Chapter 19: The Mother Behind the Locked Door
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Sarah stood frozen beside the conference table, her phone pressed against her ear.
"Margaret," she whispered.
"You said my mother is alive?""
On the other end, Margaret was crying.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
Sarah gripped the edge of the table.
"Where is she?""
"I don't know where she is now. But I know where Richard kept her after the hospital.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Mom, how could you know this and never tell us?""
"Because James made me promise. He believed Richard would hurt Elizabeth if anyone tried to bring her home.""
Sarah shook her head.
"Why would Richard keep my mother away from me?""
Margaret's voice broke.
"Because Elizabeth knew the truth about your father's company. She had documents proving Richard and Martin had changed the original inheritance records. She also knew something about James's accident.""
Sarah covered her mouth.
"What happened to her?""
"After you were born, Martin told everyone she had died. But she was transferred to a private medical facility under another name. James discovered the truth shortly before his accident.""
Daniel looked at Helen.
"Do we know which facility?""
Margaret hesitated.
"An old rehabilitation center outside town. Your father visited once. He came home crying. He said Elizabeth was alive, but she wasn't well enough to leave.""
Sarah's eyes filled.
"And he never told me?""
"He wanted to bring you both home. He was afraid Richard would use you as leverage.""
Sarah turned away.
For years, she had believed James had abandoned her.
Now she was discovering that the people who claimed to have protected her had stolen nearly everything from her.
Daniel took her hand.
"Your mother may still be alive. We can find her.""
Sarah looked at him.
"What if she doesn't remember me?""
"Then we'll tell her who you are.""
Helen interrupted gently.
"We need to focus. Martin and Richard are heading to the old factory. We shouldn't let them control the next move.""
Carter joined the call.
"Officers are approaching the factory now. We have a warrant for Richard's arrest and are coordinating with the district attorney.""
Daniel looked at Sarah.
"Can you tell us anything about the rehabilitation center?""
Sarah wiped her cheeks.
"I can try.""
She opened her laptop and searched the old corporate archive.
After several minutes, she found a medical payment record.
A company called Whitmore Care Services had paid monthly expenses for a patient identified only as E. Graves.
The payments had continued for twenty years.
Sarah stared at the screen.
"That's her.""
Helen leaned over.
"There's an address.""
Sarah read it aloud.
"Riverside Recovery Residence.""
Carter immediately dispatched officers.
Daniel turned to Sarah.
"We'll go there after the factory.""
Sarah nodded.
But before they could leave, a new message arrived.
It came from Martin.
*If you want your mother alive, come to the factory. Richard doesn't know I have her records.*
Sarah showed Daniel.
He frowned.
"He's trying to bargain.""
"Maybe he knows where Elizabeth is," Helen said.
Carter's voice came through the phone.
"Do not approach him. We're already moving.""
A loud crash sounded in the background of the call.
Then Carter shouted something to an officer.
The connection dropped.
Daniel immediately called back.
No answer.
Christopher looked at the security feed.
"There's movement inside the factory.""
He enlarged the image.
Two vehicles had entered through the loading entrance.
One belonged to Richard.
The other belonged to Martin.
Sarah stared at the screen.
"He's going to kill him.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Martin knows too much. Richard needs him alive until he gets the original documents.""
"Then we have to stop them.""
Helen grabbed her coat.
"We're going to the factory. But we stay with the officers.""
The factory was dark except for a single row of lights near the old administrative building.
Police vehicles surrounded the property.
Carter met them at the entrance.
"Richard is inside. Martin is with him.""
"Did you find Margaret?"" Daniel asked.
"She's safe. We recovered her from a storage room behind the factory offices. She was taken to the hospital for examination.""
Daniel closed his eyes in relief.
"Thank God.""
Sarah rushed toward him.
"Can I see her?""
"She's stable. But there's something else.""
Carter lowered his voice.
"Richard has barricaded himself inside the records room. Martin is there too.""
Sarah looked toward the building.
"Then we need to get Elizabeth's location from him.""
Carter nodded.
"We're going to try.""
A loud voice echoed through the factory.
"Daniel!""
Richard stood behind the upper-floor window.
He held a small device in one hand.
Martin stood several feet behind him.
Richard looked down.
"You've caused me a great deal of trouble.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"You kidnapped my mother. You threatened Sarah's daughter. You stole an entire company.""
Richard smiled.
"Your father was no better. He wanted to take everything Edward built.""
"Charlotte is Edward's rightful heir.""
"Charlotte is a frightened woman with no understanding of business.""
A second voice came from inside the room.
"That's funny. You always said the same thing about me.""
Everyone looked up.
A woman stepped into view.
She had gray hair and a thin face.
But her eyes were unmistakable.
Sarah stopped breathing.
"Mom?""
The woman looked down.
For a moment, she seemed confused.
Then she pressed one hand against the glass.
"Sarah?""
Sarah began crying.
"Mom!""
Elizabeth Graves was alive.
Richard grabbed her arm.
"Get back!""
Martin moved between them.
"Let her go, Richard.""
Richard turned on him.
"You have no authority to tell me what to do.""
Martin's face twisted.
"I raised Sarah. I protected her.""
"You lied to her.""
"I did what was necessary.""
Elizabeth stepped forward.
"You did what Richard paid you to do.""
Martin looked at her.
"Elizabeth, please.""
"You told my daughter I was dead.""
Martin's eyes filled.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
"You took my child.""
Richard laughed.
"Enough. Both of you.""
He raised the device.
Carter shouted.
"Richard Whitmore! Put it down!""
Richard looked at Daniel.
"Bring me the brass key. Bring me the original ownership agreement. Then everyone walks away.""
Daniel took a step forward.
"You don't have anything left to bargain with.""
Richard smiled.
"Don't I?""
He turned toward Elizabeth.
"Tell them what happened to James.""
Elizabeth looked down at Sarah.
Then she spoke.
"Richard was not the only person who wanted James dead.""
Sarah shook her head.
"Mom, don't.""
Elizabeth continued.
"Martin changed the report. Richard arranged the accident. But the person who gave Richard the information about James's route was someone inside the family.""
Daniel looked at Margaret's empty place beside him.
"Who?""
Elizabeth's eyes filled with tears.
She pointed toward Martin.
"Martin wasn't the one who told Richard where James would be.""
Martin stared at her.
"Elizabeth, stop.""
She looked directly at Daniel.
"It was your mother.""
Daniel went completely still.
"No.""
Elizabeth nodded.
"Margaret gave Richard the route because she believed he was going to help James.""
The silence was unbearable.
Daniel looked toward the police vehicles.
Then back at the window.
"You're lying.""
Elizabeth shook her head.
"She didn't know what Richard intended. But she gave him the information.""
Daniel felt as though the ground had disappeared beneath him.
Before he could respond, a gunshot echoed from inside the factory.
The window shattered.
Sarah screamed.
Martin fell backward.
Richard disappeared from view.
Carter shouted orders.
Officers stormed the building.
Daniel ran toward the entrance.
Inside, Martin lay on the floor, blood spreading across his shirt.
Elizabeth was kneeling beside him.
Richard was gone.
Daniel looked at Martin.
"Who shot you?""
Martin struggled to speak.
His eyes moved toward Elizabeth.
Then toward Sarah.
He whispered:
"Your mother didn't betray James.""
Sarah leaned closer.
"What are you saying?""
Martin coughed.
"She was trying to save him.""
He gripped Daniel's sleeve.
"Ask Margaret who was in the second car.""
May you like
Then his hand fell.
And the room went silent.
