Chapter 15: The Price of Protecting a Family

By midnight, the Whitmore Holdings building was surrounded by police vehicles.

Employees had been evacuated.

Firefighters were checking the ventilation system.

And the original recording of James Bennett's final conversation had disappeared.

Daniel stood in the lobby, staring at the empty security desk.

Christopher approached.

"Sarah is upstairs with Helen.""

"Did they find the backup?""

"Yes. The archive server automatically copied the audio file before the power failure.""

Daniel turned.

"So we still have it?""

Christopher nodded.

"Most of it. But the original recording contains additional material that wasn't transferred.""

Daniel exhaled.

"At least we have enough to prove Richard planned something.""

"Maybe. But Helen says we need the missing section to establish exactly what happened after your father confronted him.""

Daniel looked toward the elevators.

Sarah emerged carrying a small backpack.

Her face was pale.

"Where are you going?"" he asked.

"To get Emily.""

"Not alone.""

Sarah shook her head.

"Daniel, please. She's been waiting for me.""

Helen followed her.

"Detective Carter has obtained emergency authority to secure the property where Emily is staying. Officers are already on their way.""

Sarah's eyes filled.

"Will I be allowed to see her?""

Helen nodded.

"If the guardianship order is challenged with evidence of coercion and threats, the court can authorize protective arrangements. We'll make the necessary applications tonight.""

Sarah looked at Daniel.

"I don't know how to thank you.""

He gave a small smile.

"You can start by introducing me to my niece.""

For the first time that night, Sarah smiled back.

But the moment didn't last.

A phone rang.

It was Margaret.

Daniel answered immediately.

"Mom?""

Her voice sounded frightened.

"Daniel, are you with Sarah?""

"Yes. Why?""

"Someone came to the house.""

Daniel went cold.

"Who?""

"I don't know. Two men. They said they were police officers.""

Daniel looked at Helen.

"Did you let them inside?""

"No. But they showed me identification. They said they needed to ask about the documents.""

"Mom, get away from the door.""

"I already locked it.""

Daniel moved toward the exit.

"Stay on the phone with me.""

Then he heard a crash.

Margaret gasped.

"Daniel!""

The call went dead.

He ran.

Christopher followed.

Helen immediately contacted Detective Carter.

"Margaret Bennett's house is being targeted. We need units there now.""

Daniel drove faster than he ever had.

Every traffic light seemed to last forever.

When they reached the street, Margaret's front door was open.

One of the porch lights had been broken.

Daniel jumped out.

"Mom!""

He rushed inside.

The living room was in disarray.

A chair had been knocked over.

The old ceramic bowl lay shattered on the kitchen floor.

But Margaret was nowhere to be seen.

Daniel ran upstairs.

"Mom!""

Nothing.

Christopher checked the back garden.

Then he shouted.

"Daniel!""

Daniel rushed outside.

Margaret's gardening gloves lay beside the rose bushes.

A single red rose had been cut from the plant.

Beside it was a small envelope.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a handwritten message.

*Bring the second key to the Whitmore factory. Come alone.*

His phone vibrated.

A video appeared.

Margaret was sitting in a wooden chair inside a dimly lit room.

Her hands were tied.

Her cheek was bruised.

A man stood behind her.

Richard Whitmore.

Daniel felt his vision blur.

Richard looked into the camera.

"Mr. Bennett, I believe we've reached the point where negotiations are necessary.""

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Let her go.""

Richard smiled.

"Bring me the brass key your mother has been hiding. Also bring the original trust documents and the backup recording.""

"Why?""

"Because I want to finish what your father started.""

Daniel stepped back.

Richard continued.

"You have until three in the morning.""

He leaned toward Margaret.

"Tell him what happens if he refuses.""

Margaret lifted her head.

Her voice was weak but clear.

"Don't bring him anything, sweetheart.""

Richard sighed.

"Still stubborn after all these years.""

He grabbed her chin.

Daniel felt a surge of rage.

"Take your hands off her!""

Richard released Margaret.

"Three o'clock, Daniel.""

The video ended.

Christopher took the phone.

"We need to call Carter.""

Daniel was already dialing.

The detective answered.

"We're on our way. Do not go to the factory.""

Daniel stared at the empty garden.

"She's my mother.""

"I know.""

"She's been protecting me since I was twelve years old. I'm not leaving her there.""

Carter's voice hardened.

"Daniel, listen to me. If you walk into that building without a plan, Richard will have two hostages instead of one.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

He knew Carter was right.

But knowing didn't make the fear easier to bear.

Helen arrived ten minutes later with Sarah.

Sarah looked at the message.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Richard wants the key.""

"Yes.""

Sarah slowly shook her head.

"He doesn't want the key.""

"What do you mean?""

She opened her backpack and removed the old ownership agreement.

"The second key doesn't just open a storage compartment. It opens a private archive at the original Whitmore factory.""

Daniel looked at her.

"How do you know?""

"Because I found the access records three years ago. Richard has spent years trying to locate that archive.""

Helen took the document.

"What's inside?""

Sarah swallowed.

"The original recording, the complete financial ledger, and Edward Whitmore's final will.""

Christopher frowned.

"Why didn't you tell us this earlier?""

"Because I didn't know where the key was.""

Daniel looked toward the brass key in his hand.

His mother had carried it for twenty years.

The entire time, she had unknowingly protected the last remaining evidence of Richard's crimes.

Sarah continued.

"There's something else. The archive has a secondary security system. If someone opens it without the correct authorization, the contents are automatically transmitted to an independent legal trustee.""

Helen looked up.

"Who?""

Sarah hesitated.

Then she answered.

"Charlotte Whitmore.""

Daniel stared.

"She's the trustee?""

"Yes. Edward appointed her before he died.""

Helen immediately understood.

"If Charlotte is alive, she has legal authority over the original documents.""

Daniel nodded.

"And Richard knows it.""

Sarah looked at the video again.

"That's why he took Margaret. He needs the key and wants to prevent Charlotte from exercising her rights.""

Christopher's phone rang.

It was Detective Carter.

He answered and put the call on speaker.

"We've located the vehicle used in the abduction.""

"Where?"" Daniel asked.

"Near the old Whitmore factory.""

Daniel looked at Sarah.

She was staring at the photograph of Emily.

"Can we get Charlotte's location?"" she asked.

Carter paused.

"We have something better.""

He sent a photograph.

It showed a woman standing outside a roadside motel.

Her face was partially hidden beneath a hood.

But Daniel recognized her immediately.

Charlotte.

And beside her stood a little girl holding a stuffed rabbit.

Emily.

Sarah covered her mouth.

"She's alive.""

Carter continued.

"Our officers are moving in. We believe Charlotte escaped before Richard could relocate her.""

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

Then another message arrived.

This one came directly from Charlotte.

*Daniel, don't give Richard the key. Margaret knows the real combination. Your father changed it the night he died.*

Daniel looked at the brass key in his hand.

"What combination?""

A second message appeared.

*Ask your mother what she buried beneath the red roses.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then he remembered the narrow garden behind Margaret's house.

The roses his father had planted.

The same garden where Daniel had grown up.

The same roses Margaret had brought to his wedding.

He looked toward Christopher.

"We're going back.""

Helen frowned.

"Daniel, Richard has your mother.""

"No. He has the key. But he doesn't know what it opens.""

Sarah stepped closer.

"Then what are you going to do?""

Daniel looked at the photograph of Margaret.

"I'm going to find what Dad buried.""

And for the first time, he understood why his mother had chosen red roses for the wedding.

May you like

They weren't simply flowers.

They were the last message his father had left for his family.
