Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden In My Father's Last Files

The problem with secrets was that they never disappeared.

They waited.

They survived.

And eventually, they came back looking for answers.

My father’s files filled my office for an entire week.

Every document was reviewed.

Every transaction was analyzed.

Every old partnership was examined.

And slowly, a picture began forming.

A picture my father had tried to protect me from.

Victor Sterling had not simply lost a business battle.

He had lost everything because of one decision.

A decision made by my father.

But the truth was far more complicated than everyone believed.

According to the records, Victor had attempted to illegally acquire Ashcroft Holdings through hidden investors.

He had manipulated contracts.

Moved money.

Betrayed partners.

My father discovered the plan and exposed him.

The lawsuit destroyed Sterling International.

But there was one thing I didn't understand.

Why had my father continued helping Victor’s family afterward?

Why had he paid Celeste’s debts?

Why had he protected people connected to his enemies?

That was not the behavior of a man seeking revenge.

That was the behavior of a man carrying guilt.

I found the answer in a handwritten journal.

My father's private journal.

Something Daniel discovered hidden inside an old storage box.

The entry was dated six months before his death.

*Victor believes I destroyed him. He is wrong. I destroyed the version of himself he created. But perhaps I should have done more to stop him before he became that person.*

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

My father wasn't afraid of Victor.

He was afraid of what Victor might become.

The next entry made my heart stop.

*If Victor ever returns, Eleanor must know the truth. She must understand that some people do not seek justice. They seek revenge.*

I closed the journal.

Because suddenly, everything made sense.

Victor had not spent twenty years rebuilding.

He had spent twenty years waiting.

Waiting for the Ashcroft name to become vulnerable.

Waiting for the right person to attack.

And Adrian had unknowingly opened the door.

That evening, I received another message.

This time, there was a photograph.

Adrian.

Meeting Victor.

A recent photograph.

My hands tightened.

Adrian was still working with him.

Even after everything.

I called him immediately.

He answered after one ring.

"Eleanor.""

"You met Victor today.""

Silence.

Then:

"How did you know?""

I closed my eyes.

"You are still protecting him.""

"No.""

His voice became defensive.

"I'm protecting myself.""

There it was again.

Everything was always about him.

"Adrian, do you understand what he is trying to do?""

"I understand more than you think.""

"Then why are you helping him?""

A long pause.

Then he said something I never expected.

"Because I owe him.""

The words confused me.

"Owe him what?""

"He gave me a chance.""

I almost laughed.

"Victor used you.""

"No.""

Adrian sounded certain.

"He believed in me.""

I shook my head.

"No, Adrian. He believed he could use you.""

He didn't respond.

"Where are you?""

Another pause.

Then:

"Why?""

"Because I need to know if you are still my enemy.""

The silence lasted several seconds.

Finally, he answered.

"I don't know.""

And strangely…

That was the most honest thing he had ever said.

I ended the call.

Because I had bigger problems.

An hour later, Daniel rushed into my office.

"Eleanor.""

I looked up.

His expression told me something was wrong.

"What happened?""

He placed a document on my desk.

"We found the reason Victor wants Ashcroft.""

I looked at the paper.

A purchase agreement.

An old agreement.

My father's signature.

And another name.

Victor Sterling.

"What is this?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Your father didn't destroy Victor.""

I stared at him.

"Then what happened?""

He pointed to the document.

"He offered him a partnership.""

I frowned.

"That makes no sense.""

"It gets worse.""

Daniel placed another document beside it.

"This partnership created something.""

I read the title.

My blood went cold.

Ashcroft-Sterling Foundation.

A company created by both families.

A company I had never heard of.

A company that still existed.

And then I saw the final line.

The ownership structure.

Fifty percent Ashcroft.

Fifty percent Sterling.

But below that was the shocking part.

A controlling clause.

A clause that activated upon the death of both founders.

The remaining heir would inherit everything.

I looked at Daniel.

"My father and Victor had a partnership.""

He nodded.

"And if one side disappeared...""

I finished the sentence.

"The other side would eventually own everything.""

The room went silent.

Because suddenly, I understood Victor’s plan.

He didn't want to destroy Ashcroft Holdings.

He wanted to inherit it.

And Adrian?

Adrian was never the mastermind.

He was never the king.

He was just the first piece moved across the board.

The real game had started twenty years ago.

And now…

It was finally reaching me.
