Chapter 27: The Person Behind The Final Lie

The photograph was taken at night.

The person was standing across the street.

Partially hidden.

But the face was visible enough.

Enough to recognize.

Enough to make everyone afraid.

Because the person watching Emily was not Marcus Vale.

It was someone else.

Someone we thought was gone.

Someone connected to the beginning of everything.

Charlotte stared at the picture.

"No.""

The word escaped before she could stop it.

I looked at her.

"Who is it?""

She didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Charlotte.""

She shook her head.

"This isn't possible.""

That frightened me more than anything.

Because Charlotte had faced years of fear.

She had survived hiding.

She had survived losing her family.

But this?

This broke her.

"Who is it?""

Finally, she whispered:

"My grandfather.""

Everyone went silent.

Richard immediately stood.

"That's impossible.""

Charlotte looked at him.

"You said he was dead.""

Richard nodded.

"He is.""

"Then explain that.""

Nobody could.

Richard searched through old records.

Death certificates.

News articles.

Family documents.

Everything confirmed the same thing.

Marcus Vale.

Charlotte's grandfather's former partner.

Richard's father.

All connected.

But not alive.

Or so they believed.

"Someone is pretending to be him," Daniel said.

Charlotte shook her head.

"No.""

Everyone looked at her.

"How do you know?""

She looked terrified.

"Because he used to say something.""

"What?""

She stared at the message.

"You should have stayed gone.""

A pause.

"He said that the night I left.""

The room became silent.

Charlotte explained.

The night she disappeared, she wasn't only escaping Victoria.

She was escaping someone else.

Someone who had come to the house.

Someone who knew about the documents.

Someone who wanted the truth buried.

"I thought it was Marcus.""

"Wasn't it?""

Charlotte shook her head.

"No.""

The realization hit everyone.

Marcus was only a piece of the puzzle.

Someone else had been moving behind him.

Natalie investigated immediately.

Within hours, she found something disturbing.

The person in the photo had been seen before.

Not recently.

Years ago.

In old company records.

A man using a different name.

But the same face.

"The impossible man.""

I frowned.

"What?""

Natalie looked serious.

"Someone who officially doesn't exist.""

She placed the records down.

"Someone who has been manipulating the Mercer family for decades.""

The name was Victor Hale.

Andrew Hale's father.

Everyone looked at Andrew.

He went pale.

"My father?""

Andrew had never mentioned him.

"Why would your father do this?""

Andrew sat down slowly.

"Because he believed the Mercer family destroyed him.""

"What happened?""

Andrew looked broken.

"My father was the original partner before Marcus.""

Richard stared.

"That's impossible.""

Andrew shook his head.

"No.""

His voice was quiet.

"It's the truth.""

Another secret.

Another hidden connection.

The Mercer fortune.

The financial problems.

Marcus.

Charlotte's disappearance.

Everything traced back further.

Andrew admitted something.

He had not helped Charlotte randomly.

He was sent.

By his father.

At first, he was supposed to find the documents.

Recover the evidence.

Destroy it.

But then he met Charlotte.

And everything changed.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

Charlotte looked at him.

Andrew looked ashamed.

"Because I was afraid.""

The word sounded familiar.

Everyone was trapped by fear.

Even Andrew.

"I thought if I disappeared, my father would stop looking.""

"Did he?""

Andrew looked at the photograph.

"No.""

That night, the family gathered again.

But this time, there was no illusion.

No pretending.

They weren't fighting one enemy.

They were fighting decades of secrets.

Emily looked around the room.

"So what now?""

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria spoke.

"We stop running.""

Everyone looked at her.

It was the strongest sentence she had said in months.

"We stop hiding.""

Richard nodded.

For once, they agreed.

No more protecting the name.

No more protecting the image.

No more protecting people from the truth.

The next morning, Charlotte received a call.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Everyone watched.

A man's voice spoke.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Charlotte.""

Her face went white.

Because she recognized him.

"Grandfather.""

The room froze.

The voice laughed softly.

"I knew you would come back eventually.""

Charlotte couldn't speak.

Then he said:

"Now I can finish what I started.""

The call ended.

And for the first time in decades...

May you like

The Mercer family knew the truth.

The person they had been running from had finally come back.
