Chapter 10: The Daughter His Father Never Told Him About

For several seconds, Daniel couldn't move.

He stared at the photograph of the woman holding a newborn baby.

Then he looked at his mother.

"Mom, what did Evelyn mean?""

Margaret sat down slowly.

Her hands were trembling.

"Your father had a daughter before he met me.""

Daniel felt as though someone had struck him.

"An older daughter?""

Margaret nodded.

"Her name was Sarah. Her mother was a woman named Elizabeth Graves. They were young when they met. James loved her, but they separated before Sarah was born.""

Helen leaned forward.

"Was Sarah legally acknowledged as his daughter?""

"Yes. Your father signed the birth certificate. He paid child support and visited whenever he could.""

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"Then why have I never heard about her?""

Margaret's eyes filled.

"Because Elizabeth died when Sarah was six months old. Her father, Martin Graves, took custody. Your father wanted to remain involved, but Martin refused.""

Evelyn added quietly, "Martin had always hated James. He believed James had stolen Elizabeth from him, even though she had chosen James.""

Daniel looked toward her.

"Why would Martin work for Richard?""

"Because Richard offered him something he wanted more than money.""

"What?""

"Control.""

Evelyn walked toward the fireplace.

"Martin spent years trying to prove that James was an irresponsible father. Richard helped him obtain legal documents, financial records, and influential witnesses. Together, they created a story that made James appear unfit to raise Sarah.""

Margaret wiped her eyes.

"Your father fought them. He went to court. He hired lawyers. But Martin had powerful friends.""

Daniel's voice grew sharper.

"Did Dad ever tell you about this?""

"Yes. Before he died, he told me Sarah had contacted him. She wanted to meet her younger brother.""

Daniel froze.

"She knew about me?""

Margaret nodded.

"She wanted to come to your birthday party. Your father was going to arrange everything.""

"What happened?""

Margaret looked down.

"Three days before your birthday, James died.""

Nobody spoke.

Christopher slowly sat down.

"Are you saying Martin Graves helped Richard destroy James's family because he wanted to keep Sarah away from him?""

Evelyn nodded.

"And when James discovered Richard's financial crimes, Martin helped Richard silence him.""

Daniel stood and walked toward the window.

His father had died when he was twelve.

For years, he had believed it was a tragic accident.

Now he was learning that his father had been fighting several battles at once—against a corrupt business partner, a manipulative attorney, and a man who wanted to control his own child.

"Where is Sarah now?"" Daniel asked.

Margaret looked toward Evelyn.

Evelyn removed another envelope from the drawer.

"She's been living under a different surname.""

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a photograph of a woman in her early thirties.

She had dark brown hair, bright eyes, and a small scar near her chin.

On the back was an address.

Christopher studied the photograph.

"She looks familiar.""

Evelyn nodded.

"She should. She's been working for Whitmore Holdings for the last four years.""

Daniel stared.

"She's inside Richard's company?""

"Yes.""

Helen examined the photograph.

"Does Richard know who she is?""

"Of course. He hired her deliberately. He wanted Martin to keep her close.""

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"Why would he hire the daughter of the man helping him?""

Evelyn's answer was chilling.

"Because Sarah has access to the company's original financial archive.""

Helen stood.

"Then she may be the person Charlotte was referring to when she said someone inside Whitmore Holdings had the other half of the truth.""

Daniel looked again at the photograph.

His sister.

A woman he had never met.

A woman who might hold the evidence needed to expose the people responsible for his father's death.

His phone vibrated.

A new message.

*Unknown:* Your family reunion can wait. Bring the trust documents to the factory at 8 p.m.

A second message arrived.

It contained another photograph of Charlotte.

This time, Martin was holding a knife against the rope binding her wrists.

Daniel immediately called Detective Carter.

Carter answered on the first ring.

"Tell me you have something.""

"We have a hostage situation.""

Daniel explained the video.

Carter's voice hardened.

"Do not go there. We'll arrange surveillance and coordinate a rescue.""

"Martin specifically requested my mother.""

"Then we're not sending your mother.""

Daniel looked toward Margaret.

She was already shaking her head.

"I won't let Charlotte suffer because of me," she said.

Daniel took her hands.

"You're not going anywhere.""

Evelyn approached.

"Martin wants Margaret because he believes she knows where the original evidence is.""

"She doesn't," Daniel replied.

Evelyn shook her head.

"She knows more than she remembers.""

Margaret looked at her.

"What do you mean?""

Evelyn walked to the dining table and placed the old photograph beside the letter from James.

"Twenty years ago, James gave you a second key. Not the one to the bank. Another one.""

Margaret stared at the table.

Then her face changed.

"Oh.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Mom?""

Margaret slowly reached into the pocket of her floral dress.

She removed a tiny brass key attached to a faded blue ribbon.

"I thought it was for your father's old filing cabinet.""

Evelyn's eyes widened.

"Where did you get that?""

"James gave it to me the night before he died.""

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

"That's the key to the original archive.""

Helen immediately called Detective Carter.

But before she could explain, the house lights suddenly went out.

A crash sounded from the back of the property.

Christopher pulled Daniel away from the window.

"Get down!""

Two sharp knocks struck the front door.

Then a man's voice called from outside.

"Mrs. Bennett? It's Martin.""

Margaret went white.

May you like

Martin Graves had found them.

And this time, he wasn't asking for a key.
