Chapter 14: The Night of the Second Recording
At 8:55 p.m., Daniel stood inside a surveillance vehicle parked two blocks from Whitmore Holdings.
Detective Carter sat beside him, reviewing the operation with two officers.
Helen was coordinating with the district attorney's office.
Christopher was checking the company's security system.
Sarah sat quietly in the back seat.
She hadn't stopped looking at Emily's photograph.
Daniel turned toward her.
"She'll be all right.""
Sarah didn't answer.
"Sarah.""
She finally looked up.
"You don't know that.""
"No. But I know we're not leaving without her.""
Sarah wiped her eyes.
"She likes pancakes with chocolate chips. She hates thunderstorms. And when she's scared, she holds the little stuffed rabbit her father gave her.""
Daniel smiled faintly.
"Then we'll make sure she gets her rabbit back.""
Sarah looked at him.
"Do you have children?""
"No.""
"Then you won't understand.""
Daniel nodded.
"You're right. I don't. But I know what Mom would do if someone tried to take me.""
Sarah looked down.
Their mother.
The woman Sarah had barely known as a child, yet whose kindness had apparently remained part of her father's stories for decades.
"Did she hate me?"" Sarah asked.
Daniel turned toward her.
"What?""
"Margaret. Did she hate the fact that Dad had another daughter?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Never.""
Sarah looked unconvinced.
"How do you know?""
"Because she kept your photograph. She told me about you before I even knew your name.""
Sarah began crying again.
Daniel reached over and took her hand.
"She wants to meet you. She wants to meet Emily too.""
Sarah nodded.
Then Detective Carter turned around.
"It's time.""
They entered the Whitmore Holdings building through a side entrance using Sarah's access credentials.
The archive room was on the twenty-second floor.
Inside, rows of locked cabinets contained decades of financial documents.
Sarah approached a steel cabinet marked HISTORICAL RECORDINGS.
She entered her code.
The cabinet opened.
There were several labeled storage cases.
She found the one marked with her father's name.
*JAMES BENNETT — 2006 INCIDENT.*
Daniel's hands trembled.
"That's it?""
Sarah nodded.
She removed a small digital recorder and connected it to a computer.
A file appeared.
The date matched the night of James's accident.
Helen listened through headphones first.
Her expression changed.
"What is it?""
She handed the headphones to Daniel.
A man's voice filled his ears.
Richard Whitmore.
"I told you to make sure Bennett never reaches the police.""
Then Martin's voice.
"He already copied the records.""
Richard answered.
"Then take the copies.""
"What if he refuses?""
There was a pause.
Then Richard said:
"Make the accident look like his fault. Nobody will question it.""
Daniel stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
Martin asked, "And the boy?""
Richard replied:
"He's twelve. He won't understand anything. Margaret will be too frightened to talk.""
Daniel removed the headphones.
His face was pale.
"That's them.""
Helen nodded.
"Yes.""
Sarah looked toward the door.
"There's another file.""
She opened it.
A second recording began.
This time, the voice belonged to James.
"If anyone finds this, I want them to know that I didn't leave my children willingly. I tried to protect both of them. Richard has threatened Margaret, and Martin has threatened Sarah.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
His father's voice continued.
"I've placed the original ownership agreement with the trust documents. If Richard ever tries to take control of the company, the beneficiaries must be informed.""
Then came a sound.
A door opening.
James spoke again.
"Richard? What are you doing here?""
The recording ended abruptly.
Sarah stared at the screen.
"That's where it stops.""
Daniel looked at Helen.
"Can we use this?""
Helen nodded.
"If the original device is authenticated and the chain of custody is preserved, this could be powerful evidence. But we need to secure it immediately.""
Detective Carter signaled to the officers.
"Bag everything.""
Before they could finish, the archive room lights flickered.
Sarah looked up.
"That's strange.""
Christopher checked his tablet.
"Someone just accessed the building's security system.""
Carter reached for his radio.
"All units, stay alert.""
A loud alarm sounded.
The archive door locked automatically.
Then the lights went out.
A voice came through the ceiling speakers.
"Good evening, everyone.""
Richard Whitmore.
Sarah went pale.
"He's in the building.""
Richard continued.
"I understand you've found something that belongs to me.""
Daniel stepped toward the speaker.
"Your father's company belongs to Charlotte.""
A brief silence followed.
Then Richard laughed.
"Charlotte is a troubled woman with a history of instability. I suggest you stop listening to her.""
Helen shouted toward the ceiling.
"Richard, this building is under police surveillance!""
"Then I suppose you should all be very careful.""
The emergency lights came on.
A side door opened.
Martin Graves entered.
He was wearing a dark suit and holding a small remote control.
Daniel stepped in front of Sarah.
"Where is Charlotte?""
Martin smiled.
"Somewhere comfortable.""
"Where's Emily?""
Martin's smile disappeared.
"Your sister should have thought about her daughter before becoming involved in matters she didn't understand.""
Sarah stepped forward.
"Don't you dare speak about Emily.""
Martin looked at her.
For a moment, something almost like affection crossed his face.
Then it vanished.
"Sarah, I've given you everything.""
"You stole my daughter.""
"I protected her.""
"You used her to control me!""
Martin shrugged.
"Every parent makes sacrifices.""
Sarah slapped him.
The sound echoed through the archive room.
Martin's face turned sideways.
Daniel stared.
For the first time, he saw the same kind of rage Lauren had shown his mother at the wedding.
But Sarah didn't stop.
"You took my childhood. You lied about my father. You helped Richard destroy our family. And now you're using my little girl.""
Martin raised the remote.
Carter drew his weapon.
"Drop it!""
Martin hesitated.
Then he pressed a button.
A loud crash sounded somewhere below.
The building's fire alarm activated.
Smoke began pouring through the ventilation system.
Officers rushed toward the corridor.
In the confusion, Martin pushed past one of them and ran.
Daniel chased him.
"Martin!""
They reached the elevator lobby.
Martin turned and threw a small object toward Daniel.
It struck the wall and shattered.
Daniel stumbled.
Martin disappeared through the emergency stairwell.
Carter caught up seconds later.
"Stay here!""
Daniel pointed toward the stairs.
"He's getting away!""
Carter pursued him with two officers.
Daniel returned to the archive room.
Sarah was standing beside Helen.
The original recorder was gone.
Christopher stared at the empty table.
"Someone took it.""
Daniel looked around.
"Who?""
Helen examined the security footage on her laptop.
Then she stopped.
A figure had entered the room during the blackout.
It wasn't Martin.
It wasn't Richard.
It was someone wearing a police uniform.
Carter returned several minutes later.
"Martin escaped through the underground garage.""
Daniel looked at the screen.
"Who was the officer?""
Carter examined the image.
His expression changed.
"That's not one of ours.""
Helen enlarged the frame.
The man removed his cap.
Daniel recognized him.
It was the same man who had been guarding Margaret's house earlier that evening.
Richard's private security chief.
And beneath the image was a timestamp showing he had entered the building seven minutes before the fire alarm.
May you like
He hadn't come to rescue Martin.
He had come for the recording.
