Chapter 1: The Wedding That Ended Before It Began

The bride slapped her future mother-in-law before the elderly woman could even finish offering her a bouquet of roses.

And two hundred wedding guests watched the groom make a decision that would destroy the most expensive day of his life—and expose the woman he had almost married.

The slap echoed through the ballroom.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Margaret Bennett stood beneath the golden chandeliers, one hand pressed against her burning cheek, the other clutching a bouquet of red roses. Her silver hair had begun to loosen from its carefully pinned arrangement.

A single rose lay on the marble floor.

Lauren Whitmore stared at the older woman as if she had just committed an unforgivable crime.

"Look what you've done!"" Lauren snapped.

"Do you have any idea how much this dress costs?""

Margaret blinked.

"I didn't touch your dress, dear. I was only trying to give you—"

"Don't call me dear!""

Lauren lifted the edge of her ivory gown, inspecting it for imaginary stains.

"Those flowers are dripping something. You could have ruined everything!""

Margaret looked down at the bouquet.

The roses were perfectly clean.

She had spent nearly an hour arranging them that morning, removing every damaged leaf and wrapping their stems in white ribbon.

She had even tied a tiny blue thread around the bouquet because Daniel had once told her that blue was his favorite color when he was a little boy.

"I picked them from my garden," Margaret whispered.

Lauren rolled her eyes.

"Then you should have left them in your garden.""

A woman near the front table covered her mouth.

Another guest quietly lowered his champagne glass.

Nobody knew what to say.

Margaret tried to bend down for the fallen rose, but her knees trembled.

Before she could reach it, a man's voice cut through the ballroom.

"Mom?""

Daniel Bennett was standing near the entrance to the reception area.

He had been discussing the wedding schedule with the venue manager when the slap happened. He had heard the sharp crack and turned just in time to see his mother stumble backward.

Now he hurried through the crowd.

"Mom, what happened?""

Margaret immediately tried to smile.

"Nothing, sweetheart. I just lost my balance.""

Daniel looked at her cheek.

A red handprint was already appearing beneath her eye.

His expression changed.

"Who hit you?""

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"Please don't make a scene. Everyone is watching.""

Daniel slowly turned toward Lauren.

"Did you hit my mother?""

Lauren folded her arms.

"She came too close to me with those filthy flowers.""

"Those are roses.""

"They were practically touching my dress!""

"Then you could have stepped backward.""

Lauren's eyes widened.

"Excuse me?""

Daniel looked at his mother again.

"Mom, did she hit you?""

Margaret's lips trembled.

She didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Lauren stepped closer, lowering her voice.

"Daniel, don't do this. We've spent fourteen months planning this wedding. My parents flew people in from three states. The venue cost more than some people's houses.""

Daniel stared at her.

"My mother was bringing you flowers.""

"And I didn't ask her to!""

"She wanted to welcome you into our family.""

Lauren laughed bitterly.

"Well, she should have learned how to behave around people first.""

That was when Daniel finally looked at the entire room.

He saw the guests avoiding his eyes.

He saw his best man, Christopher, standing motionless beside the champagne fountain.

He saw the photographer lowering his camera.

And he saw a young waitress quietly picking up the rose Lauren had stepped on.

Daniel crouched, retrieved the crushed flower, and placed it carefully back into his mother's bouquet.

Then he took her hand.

"Come with me, Mom.""

Margaret shook her head.

"Daniel, please. You have a wedding to finish.""

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he turned toward the microphone.

Lauren followed him.

"Daniel, what are you doing?""

He climbed the small platform beside the wedding arch.

The officiant stepped aside.

Daniel picked up the microphone.

The speakers hummed.

"Everyone, I'd like your attention.""

Lauren forced a nervous smile toward the guests.

"He's just upset. We'll be right back.""

Daniel slipped the wedding ring from his finger.

He placed it on the table beside the microphone.

"This wedding is canceled.""

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

Lauren went completely still.

"What?""

Daniel didn't look at her.

"I said the wedding is canceled.""

"You cannot be serious!""

"I have never been more serious in my life.""

Lauren rushed toward him.

"You can't embarrass me like this!""

Daniel finally faced her.

"You struck an elderly woman in front of two hundred people because she brought you flowers. That woman raised me alone. She worked double shifts, sold her jewelry, and skipped meals so I could have opportunities you now take for granted.""

"That's not my problem!""

The words escaped Lauren before she could stop them.

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time, she seemed to understand what she had just said.

His mother gently touched his arm.

"Son, let's go home.""

Daniel nodded.

He walked down the platform and wrapped his arm around Margaret's shoulders.

But Lauren wasn't finished.

She grabbed his sleeve.

"Daniel, think carefully. My father invested in your company. Your future depends on this marriage.""

Daniel stopped.

Slowly, he looked down at her hand.

"Take your hand off me.""

Lauren released him.

"My father won't forgive this.""

Daniel gave a humorless smile.

"Then perhaps your father should have taught you how to treat people.""

He guided his mother toward the exit.

But just before they reached the doors, Christopher, Daniel's best friend and business partner, hurried after them.

"Daniel, wait.""

Daniel turned.

Christopher looked pale.

"There's something you need to know about the Whitmores.""

"What?""

Christopher glanced toward Lauren.

She was standing beneath the wedding arch, surrounded by guests who suddenly seemed afraid to approach her.

Christopher lowered his voice.

"Your mother wasn't the only person Lauren planned to humiliate today.""

He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small black envelope.

"I found this in the bridal suite.""

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Margaret.

It had been taken three days earlier, outside her modest house.

On the back, someone had written six words:

*Make sure the old woman stays away.*

Daniel looked up.

"Who wrote this?""

Christopher swallowed.

"That's not the worst part.""

He turned the photograph over and pointed to a small printed note hidden beneath it.

"Your mother was being watched long before today.""

May you like

And suddenly, Daniel realized the slap might not have been an accident of temper.

It might have been part of something much bigger.
