Chapter 18: The Last Bargain
The photograph of Emily's abandoned rabbit lay on the table between them.
Sarah stared at it without speaking.
Daniel had seen people grieve before.
But this was different.
His sister was still standing, still breathing, yet something inside her seemed to have gone silent.
Helen sat beside her.
"We will find her.""
Sarah looked up.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
"I know.""
"Richard has had her for months. Every time I get close, he moves her. Every time I find evidence, he threatens her.""
Helen held her gaze.
"Then we stop chasing his threats and start dismantling his control.""
Sarah wiped her eyes.
"How?""
Christopher opened his laptop.
"Rebecca gave us access to the old company transaction system. Richard is preparing a final transfer tonight. If Sarah submits the historical ownership records, the system will flag every suspicious transaction.""
Helen nodded.
"And if we secure the evidence, the court can review the guardianship arrangement and issue emergency protection.""
Daniel looked at Sarah.
"Can you do it?""
She took a long breath.
"Yes.""
They returned to Whitmore Holdings under police escort.
Sarah entered the archive office and logged into the corporate system.
A warning appeared.
*TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION PENDING.*
She opened the file.
The transaction was enormous.
Nearly forty million dollars was scheduled to leave the company's accounts and move into a holding company registered overseas.
Christopher studied the details.
"These accounts connect to the shell companies in the first ledger.""
Sarah nodded.
"Richard has been preparing this for years.""
Daniel looked at the screen.
"Can we trace where the money goes?""
"Yes," Christopher said.
"But we need to let the system process the authorization first.""
Helen looked uncomfortable.
"Are you certain?""
Sarah nodded.
"If I block the transfer manually, Richard will know immediately. If I submit the historical records, the system will automatically flag the transaction and preserve the approval trail.""
Daniel leaned against the desk.
"Do it.""
Sarah placed her hand on the mouse.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Hello?""
Richard's voice filled the room.
"Sarah. I was hoping you'd make the sensible choice.""
She looked at Daniel.
"What do you want?""
"Your signature.""
"You already have my signature on dozens of documents.""
"I want the one that transfers the remaining ownership rights.""
Sarah's face hardened.
"Charlotte owns those rights.""
Richard chuckled.
"Charlotte is not in a position to exercise anything.""
"She's alive.""
Silence.
Then Richard said, "You should be careful what you believe.""
Sarah's voice trembled.
"Where is Emily?""
"Safe.""
"Let me speak to her.""
"Not until the paperwork is complete.""
Sarah closed her eyes.
Then she heard a tiny voice in the background.
"Mommy?""
Her entire body stiffened.
"Emily?""
The voice came again.
"Mommy, I want my rabbit.""
Sarah pressed a hand over her mouth.
"Baby, I'm coming.""
Richard interrupted.
"That's enough.""
The call ended.
Sarah lowered the phone.
Daniel placed both hands on the desk.
"He's using her as leverage because he's running out of time.""
Helen nodded.
"And he knows we have evidence.""
Christopher pointed at the screen.
"The transaction is about to process.""
Sarah looked at the authorization button.
Then she looked at the photograph of Emily.
"Do it," she whispered.
She clicked.
A confirmation appeared.
*HISTORICAL OWNERSHIP REVIEW INITIATED.*
Then another message appeared.
*TRANSFER SUSPENDED PENDING INVESTIGATION.*
Christopher smiled.
"We got it.""
Helen immediately called Carter.
"Detective, the transfer has been suspended. We have the authorization trail and the linked shell accounts.""
Carter replied that officers were preparing to execute warrants.
Daniel turned toward Sarah.
"Now we get Emily.""
But Sarah was staring at a new notification.
An email had arrived from an address she recognized.
Martin Graves.
The subject line read:
*YOUR DAUGHTER'S LOCATION.*
Sarah opened it.
There was a photograph of Emily sitting in the back seat of a black car.
Underneath was a short message.
*Richard has made a mistake. I can correct it. Meet me at the old factory in thirty minutes. Come alone.*
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
Sarah looked at him.
"He knows where she is.""
"It's a trap.""
"I don't care.""
Helen took the phone.
"We'll send officers with you.""
Martin had included another attachment.
It was a scanned document.
Sarah opened it.
Her face drained of color.
It was an original guardianship agreement.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Sarah.
But the date was impossible.
It had been signed three years before Emily was born.
Daniel stared at it.
"How can that be?""
Helen examined the page.
"This isn't a guardianship agreement.""
She turned it over.
On the reverse was a second document, nearly hidden beneath the first.
It was a medical consent form.
The name of the patient was Elizabeth Graves.
Sarah looked at it.
"That's my mother.""
Helen read the final line.
"Emergency authorization for the removal of a newborn child.""
Sarah backed away from the table.
"No.""
Daniel looked at her.
"What does it mean?""
Sarah's voice broke.
"My mother died when I was six months old.""
Helen continued reading.
"The hospital records indicate that the child was transferred into the care of Martin Graves.""
Sarah stared at the signature.
Her hands began shaking.
"Martin told me my mother died in childbirth.""
Margaret, who had joined them by phone, spoke through the speaker.
"Sarah, sweetheart, what is it?""
Sarah couldn't answer.
Helen turned another page.
There was a handwritten note from Martin.
*The child must never know what happened to her mother. James Bennett must be kept away.*
Daniel felt the room tilt.
"Martin knew James was your father.""
Sarah nodded slowly.
"He always told me James abandoned us.""
Helen looked at the document again.
"There's something worse.""
She pointed to the final paragraph.
It stated that Elizabeth had been alive when the baby was transferred.
Sarah stared at her.
"You're saying my mother didn't die?""
Helen looked up.
"I'm saying this document raises serious questions about the story Martin told you.""
Daniel's phone rang.
It was Detective Carter.
"We've found Martin's vehicle," he said.
"It's heading toward the old factory.""
"Is he alone?""
"No.""
Daniel looked at Sarah.
"Who is with him?""
Carter paused.
Then he answered.
"Richard Whitmore.""
Sarah closed her eyes.
A new message appeared on her phone.
This time, it contained no photograph.
Only six words.
*Ask your mother about Elizabeth's grave.*
Sarah looked at Daniel.
"Mom knows something.""
Daniel immediately called Margaret.
She answered on the first ring.
"Daniel?""
"Mom, did Elizabeth Graves die?""
There was a long silence.
Then Margaret began to cry.
"Daniel, I was hoping this day would never come.""
Sarah moved closer to the phone.
"Margaret, please. Tell me the truth.""
Margaret took a shaky breath.
"Elizabeth didn't die in childbirth.""
Sarah's knees nearly buckled.
"Where is she?""
Margaret whispered:
"She's been alive all these years.""
May you like
And before anyone could ask another question, Margaret added:
"She's the woman Richard has been protecting you from.""
