Chapter 28: The Last Enemy Was Never Gone

For decades, the Mercer family believed their greatest enemy was each other.

Victoria believed Richard's weakness had damaged the family.

Richard believed Victoria's control had destroyed it.

Daniel believed he had failed Emily.

Emily believed she was trapped because nobody believed her.

Charlotte believed she had to disappear to survive.

Everyone carried their own version of the truth.

But now they finally understood something.

The real danger had been hiding outside the family.

Watching.

Waiting.

Manipulating every weakness.

Victor Hale.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man who had started everything.

After the phone call, nobody slept.

Not because they were afraid.

Because they were finally awake.

The old Mercer family would have separated.

Victoria would have made a plan alone.

Richard would have stayed silent.

Daniel would have tried to fix everything himself.

Emily would have apologized for causing trouble.

Charlotte would have disappeared.

But that family no longer existed.

They sat around the same table.

Everyone spoke.

Everyone listened.

It was strange.

Almost uncomfortable.

But it was real.

"What does he want?"" Daniel asked.

Andrew answered.

"The same thing he wanted thirty years ago.""

"The documents?""

Andrew nodded.

"The evidence.""

Charlotte looked at him.

"But why now?""

Nobody answered.

Until Natalie did.

"Because the public investigation changed everything.""

She placed her laptop on the table.

"Victor spent decades controlling information. He stayed hidden because nobody knew he existed.""

She looked at everyone.

"Now people are asking questions.""

"So he wants to erase the evidence.""

"Exactly.""

The next morning, Natalie uncovered something.

Victor Hale had not been hiding.

He had been rebuilding.

Under different names.

Different companies.

Different identities.

But the same pattern.

Investment firms.

Private foundations.

Business partnerships.

All connected.

"He created a network," Natalie explained.

"Over thirty years?""

She nodded.

"Patient people are often the most dangerous.""

That sentence stayed with me.

Because Victor's greatest weapon wasn't money.

It was time.

Then came the second discovery.

Victor wasn't only connected to the Mercer family.

He was connected to the disappearance of other people.

People who had tried to expose him.

Business owners.

Employees.

Witnesses.

All disappeared from public life.

Not always physically.

Sometimes their careers vanished.

Their reputations disappeared.

Their voices were destroyed.

"He did this to everyone," Daniel said.

Natalie nodded.

"The Mercers were just his biggest target.""

That afternoon, Victoria asked to speak with Charlotte.

Alone.

Nobody knew what would happen.

Their relationship was complicated.

A mother who caused pain.

A daughter who ran away.

Two people who loved each other but spent years hurting each other.

I waited outside with Emily.

After almost an hour, the door opened.

Charlotte walked out first.

Her eyes were red.

Emily immediately stood.

"What happened?""

Charlotte looked at her sister.

"My mother apologized.""

Emily was quiet.

"And?""

Charlotte took a breath.

"I believed her.""

That surprised everyone.

"Why?""

Charlotte looked toward the room.

"Because for the first time, she didn't apologize to get something from me.""

She paused.

"She apologized because she finally understood.""

Later, Victoria joined us.

She looked different.

Not younger.

Not happier.

Just lighter.

"I spent my whole life fighting ghosts.""

Nobody spoke.

"I thought if I controlled every detail, I could prevent another loss.""

She looked at Charlotte.

"But I created one.""

The honesty was painful.

Then she turned to Emily.

"I did the same thing to you.""

Emily looked emotional.

For years, she had waited for those words.

Not excuses.

Not explanations.

An acknowledgment.

"I know," Emily whispered.

Victoria nodded.

"I am sorry.""

This time, nobody interrupted.

Because sometimes the most important words are the simplest ones.

The plan against Victor was dangerous.

We couldn't confront him directly.

People like Victor survived because they prepared.

They always had an exit.

So Natalie suggested something different.

"We let him think he won.""

Everyone looked at her.

"How?""

"By giving him what he wants.""

Nobody liked the idea.

"What does he want?""

Charlotte answered.

"The original documents.""

The evidence that could destroy him.

The next week became a carefully planned operation.

A fake meeting.

A fake exchange.

A way to expose Victor without giving him control.

The Mercer family had spent decades hiding.

Now they were finally working together.

And somehow, that was their greatest advantage.

Victor expected broken people.

He did not expect a family that had healed enough to fight.

The meeting took place in an abandoned office building.

Victor arrived alone.

Older than everyone expected.

But still intimidating.

He looked exactly like the kind of man who believed the world belonged to him.

When he saw Charlotte, he smiled.

"I knew you would come.""

Charlotte stood tall.

"I knew you would find me.""

Victor smiled.

"You always were intelligent.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You threatened my sister.""

Victor looked at him.

"No.""

He smiled.

"I motivated her.""

The arrogance was unbelievable.

Emily looked at him.

"You ruined our family.""

Victor tilted his head.

"No.""

He looked around.

"Your family ruined itself.""

And that was his greatest belief.

He never saw himself as the villain.

Only the person taking advantage of other people's weaknesses.

Then Victor said something that changed everything.

"I didn't destroy the Mercer family.""

He looked at Victoria.

"I showed everyone who they really were.""

Victoria didn't respond.

Because there was some truth in it.

The family had failed.

They had lied.

They had hidden.

But that did not make Victor innocent.

"You used our mistakes," Richard said.

Victor smiled.

"Of course.""

Then he looked at Charlotte.

"And you were the only one who understood that.""

Charlotte frowned.

"What?""

Victor's expression changed.

"You thought you escaped.""

A pause.

"But you were helping me.""

Everyone froze.

Charlotte went pale.

"No.""

Victor smiled.

"You found the documents because I wanted you to.""

The room went silent.

And suddenly, the final mystery became clear.

Charlotte's disappearance.

The secrets.

The evidence.

Everything.

Victor had been planning this for decades.

But Victor made one mistake.

He talked too much.

Because Natalie was recording everything.

The moment he realized, his expression changed.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

"You think this ends me?""

Natalie smiled.

"No.""

She held up the device.

"But it starts.""

May you like

And for the first time in thirty years...

Victor Hale had nowhere left to hide.
