Chapter 5: The Secret Adrian Never Knew About My Family

Adrian disappeared for three days.

That was when I knew he was planning something.

A man like him did not accept defeat.

He simply changed strategies.

During our marriage, I learned something about Adrian.

He hated losing more than he loved winning.

Winning made him happy.

But losing made him cruel.

When we first met, I thought his ambition was admirable.

He was twenty-eight years old, brilliant, determined, and willing to work harder than anyone around him.

He reminded me of my father.

That was probably why I trusted him.

My father had built Ashcroft Holdings with patience.

Adrian wanted to build an empire overnight.

I should have noticed the difference.

My father believed power came from responsibility.

Adrian believed power came from being admired.

Those two philosophies could never coexist forever.

On the fourth day after the gala, Daniel arrived at my office with unexpected news.

"Adrian met with three investors this morning.""

I looked up from the documents in front of me.

"Which investors?""

He placed a file on my desk.

"People who previously worked with Vale Meridian.""

I opened the file.

Names.

Numbers.

Connections.

Nothing surprising.

"He's trying to rebuild his image.""

Daniel nodded.

"More than that.""

He hesitated.

"What?""

"He is telling people you manipulated the company from behind the scenes.""

I almost smiled.

Of course.

The victim.

That was Adrian's favorite role.

"He says you hid ownership information from him.""

I closed the file.

"Did I?""

Daniel looked at me.

"No.""

"I gave him access.""

And I had.

Adrian had been invited to review financial documents.

He had been offered opportunities to ask questions.

But he never did.

Because he believed he already knew everything.

"People will believe him," Daniel said.

"Some will.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

"But not the ones who matter.""

The city stretched beneath me.

A place where reputation could be built in years and destroyed in seconds.

Then Daniel said something that made me turn.

"There is something else.""

"What?""

"Your father's old partner contacted me.""

I froze.

"My father's partner?""

Daniel nodded.

"He wants to meet.""

That was unexpected.

My father's old partner, Richard Hale, had disappeared from the business world years ago.

Nobody knew where he went.

But if he wanted to meet now, there had to be a reason.

"When?""

"Tonight.""

I agreed.

The meeting took place at a private restaurant my father used to visit.

The same corner table.

The same quiet atmosphere.

Richard looked older than I remembered.

But his eyes were sharp.

"Eleanor.""

I smiled politely.

"Richard.""

He studied me.

"You finally stopped hiding.""

I looked down.

"I suppose I did.""

He nodded.

"Your father would be proud.""

That sentence was harder than I expected.

Because no matter how strong I became, I still missed him.

Richard reached into his briefcase.

"I need to show you something.""

He placed an old envelope on the table.

My name was written across it.

My heart stopped.

"Where did you get that?""

"Your father left it with me.""

I stared at the envelope.

"Why didn't you give it to me?""

"Because he asked me not to.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

Richard was quiet.

"Because he knew Adrian would eventually reveal his true nature.""

My expression changed.

"What?""

Richard sighed.

"Your father never trusted him.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"He knew?""

"He watched Adrian carefully.""

Richard looked at the envelope.

"He told me, 'My daughter has a good heart. She will see the best in people. I need someone to remind her that not everyone deserves that trust.''"

I slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My father's handwriting.

The sight alone almost broke me.

Eleanor,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that forced you to open your eyes.

I stopped breathing.

I continued reading.

You have always been stronger than you believe. But your greatest strength has also been your greatest weakness. You love deeply. You forgive easily.

My eyes blurred.

I knew exactly who he was talking about.

Adrian.

The letter continued.

Never allow someone to mistake your kindness for permission to hurt you.

I folded the letter carefully.

Richard watched me.

"Your father knew.""

"About Adrian?""

He nodded.

"He knew Adrian loved the opportunity you represented more than the woman you were.""

The words hurt because they were true.

I had spent years defending Adrian.

Making excuses.

Believing his flaws were temporary.

Richard leaned forward.

"There is something else.""

"What?""

"Adrian wasn't the only person who underestimated you.""

I looked at him.

"What do you mean?""

He reached into the folder again.

This time, he pulled out a document.

"Your father created something before he died.""

I read the title.

The Ashcroft Legacy Trust.

My eyes narrowed.

"What is this?""

Richard looked serious.

"A protection plan.""

"For what?""

He held my gaze.

"For the day someone tries to take what belongs to you.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because suddenly, Adrian's betrayal felt different.

Bigger.

More dangerous.

May you like

Someone had helped him believe he could take everything from me.

And I needed to know who.
