Chapter 7: The Enemy Who Returned From The Past
I spent the entire night staring at the same three words.
Your father’s enemy.
The phrase kept repeating in my mind like a warning.
My father had always been careful about enemies.
He never used that word lightly.
In business, he believed competition was healthy.
He respected people who challenged him.
He respected ambition.
But there were only a few people in his entire life who earned his true distrust.
And if one of them was still alive…
Then everything Adrian had done suddenly looked different.
The next morning, I called Daniel before sunrise.
"I need every file connected to my father’s old disputes.""
There was a pause.
"Everything?""
"Everything.""
"Some of those records are over twenty years old.""
"Then start digging.""
Daniel understood my tone.
This was no longer about revenge.
This was about survival.
Three hours later, he walked into my office carrying several boxes.
"Your father kept physical copies.""
I looked at the boxes.
"He knew someone might try to erase history.""
Daniel placed the first folder on the desk.
Inside were documents from Ashcroft Holdings’ earliest years.
Acquisitions.
Partnerships.
Legal battles.
And then I saw the name.
Victor Sterling.
I stopped breathing.
I knew that name.
Everyone in the business world knew that name.
Victor Sterling was once considered my father’s greatest rival.
He built Sterling International from a small investment company into a global corporation.
For years, he and my father competed for the same contracts, the same markets, the same influence.
But then, twenty years ago, Sterling International collapsed after a devastating lawsuit.
Victor disappeared.
Most people assumed he had lost everything.
Some believed he left the country.
Others believed he died.
Apparently, everyone was wrong.
"Daniel.""
He looked up.
"Yes?""
"Find out where Victor Sterling is now.""
His expression became serious.
"Do you think he is involved?""
"I don't know.""
I closed the folder.
"But I know Adrian isn't smart enough to create this alone.""
Because that was the truth.
Adrian was ambitious.
He was charming.
He was manipulative.
But he was not patient enough.
Someone else had taught him how to move.
Someone else had given him confidence.
Someone else had convinced him that destroying me was possible.
And I needed to know who.
That afternoon, Daniel returned with an answer.
I knew something was wrong the second he entered.
"Tell me.""
He placed a file on my desk.
"Victor Sterling is alive.""
I opened it.
A recent photograph.
An older man.
Silver hair.
Sharp eyes.
The same cold expression I remembered from childhood.
"He has been living under another name.""
I looked closer.
"Where?""
"New York.""
"And Adrian?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Connected.""
I looked at him.
"How?""
"Victor Sterling has been secretly funding several of Adrian's personal investments for the past year.""
My stomach tightened.
"Vanessa?""
"No.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Something bigger.""
He opened another document.
"Victor has been buying shares of companies connected to Vale Meridian.""
I stood.
"How many?""
"Enough to become a threat.""
The room felt colder.
Because now I understood.
The gala was not just Adrian’s celebration.
It was a distraction.
While everyone was watching him humiliate me, someone else was quietly moving pieces across the board.
Adrian wanted my attention focused on the betrayal.
Victor wanted my attention away from the company.
Together, they had created the perfect trap.
But they had made one mistake.
They underestimated how much I knew.
That evening, I received a message.
Unknown number.
Only one sentence.
*You finally discovered the truth.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*Your father was smarter than you.*
My fingers tightened around the phone.
I replied.
*Who is this?*
The answer came instantly.
*Someone who remembers what your father did.*
My heartbeat remained steady.
Fear was useful.
Panic was not.
I wrote back.
*If you wanted to threaten me, you would have done it already.*
A few seconds passed.
Then:
*You have his confidence. Unfortunately, you also have his weakness.*
I knew exactly what he meant.
My heart.
My willingness to believe people.
My tendency to give second chances.
The things Adrian had used against me.
I put the phone down.
Then I made a decision.
If Victor Sterling wanted a war, he would get one.
But he would learn something my father had taught me.
The most dangerous person in a negotiation was never the loudest person in the room.
It was the person everyone ignored.
May you like
And for years…
That person had been me.
