

Eleanor looked away.

"She died.""

"When?""

"Years ago.""

"How?""

Silence.

Then:

"Everyone said it was an accident.""

Everyone said.

Those words immediately bothered me.

"Do you believe that?""

Eleanor didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

I brought this information to Daniel.

He was silent for a long time.

"I never knew.""

"Your mother never told you?""

He shook his head.

"My parents said she was a family tragedy.""

"Do you know her name?""

Daniel looked at me.

"No.""

The sadness in his face was heartbreaking.

A person could live in a family their entire life and still not know the truth about it.

Emily reacted differently.

When I told her, she became completely still.

Then she whispered:

"I think I've heard that name.""

"What name?""

"My sister.""

I stared at her.

"You knew?""

"Not exactly.""

She explained that when she was younger, she found an old photograph hidden in a drawer.

A girl.

A teenager.

Standing beside Victoria.

"Who was she?"" Emily had asked.

Victoria had taken the photograph away.

She said:

"Someone who couldn't be saved.""

Those words stayed with Emily for years.

Someone who couldn't be saved.

Now she wondered if that was the fate Victoria had always feared for her.

We returned to the Mercer mansion together.

Not to confront Victoria.

To ask questions.

For once, everyone sat in the same room.

Victoria.

Richard.

Daniel.

Emily.

And me.

Emily looked at her mother.

"Who was my sister?""

Victoria froze.

I had never seen her lose control before.

Not even for a second.

But now she did.

Her hand shook.

"Who told you?""

Emily's face changed.

Because the answer was obvious.

It was true.

"My sister existed.""

Victoria closed her eyes.

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then she whispered:

"Her name was Charlotte.""

The room became silent.

"What happened to her?"" Emily asked.

Victoria looked older than I had ever seen her.

"She was like you.""

My heart stopped.

"What does that mean?""

Victoria looked at Emily.

"She wanted to leave.""

Nobody moved.

"She thought she could escape.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Did she?""

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

And then she said the sentence that changed everything.

"No.""

The room went completely silent.

"She didn't escape.""

Emily whispered:

"What happened?""

Victoria looked down.

And for the first time in my life, I saw genuine fear on her face.

Not fear of losing control.

Fear of the truth.

"Charlotte disappeared.""

And suddenly, Emily's story was no longer just about one daughter trapped by a controlling mother.

May you like

It was about a family secret that had been buried for decades.

And nobody knew how deep it went.
