Chapter 6: The Missing Heiress
The women's shelter stood between a laundromat and a small medical clinic.
It was an ordinary brick building with a blue front door and a narrow garden filled with potted plants.
Daniel had expected something more dramatic.
Instead, there was a children's bicycle beside the entrance and a handwritten sign reminding visitors to close the gate.
Helen knocked.
A woman in her forties opened the door.
"Can I help you?""
"My name is Helen Brooks. We're looking for Charlotte Whitmore.""
The woman's expression changed immediately.
"Who are you?""
"I'm her attorney.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"I'm Daniel Bennett. My father was James Bennett.""
The woman studied his face.
Then she opened the door wider.
"Come inside.""
They were led into a small office.
A kettle was boiling on a counter. Children's drawings covered one wall. Somewhere down the hallway, a baby was crying.
The woman introduced herself as Patricia, the shelter director.
"Charlotte has been staying here under a different name," Patricia explained.
"She asked us not to give out her location unless someone mentioned James Bennett.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Why?""
"She said your father was the only person who had ever tried to protect her.""
Margaret looked at him.
"Your father knew her.""
Daniel nodded.
"Apparently, better than we realized.""
Patricia studied the documents Helen had brought.
"Is this about Richard Whitmore?""
Helen didn't answer immediately.
"Why do you ask?""
Patricia looked toward the office door.
"Because Charlotte left this morning after receiving a threatening phone call.""
Daniel stood.
"What?""
"She was frightened. She said someone had found out she was staying here.""
"Did she say where she was going?""
Patricia shook her head.
"She left a note for you.""
She opened a drawer and removed a folded piece of paper.
Daniel unfolded it.
Daniel,
If you've found your father's ledger, then you know Richard has been lying for years. But the ledger isn't enough. He destroyed the original ownership records and replaced them with forged documents.
I have the second set.
I know who helped him.
Don't trust anyone who tells you this is only about money.
Find me before he does.
There was no signature.
Daniel read it twice.
Christopher looked at Patricia.
"Did she mention anyone she was afraid of?""
Patricia hesitated.
"She mentioned a lawyer named Martin Graves.""
Helen's expression hardened.
"That's the same attorney who handled the fraudulent property application.""
Patricia nodded.
"Charlotte said he had represented her father before his death. Afterward, he became Richard's personal attorney.""
Daniel looked down at the note.
"Where can we find her?""
"I don't know.""
Patricia lowered her voice.
"But there's something else. A man came here yesterday asking about her. He claimed to be a private investigator.""
"Did you get his name?""
"He called himself Collins.""
Margaret gripped Daniel's arm.
"The man who came to my house.""
Patricia nodded.
"He showed me a photograph of Charlotte and said she was involved in a financial dispute. He wanted her room number.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"What did you tell him?""
"I told him we don't disclose residents' information.""
"Did he leave?""
"Eventually.""
Christopher pulled out his phone.
"Do you have security footage?""
Patricia nodded.
"I can show you.""
They followed her to a small office behind the reception desk.
A monitor displayed footage from the previous afternoon.
At 3:42 p.m., a man in a gray suit entered the building.
He approached the reception desk.
Patricia appeared on screen.
The man placed a photograph on the counter.
He spoke for several minutes.
Then he looked directly at the security camera.
Christopher paused the footage.
Daniel stared.
It was Martin Graves.
The same lawyer who had prepared his father's trust.
The same man who had been seated at the wedding.
The same man who had supposedly helped Margaret with her property documents.
Helen took a photograph of the screen.
"We need to preserve this footage.""
Patricia nodded.
"I'll make a copy.""
Daniel's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice whispered.
"Daniel Bennett?""
"Yes. Who is this?""
"My name is Charlotte.""
Daniel looked at Helen.
"Where are you?""
"Don't say my name again. Are you alone?""
"No. I'm with my mother, my attorney, and a friend.""
There was a pause.
"Your father told me you would be different from Richard.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Charlotte, I have your father's ownership agreement. I found the ledger.""
"Then you know why Richard wants me gone.""
"Yes.""
"Not everything.""
Her voice broke slightly.
"Your father discovered that Richard didn't just steal company money. He stole my identity.""
Daniel frowned.
"What?""
"After my father died, Richard told everyone I had been sent overseas to live with relatives. He used that story to gain control of my inheritance. But I never went overseas.""
"Where were you?""
"I was placed in a private boarding school. Richard paid the fees and visited twice a year. He told me my father had left debts, not money. He made me believe I had nothing.""
Daniel felt sick.
"Why didn't you challenge him?""
"I was seventeen when I learned the truth. By then, Richard had forged documents showing that I had voluntarily surrendered my inheritance.""
Helen signaled for Daniel to put the call on speaker.
Charlotte continued.
"I found the original documents five years ago. I went to Martin Graves for help.""
Daniel glanced at Helen.
"What did he do?""
"He told Richard.""
The room fell silent.
Charlotte's breathing became uneven.
"Two weeks later, my apartment was broken into. My laptop disappeared. Someone followed me to work. I lost my job after Richard's company contacted my employer.""
Daniel clenched his fist.
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
"I did. But the documents Richard showed them had my signature. He had spent years creating a version of my life that looked more believable than the truth.""
Helen leaned toward the phone.
"Charlotte, this is Helen Brooks. I'm representing Daniel. We have your father's original ownership agreement and a financial ledger. We can protect the evidence.""
"Can you protect me?""
Helen answered immediately.
"Yes, but we need to know where you are.""
Charlotte went quiet.
Then she whispered an address.
Daniel wrote it down.
"I'll come get you.""
"No. Not yet.""
"Why?""
"Because someone is following me.""
Daniel looked toward the window.
Charlotte continued.
"I have a copy of the original company records. But the person who gave them to me is still working inside Whitmore Holdings.""
"Who?""
"Someone close to Richard.""
"Tell me their name.""
A sudden noise came through the phone.
Charlotte gasped.
"He's here.""
Daniel stood.
"Charlotte? What's happening?""
"I can see his car.""
"Get somewhere safe.""
"Daniel, listen to me. Your father didn't die believing he had failed.""
Daniel froze.
"What are you talking about?""
Charlotte's voice dropped to a whisper.
"He knew Richard was dangerous. He knew the evidence would eventually reach you. But he also knew something about your family that Margaret has never told you.""
Daniel looked at his mother.
Margaret had gone completely still.
"Charlotte, what does that mean?""
"Your father wasn't investigating Richard only because of the company.""
A door slammed somewhere near Charlotte.
She screamed.
Then the call disconnected.
Daniel immediately called back.
The phone rang once.
Twice.
Then a recorded message announced that the number was unavailable.
Christopher grabbed his jacket.
"We're going to the address.""
Helen shook her head.
"Not without involving the police. If someone is following her, we could make things worse.""
Daniel turned toward Margaret.
His mother was staring at the floor.
"Mom.""
She didn't respond.
"Mom, what did Dad know about our family?""
Margaret slowly lifted her eyes.
For a long moment, she looked as though she might collapse.
Then she whispered:
"Your father discovered that Richard Whitmore had been involved in the accident that killed him.""
Daniel stopped breathing.
Margaret reached for his hand.
"He didn't want me to tell you until he was certain.""
Christopher stared at her.
"Mrs. Bennett, are you saying your husband's death wasn't an accident?""
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know.""
She looked at Daniel.
"But the night before he died, your father came home with blood on his shirt, a broken watch, and one sentence he kept repeating.""
Daniel's voice was barely audible.
"What sentence?""
Margaret closed her eyes.
"He said, 'If anything happens to me, don't let Richard raise our son.''"
And just as Daniel tried to process those words, Helen's phone rang.
It was the police.
They had found Charlotte's car.
It was abandoned beside an empty warehouse.

The driver's door was open.
And on the passenger seat was a single red rose.
