Chapter 8: The Woman in the Security Footage
"That's impossible.""
Margaret's voice was barely audible.
Daniel stepped between her and Detective Carter.
"My mother hasn't been anywhere near that warehouse.""
Carter held up one hand.
"We're not accusing her of anything. We need to establish whether the footage is authentic.""
Christopher looked at the photograph on the officer's tablet.
"Can we see it?""
The detective nodded.
The recording showed a woman wearing a beige coat entering the warehouse at 10:06 a.m.
Her silver hair was pinned in a familiar style.
Her height and build appeared almost identical to Margaret's.
Daniel watched it twice.
Then he noticed something.
"Stop.""
The officer paused the footage.
"Look at her right hand.""
The woman was carrying a black handbag.
Margaret never carried a black handbag.
She always used a faded brown leather purse Daniel had bought her for her sixty-fifth birthday.
"That's not my mother," he said.
Carter leaned closer.
"You're certain?""
"Absolutely.""
Margaret looked at the screen.
"She walks like me.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Mom?""
Margaret shook her head.
"I've never been inside that building.""
Helen examined the footage.
"Can we get a better resolution?""
The officer nodded.
"We're retrieving the original recording.""
Christopher pointed toward the woman's left wrist.
"Zoom in there.""
The image sharpened slightly.
A silver bracelet was visible.
Margaret looked down at her own wrist.
She wore no bracelet.
"That's not mine," she whispered.
Helen exhaled.
"Someone deliberately dressed to resemble you.""
Carter's expression hardened.
"Then someone is trying to implicate Mrs. Bennett.""
Daniel looked toward the warehouse.
"Charlotte was there, wasn't she?""
Carter nodded.
"We found traces of blood and a broken phone. The forensic team is processing everything.""
"Then why would someone make it look like my mother entered the building?""
"To connect her to whatever happened inside.""
Daniel's phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of the warehouse interior.
In the center of the picture was a wooden chair.
Beside it sat a small glass of water and a folded piece of paper.
Daniel opened the attachment.
The message beneath it read:
*Your mother knows where the second ledger is. Ask her before someone else does.*
He turned toward Margaret.
She was staring at the screen.
"Mom, what second ledger?""
Margaret's eyes filled.
"I don't know.""
Daniel took her hand.
"Please. Whatever you remember, tell us.""
She shook her head.
"I told you everything about your father.""
"Then why would someone say you know where the ledger is?""
Margaret looked toward Helen.
Then she whispered, "Because there was another person in the car that night.""
Daniel went completely still.
"What person?""
"Your father wasn't alone when he left the house.""
Helen pulled out her notebook.
"Who was with him?""
Margaret swallowed.
"Edward Whitmore's daughter.""
"Charlotte?""
Margaret nodded.
"She was young, perhaps twelve or thirteen. Your father had been helping her secretly after Edward died.""
Daniel sat down.
"Why was she there?""
"She had discovered that Richard was selling her father's property. Your father promised to help her find the original documents.""
Christopher frowned.
"That was twenty years ago. Charlotte would have been a child.""
"Yes.""
Margaret's voice cracked.
"Your father told me to hide her in the back seat of our car while he spoke with someone outside. He said if anything happened, I was to take her somewhere safe.""
Daniel stared.
"Did something happen?""
Margaret closed her eyes.
"I heard the crash. I ran outside. Your father's car had been pushed off the road. Charlotte was still inside, crying.""
"Was she injured?""
"She had a cut on her forehead. I took her home and called an ambulance for your father. But before the ambulance arrived, Richard appeared.""
Helen leaned forward.
"What did he do?""
"He took Charlotte.""
Daniel stood.
"He took a child from the accident scene?""
Margaret nodded.
"He said she belonged with her family. He told me the police would blame me if they discovered I'd hidden her.""
Christopher looked horrified.
"Did you ever see Charlotte again?""
Margaret shook her head.
"Not until today.""
Daniel felt a cold anger spreading through his chest.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Richard threatened to tell the police I had kidnapped her. I had no proof of what happened, and I was afraid I'd lose you.""
Helen placed a reassuring hand on Margaret's shoulder.
"Mrs. Bennett, you were threatened and intimidated. We need to document everything now.""
Margaret nodded weakly.
Then she reached into her handbag.
"I kept something.""
She removed a small photograph.
It showed James Bennett standing beside a young girl with dark hair.
On the back, he had written:
For Daniel, so he never forgets that courage sometimes means protecting someone who cannot protect themselves.
Daniel turned the photograph over.
He recognized the girl.
It was Charlotte.
But there was something else in the image.
A second adult stood behind them.
A woman wearing a dark green coat.
Margaret touched the photograph.
"That's Evelyn Whitmore.""
"Edward's mother?""
"Yes. She was the one who helped your father protect Charlotte.""
Helen examined the photograph.
"Do you know where she lived?""
Margaret nodded.
"She owned an old estate outside the city. After Edward died, she moved there and rarely appeared in public.""
"Is the property still in the family?""
"I don't know.""
Christopher searched the address.
A property listing appeared.
The estate had been sold eighteen years earlier to a private charitable foundation.
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
"Why did Dad write this message?""
Margaret hesitated.
"Because he believed Charlotte was the key to exposing Richard.""
Carter's radio interrupted them.
"Detective, we have an update.""
Carter listened.
His face tightened.
"What do you mean the blood doesn't match?""
A pause.
Then he turned toward Daniel.
"The blood found at the warehouse belongs to a man, not a woman.""
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
"Who?""
"We're waiting for confirmation.""
Carter's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and slowly lowered it.
"We have a match.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who is it?""
Carter looked directly at Margaret.
"The blood belongs to Martin Graves.""
Helen's eyes widened.
Christopher whispered, "The lawyer?""
Carter nodded.
"And we've just received a report that his office was broken into last night.""
Daniel frowned.
"Was anything stolen?""
"One item.""
Carter showed them a photograph.
It was a framed picture of James Bennett, taken shortly before his death.
The glass had been smashed.
The photograph itself was missing.
On the empty frame, someone had written:
*THE SECOND LEDGER IS WITH THE WOMAN WHO NEVER LEFT.*
Margaret stared at the words.
May you like
Then she slowly whispered:
"Evelyn.""
