Chapter 7: The Car Beside the Empty Warehouse

The police found Charlotte's car at 11:47 a.m.

It was parked beside an abandoned warehouse on the industrial edge of town, approximately four miles from the address she had given Daniel.

The driver's door was open.

Her handbag was on the passenger seat.

Her phone lay broken beneath the dashboard.

And on the front passenger seat sat a single red rose.

Daniel stared at the photograph an officer had sent to Helen.

"Why would someone leave a rose?""

Helen didn't answer immediately.

She was speaking to Detective Samuel Carter, the officer assigned to the disappearance.

"We need to know whether this was a kidnapping or whether Charlotte left voluntarily," Carter said.

"Until we establish that, I can't authorize a full search of every property connected to the Whitmores.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"She called me. Someone was following her. Then the call ended.""

"I understand, Mr. Bennett.""

"No, you don't. She was carrying evidence that could expose a criminal operation.""

Carter looked at him.

"And you believe Richard Whitmore is responsible?""

"I know his lawyer was looking for her yesterday.""

"Do you have proof?""

Helen handed him the security footage from the shelter.

Carter watched Martin Graves enter the building, approach Patricia, and place Charlotte's photograph on the reception desk.

His expression changed.

"That's interesting.""

"Interesting?"" Daniel repeated.

"The man has been following her.""

"I'll have someone identify the vehicle and speak with him.""

Daniel shook his head.

"By the time you speak with him, she'll be somewhere else.""

Carter remained calm.

"Mr. Bennett, I need you to let us do our job.""

Daniel wanted to argue.

Then Margaret touched his arm.

"Please, sweetheart.""

He looked at her.

Her cheek still carried a faint yellowish mark from the previous day's slap.

He took a breath.

"All right.""

Carter turned toward his colleagues.

"Get the warehouse searched. Check nearby cameras, traffic systems, and private security footage.""

One officer hurried away.

Another approached with a transparent evidence bag.

Inside was a small folded piece of paper recovered from Charlotte's car.

Carter opened it carefully.

There were three words written in black ink.

*ASK HIS MOTHER.*

Daniel frowned.

"His mother?""

Helen looked at Margaret.

Margaret's face had turned pale.

"Who is his mother?"" Christopher asked.

Margaret slowly shook her head.

"Edward Whitmore's mother.""

Carter glanced at the paper.

"Is she alive?""

"Her name was Evelyn Whitmore," Margaret replied.

"She died many years ago.""

Daniel looked confused.

"Mom, how could asking her help us?""

Margaret took a shaky breath.

"Because Evelyn left something behind. Something Edward told your father about.""

Before she could explain further, Daniel's phone rang.

An unfamiliar number appeared.

He answered immediately.

"Charlotte?""

A man's voice responded.

"Not quite.""

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"Who is this?""

"Someone who would prefer that you stopped asking questions.""

Daniel put the call on speaker.

Helen motioned for him to keep the person talking.

The man chuckled.

"You have your father's stubbornness. Unfortunately, you also have his habit of trusting people who don't deserve it.""

"Where is Charlotte?""

"Safe, for now.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"If you've touched her—"

"Don't threaten me, Mr. Bennett. You're not in a position to make threats.""

"Let her go.""

The man sighed.

"Your father made the same mistake. He believed every secret had to be dragged into the light.""

Daniel clenched his jaw.

"Did you kill him?""

Silence.

Then the man said something that made Margaret grab Daniel's arm.

"Ask your mother what happened the night James died.""

The call disconnected.

Daniel immediately called the number back.

It was no longer available.

Detective Carter took the phone.

"Don't contact that number again. We'll trace what we can.""

Daniel turned toward Margaret.

"Mom, we're not leaving until you tell me everything.""

Margaret lowered herself onto a nearby bench.

For years, she had believed silence was the safest way to protect her son.

Now silence was putting someone else in danger.

"The night your father died, he came home around ten," she began.

"He was frightened. I'd never seen him like that.""

"What happened?""

"He told me someone had followed him from work. He asked me to pack a small bag for you and get ready to leave.""

Daniel listened without interrupting.

"Then someone knocked on the back door. Your father went outside. I heard shouting, and then a crash.""

"Was it Richard?""

"I couldn't see clearly. But I recognized the car.""

"Whose car?""

Margaret looked directly at him.

"Richard Whitmore's.""

Daniel's hands began to shake.

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"I did. But Richard had an alibi. His lawyer produced records showing he was at a business dinner across town.""

Helen looked up.

"Was there a witness?""

Margaret nodded.

"Martin Graves.""

Everyone fell silent.

The same lawyer who had prepared the forged documents.

The same man who had been searching for Charlotte.

The same man who had helped Richard avoid suspicion after James died.

Detective Carter immediately made a note.

"That changes things.""

Margaret continued.

"After the funeral, Richard came to my house. He told me James had been involved in dangerous business dealings and that I should be grateful the police hadn't investigated me.""

Daniel stared at her.

"He threatened you?""

"He said if I wanted you to grow up safely, I should stop asking questions.""

Daniel looked away.

For twenty years, his mother had carried that fear alone.

Then Carter's radio crackled.

An officer's voice came through.

"Detective, we've found something in the warehouse.""

Carter grabbed the radio.

"What?""

"A second vehicle. Registered to a company connected to Whitmore Holdings.""

"Any sign of the missing woman?""

A pause.

"Yes. We found blood on the floor near the loading entrance.""

Daniel felt the world tilt.

Then the officer added:

"There's also a security camera recording. It shows a woman entering the warehouse voluntarily at approximately ten this morning.""

Daniel looked at Helen.

"Charlotte?""

The officer checked the footage.

"Negative. It's Margaret Bennett.""

Every face turned toward Daniel's mother.

Margaret stared at the radio.

May you like

Her lips parted.

And for the first time since the wedding, she looked completely unable to speak.
